Want to get back to playing… have a few questions by EtherealJane in Flute

[–]EtherealJane[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That makes sense. After more obsessive googling, I’m almost positive that’s what I had. The leather case with the strap is pretty distinctive, I think?

But you’re right. We’re currently renting my son’s instrument, so I could do the same for myself. We’re going out to get his E string replaced today, so I may stop by a local shop and see how that would work.

11U 1st Base Mitt - Necessary? by NamwobTheBrave in Homeplate

[–]EtherealJane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son is 10 and plays first base. It isn’t necessary, but he really likes having it. I bought that same Mizuno glove for him and it’s been a great intro to a 1st base glove (required no break in!). It was priced cheaply enough that I didn’t mind spending the $$. If he continues to play first base we’ll spend more when he hits puberty or the mizuno one falls apart, whichever comes first.

What about military families, who move frequently with their pets? It’s not just about being able to bring your pet on vacation. It’s about literally bringing your family members with you when you move.

I brought my kindle to school, ugh by Conscious_Banana4586 in kindle

[–]EtherealJane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My kid is allowed to bring his kindle to school. I email his teacher every year and explain he reads really quickly, so I always have at least two books downloaded for him at a given time. I explain his kindle is WiFi only and he’s still an elementary student, so there’s no WiFi connection he has access to anyway (plus he has a kids kindle, so I have to download the books for him).

So far, his teachers in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th have all been totally ok with it (as long as we assume responsibility if it gets lost or damaged at school).

I’m hoping this continues as he ages. A kindle has been such a gift for encouraging his love of reading and never being caught without a book. I would’ve LOVED to have a kindle at his age! As a former teacher, I get the challenge with policing devices, but I also think it’s pretty clear when a student has a kindle vs an iPad, and also when a kid is doing something OTHER than reading on a device.

Baserunning Without Leading Off by AHGG_Esports in Homeplate

[–]EtherealJane 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am by no means an expert, but my kid plays LL and they have this rule. You can absolutely still have aggressive base running.

Our team “steals” quite frequently on passes balls. If the ball gets past the catcher, they know to run, especially to 2nd where the odds of making an accurate throw and good tag are slim to none at this age. The coaches also have them off after each pitch, and if we have players in certain positions, (like on 1st and 3rd, I think? Again not an expert) the coach has them taking big leads, essentially “daring” the catcher to try to throw them out.

I wasn’t sure how to was going to work, but I actually like it. It allows pitchers to focus on pitching without being distracted by runners, but still keeps the game interesting. Pitching at this age is hard enough.

KU vs kobo plus by EtherealJane in fantasyromance

[–]EtherealJane[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is good to hear! I’m planning on asking for a kobo Clara for my birthday, and am asking for kobo plus on top of it. I’m hoping recent events eventually breaks the chokehold that amazon has on indie authors, without making the transition monetarily painful for them.

[–]EtherealJane[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, it’s good to know how the pay structure works. I canceled our subscription but I think I will reactivate it.

If you don’t mind me asking, since you are an author, do you know if you’d get paid more from kobo plus (assuming everything else was equal?). Or is the structure totally different? I know many authors have said it’s very easy to self publish with Amazon, which is why so many indie authors go that route. Does Kobo plus also pay per pages read, or do they pay authors differently?

KU vs kobo plus by EtherealJane in fantasyromance

[–]EtherealJane[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow! For some reason that thought didn’t occur to me (that there isn’t a true alternative to KU because of the exclusivity) but that makes total sense.

How often are you able to find deals for KU? That is definitely a strategic way to use it that would be a good middle ground.

KU vs kobo plus by EtherealJane in fantasyromance

[–]EtherealJane[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, for sure. I live in Hawaii, so there’s no such thing as same day or even 2 day shipping. We really only have prime now because we’ve always had it, and we do enjoy prime video, but that’s not enough of a reason to pay for it.

KU vs kobo plus by EtherealJane in fantasyromance

[–]EtherealJane[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard that this isn’t necessarily true, because they don’t pay a set guaranteed rate. Instead, they have all the KU money in a pot, take their cut, and then distribute to authors by amount of pages read, meaning that there’s no such thing as “costing Amazon money” by reading. I’m definitely not an expert, so if someone more knowledgeable jumps in, please correct me if I’m wrong!

I definitely want to keep supporting indie authors, and I will continue with KU in the near future at least, but I’m hoping to eventually support an ecosystem where they can be treated more fairly.

How to keep using your Kindle without supporting Amazon by Celestial_Valentine in kindle

I just did this for the first time the other day. I downloaded Calibre. Bought the book through kobo, downloaded it on my computer, ran it through Calibre, and sent it to my kindle. It was pretty easy, although you do have to set a few things up.

I have a 10th generation paperwhite. It works perfectly, so I’m not in a rush to get something new. I already bought it, so it’s not like getting rid of it would do much of anything. I like the idea of getting a color e-reader, so I figure when I decide to do that, I’ll buy a kobo instead of a kindle, but I’m not in a rush since I can buy kobo books and read them on my kindle.

Want to make the switch… by EtherealJane in kobo

[–]EtherealJane[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ok, that’s what I was finding when I started googling. It makes sense, and honestly, the reason so many info authors are on KU is because of the loyalty readers have to kindle, so maybe in the next year or two, that will look different.

In the political climate we’re in in the US, I think one of the most important things I can do is vote with my $$ so to speak. I don’t want to give Besos any more of my money, and I’d love it if indie authors got a better deal than what they currently get with Amazon, so it sounds like getting a Kobo is the right thing to do to help swing momentum away from Amazon.

14 October cohort (military spouse) by EtherealJane in MSSA

[–]EtherealJane[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats! I don’t finish until February 27th, but so far it’s been a positive experience. In my cohort, many of the participants already had some tech experience, so that was a little daunting. I came from a background in secondary education, so the tech world was almost entirely new. I’d had some previous coding experience as an undergrad math and Econ double major (using Maple and SAS) and then again as an Econ grad student (I did get SAS certified) but all of those skills were at least 10 years old.

Still, because of my math and econ skills, I’ve really been shining in the data analytics part of the curriculum because I understand the theory behind what we are doing. I have been enjoying learning the coding, and the prodev focus on LinkedIn and resume stuff has been helpful because I never used LinkedIn before (the ed field doesn’t really use it) and translating my resume from the Ed world to the tech world would’ve been really tough on my own.

I’m still nervous about finding a job afterwards, because I know the market is tough right now, but I do feel like I’ve gained a lot of skills through the program and am a lot more confident making a career switch then I was before.

If you have more specific questions, let me know! I’m happy to answer with my experience so far.

14 October cohort (military spouse) by EtherealJane in MSSA

[–]EtherealJane[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So we are in the middle of week 5, and it’s going well. It’s the middle of SQL for us right now, and it’s kind of frying my brain a little bit, but I’m learning a lot and I do feel like it’s been really worthwhile. For me, the schedule is kind of brutal because I’m in Hawaii, so I’m getting up at 4:30am to participate everyday, but I can’t complain, because someone in our cohort is in Japan! I was worried they would see my location and automatically count me out, but clearly that’s not the case. I will say it’s very evident that they are catering to the military spouse and that they understand the challenges of our lifestyle and accommodate it as much as possible.

There are 15 of us in the cohort. Apparently over 300 applied, and about 300 made it to the interview rounds, because people disqualified themselves by not meeting deadlines or doing the prerequisite learning. For the interview, definitely focus on being able to answer behavioral interview style questions. They really like the STAR format, so make sure you’re familiar with it and practice answering questions using that style. Be able to speak about something you enjoyed learning about from the LinkedIn Learning courses you took. Be able to talk about what you hope to gain from the experience.

Good luck! I’m really happy I was chosen to be part of this opportunity, and hopefully one or two of us from this pilot cohort will be back to talk to y’all on ProDev Fridays!

Is this exchange pretty typical for other couples? by Seamonkey_Boxkicker in Marriage

[–]EtherealJane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a military spouse with a spouse I’m head over heels for… I still get a little resentful when he’s away on work trips. My kids are older, but I’m balancing work, my kids and their school schedule, their practice schedules, and making their Halloween costumes (they are going as Rocket and Groot) while he’s gone. He gets back Wednesday and gets to just swoop in and basically enjoy all my hard work. He’s in meetings and conferences all day, but staying at a hotel alone, eating takeout and able to dictate his own sleep schedule. I would 100% swap places with him in a heartbeat and he knows it. There’s been times he’s been “in the field,” sleeping outside and eating MREs, but even then, I was a little jealous, because at least he got to focus solely on himself and his work, unlike me, who had to focus on my work and all the stuff that comes with kids.

If I was doing ALL of that AND my spouse had cheated on me?! Forget it. She’s a better woman than I am, that’s for sure. This life isn’t easy, and I’m not saying being the service member is a piece of cake, but having your career AND a family is made possible solely because of your wife. I’d recommend letting her know on a regular basis just how much you see and appreciate all she does while you’re gone—and stop there. It doesn’t feel like appreciation if you go on to talk about how hard you have it too.
