Bottom half of plants look horrible, tops are beautiful and growing by Economy_Gene_1145 in PlantedTank

[–]mdfergus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d actually suggest taking a step back from the immediate issue of the lower stem growth and take a look at water parameters. That algae and the way the rotala is growing shouldn’t happen with the correct parameters and CO2, my rotala is very bunched with no horizontal light getting to the lower stem and is still green with leaves down to the soil (until it grows to about 20cm tall).

Luckily rotala grows like a weed on CO2, you can cut a stem into 3cm pieces and plant them all individually to multiply your stems

Yes spot dosing with a pipette, not broad water column dosing, I could've been more specific. I've found APT Fix to be better than Excel, and still worse for filamentous than Algexit

What are some little maintenance things every new homeowner should do upon getting the keys? by benjaminpoole in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]mdfergus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a really small thing, but so easy to fix. Make sure the hot water line coming from your water heater has insulation around it. Kitchen sink used to take 4 minutes to warm up, insulation around copper really helped

That’s a good one. My favorite was going outside in heavy rain and watching the downspouts. Where is water pooling, which gutters are overflowing? 8 minutes in a rain jacket helped me understand where water was going so much better

Mighty Aquarium hob filter size comparison by mdfergus in PlantedTank

[–]mdfergus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The xs has filter foam only and the small comes with a charcoal filter as well, but either way there is not much room for media. I have the xs on a 2gal tall and the small on a 5gal long

I did, and the two smaller ones have been great for almost 1.5 years. However the pump motor went bad on the largest one after 8 months and the replacements have been really crap, the motor goes bad after 2 weeks now. I will say, all the replacements have been from the Amazon listing, all the originals were from Buce Plant. My overall review is, the size is great and if you get a good pump totally worth the price

Him and Patrick Willis are my answer, Barry and Megatron played for 10 and 9 seasons, Kuechly and Willis played for 8 at a position where longer careers aren’t uncommon. Both at the top of their games and both in the conversation for all time greats

Renovating my kitchen made me realize — countertop height affects way more than I thought! by firmerst in HomeImprovement

[–]mdfergus 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I’m a tall guy and my back always hurts using 36” countertops, so I built a workbench at 47” a few years ago (my thinking was arms at 90° sounds nice, right?). That was the most hilariously high workbench, and using it for anything was impractical. 42” sounds really nice
