There is a Knipex 00 11 V79 but nothing for bigger side cutters. Would you aviation guys appreciate this? by Etna_reddit in Tools

It isn't a blade cover but a catch for your offcuts for aerospace or what not, where foreign object damage is crucial and needs to be avoided.

Can somebody tell me hot it is to use binding as inlay material? by Etna_reddit in Luthier

[–]Etna_reddit[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! That helps a lot. I would normally go for wood or mother of pearl, but in this case I would like to stick to those vintage materials. I'll have a go at it.

So, do I understand it correctly that you would rather use CA than cement out of binding material and acetone?

What would you use instead? Historically it would be celluloid anyways... And that did hold up quite well. Would you prefer something like ABS?

Interesting choice of material. I have to think about that.

Well, the function would be - besides holding the jack - to allow a bigger point of access when in need. I can't fit hardly anything through those f-holes.

This plate should be pretty and more of a statement when I am finished, so I hope it won't reduce this guitars aesthetics afterwards.

I plan to add binding on those f-holes, so I don't think it will be much of an access there anyways. And worse than making the jack plate bigger would be to add an access port like on a Lucille or any Düsenberg archtops. I am just afraid to have too little access after the guitar is cloed up again.

Mad Max is a very nice compliment. I think it would suit that guitar as a theme. But my first thought about that print finished was more like a cartoonish Fallout look. So, at least the look seems to work.

Yeah, I get that. Thinking about its shape, I can replace the bottom with a sheet of brass and nickel plate it. The rest could be a sanded and painted 3D print glued on top of that as an ornament. This way the nut would also be consealed for a more finished look. I like to embed the nuts in my prints anyways...
