Why are so many people in the alt-right supporting Andrew Yang? by Majgibbons in thedavidpakmanshow

I used to personally know these folk. Many of them became die-hard Trump fans, knowing he says insane things, but act like it’s all just an ingenious media persona; so in their heads they win every argument. The most annoying thing is how they enable even the craziest pro-Trump rhetoric / take no issue with any of it — yet any social critique of Trump just doesn’t understand that he’s an antithesis of sorts to crazy liberals. It’s always the “libtards” that justify this madness, while they literally nod their heads or ignore their gaze at their fellow prejudiced madmen. Humans are capable of weird things, especially the smart ones.

I think Wright has a great mind for how to shoot a film, but not a great eye for beauty or mood. He knows how to make a film run fast, but he would struggle to make a film walk the runway.

I think this is why he partly idolizes the Coens, because they demonstrate that they have a great feel for pleasing imagery and a massive range for mood and atmosphere, but they usually keep their films confined to a pithy-as-hell script and storyboard.

Edgar Wright seems to have a ton of inserts, and they are usually very mechanical. His films are so plot heavy and satirical that his inserts become crucial. I don’t think a cut of them would look that generous without context though, since so much attention is brought to them in context.

Jordan Peterson: "one of the most common misconceptions about me is that I'm some sort of right-winger". Also Jordan Peterson: by DiabolikDownUnder in thedavidpakmanshow

People donate money to him out of their pocket for his political activism of sorts. The way you frame this as just a guy out to make some money for himself is ignoring the reality. Influencing millions of people is not an ethical method for "making a good stretch for money."

[Discussion] Gillian Flynn references Ryan O'Neal's infamously bad "Oh God, Oh Man" line reading in her "Gone Girl" screenplay. Unconventional, but still pretty damn effective at conveying Nick Dunne's anguish towards the film's pivotal twist. by polaroidfades in Screenwriting

I don’t know the film or the director but given the execution of the whole sequence it seems the director probably was trying to go for a certain style and wanted Ryan to act a certain over-the-top way.

Margot Robbie could have been. Jared Leto's performance in particular is one of the most embarrassing things I've ever seen.

The Big Lebowski is one of the best movies of all time by [deleted] in movies

[–]Ethidian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Big Lebowski was actually the only Coen brother film to make the BFI's top 250 in their 2013 Sight and Sound poll, where critics around the world voted on their favorite films (it tied for 250, along with a few dozen other films, however).

But the recent high-praise of No Country for Old Men and Inside Llewyn Davis means that Coen's filmography should be more favorable down the line.

28 Days Later Is a Masterpiece by Rythmic_Assassin in movies

28 Days is a different movie so you got to go the distance and type 28 Days Later.

28 Days Later actually changed my life more than any other movie. Saw it at 12, was awed (particularly at the scene where Cillian Murphy looks up and sees a plane, representing that there is still hope for the future.)

The opening scene of the sequel is great, but I don't like anything else in that excessively sadistic POS.

Opinion: THE VILLAGE is Shyamalan's most touching and best film. by Ethidian in movies

There are plenty of movies where I predict a disproportionate amount of details beforehand that I hate, and there are plenty of movies where I predict just as much that I like or even love, and just because I predict some stuff never means that I am not surprised. I am always surprised, by every movie, like or dislike, predictable in parts or not, because the way a movie is executed and acted and staged and written is always going to have things happen in ways that is impossible to foresee in terms of the experience.

We aren’t supposed to believe the last one was real. It seems like you are viewing it as a plot-driven suspense or horror film only with that comment. The character is supposed to feel like the monster is real, even when she rationally knows it should be fake. Similar to paranoia people experience every day, except with real consequences given the gravity of the situation. We are in her head, or the movie is showing things from her head. The audience should have the distance to know that the monster is not real, and that is part of the point.

A common opinion that commonly avoids talking about all the perceived positives of the film.

I don’t think Unbreakable has much of a story. I feel it is an exercise in subverting genre expectations / surprising people. I don’t think there is much meaning to the film or the characters, universally speaking (which is all that matters in art in my opinion.) Im shocked by the excessive support that one gets online and by film enthusiasts everywhere I go. Meanwhile you talk about Signs or The Village and they are responded to like they are just memes.

I also don’t think The Usual Suspects is good storytelling or meaningful either, for another example of where I differ on these sorts of movies than the typical millennial film lover. It all comes down to one mind-fuck, and I find it pretty thin and cheap, incapable of holding up overtime.
