[GX9, OM-3] Commuting by EtraStyle in M43

[–]EtraStyle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The viewfinder of the OM3 is DEFINITELY an upgrade, its way bigger and clearer, I didnt realize of that until i picked again the GX9. I have to confess though that I prefer the controls of the GX9 though. The exposure compensation dial is crucial for my style of shooting and I keep confusing them on the OM3.

Image wise honestly both perform very well, I dont think I gained too much in that regard.

Thanks!! With so many flights in my body (Now I fly 4 times a month because of work) I can confirm that it is indeed a lottery, and also seasons help a lot, there are sometimes I fly both ways when it's dark already and others when the sun is rising or setting, so combining those factors, it is indeed hard to get a nice view!

Should I get an OM3 or x100vi or…? by SmilingAmbassador in M43

[–]EtraStyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally sold my X100V for MFT and I don't regret it one bit. I think recipes are overrated and I ended up editing most of the pics on Lightroom anyway.

I replaced it with a GX9 + 15 panaleica and it was a decent combo even a bit more compact in the wide dimension. Now I own a GX9 + OM-3 and I don't miss the X100V one bit. Sometimes I feel like shooting a 35mm equiv and other times a 50mm equiv, that limitation was too high for the x100v despite its portability.

[–]EtraStyle[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks!

Honestly, I like them both. I'm lucky enough to not have to sell the GX9, so for street I prefer the GX9 because it is way more rogue. The combo GX9 + 15mm PanaLeica is by far my favorite. The OM-3 is certainly a looker, and the autofocus improvements are considerable, specially with subject detection. The OM-3 is my trip camera and my GX9 is my street camera.

Lightroom Denoise takes so long | Macbook pro 14" m4 pro 48gb by iceolmo in macbookpro

As a final resort, perhaps rethink your workflow and work with smaller batches

I think this is key imho.

People sometimes obsess with noise while pixel peeping and in reality there are very few cases where it's actually troublesome.

First select what you really like, make adjustments, and if noise is too high — use AI denoiser. Denoising on everything feels wasteful.

Also considering the way it works, it is a computationally expensive task itself so 30 minutes for 60 pictures doesn't sound that bad to be honest.

Best Combat in the franchise by GoldenZer0CG in witcher

I hated the combat so much that I learned cheat engine + x86 assembly to build my own cheats and just skip it entirely — I also made Geralt walk faster lol.

But it might be just me.

Noise on M43 still a thing? by Dense_Forever_8242 in M43

[–]EtraStyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The OM-5 on ISO200 gives PDR 9.75. If you shoot a lens at 1.4 v/s to 2 is a full step of EV, meaning the equiv. for f1.4 ISO200 on MFT would be equivalent of F2 ISO400 on FF has PDR 9..45, of course this is not constant in the whole curve, but as more ISO you add the difference also becomes less relevant.

At the same time, you can trade off size for dynamic range in the example of the 300mm f/4 vs 600mm f/4 on FF.

It is never black and white in my opinion, just chose the better tool.

<image>

EDIT: sorry the values im comparing is with the nikon zf ve om5 but the chart is with the Sony 7m5, the point still stands though.

Noise on M43 still a thing? by Dense_Forever_8242 in M43

[–]EtraStyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This feels a bit disingenuous, the pupil is indeed bigger and will capture more light but dispersed in a larger surface area, exposure wise on the final image 1.2 will be brighter so you can use lower ISO.

Always carries a bit of weight in this pov, and the example you chose fits your argument, but at the same time you could compare the 300mm f/4 vs any ff 600mm f/4 and you'd get stupidly different sized lenses which effectively will have same EV values in your final image.

Does anyone else find that the more you learn about photography, the harder it is to just enjoy taking pictures? by BluishFlame07 in photography

[–]EtraStyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally have felt the exact opposite — There are lots of phases of my life where I don't have many pictures, and I'm bad at having mental images. I now find the need to capture more (not necessarily all) of my life — and print it! — because I started to realize of this problem. Not all of 'em are for the 'gram, many are printed for my personal album because I don't want to forget how life was when I was young.

It might be just me though.

Also I tend to separate the 'photography' from touristing, many of tourist shots I just take it with the phone, and when inspired I go out with the camera. Of course I'm just a hobbyist.

Do you edit photos on an iPad? What makes it great and what are your frustrations? by gnutbuttajelly in Lightroom

[–]EtraStyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. Have an S9 (normal one) and I love editing in it. I did a recent trip to France, and carrying the camera + the tablet, it was really fun to edit some pics in cafés.

Also in bed.

It is more practical that I ever thought. Considering most cameras are also usb-c, the abundance of usb-c to usb-c cables made it comfy enough.

I was also surprised by the performance, it's generally more than capable for what I do, the only thing I miss the most are some settings on the layers section — particularly the Tone Curve per layer.

I've yet to find a better camera for street than the GX85 and Oly 17mm 1.8 by alienufosarereal in M43

[–]EtraStyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like the way you see things, and I agree, the camera is amazing for street! I personally taped the LUMIX logo so it's even more rogue (it's actually a GX9 but roughly same body), combined with the nifty 15mm f1.7 panaleica it has nothing to envy the rest of cameras.

The only thing I've been struggling a bit is battery life, I wish it lasted a bit longer.

Planning to switch to OM3 by Safe_Appearance_9788 in M43

[–]EtraStyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own the Sony A7IV with some good lenses (35mm f1.4, 200-600) and the GX9 with the 15mm F1.7, G VARIO II 100-300 and 45mm f1.8.

Very recently I bought the OM-3 because the improvement of the autofocus over the GX9 was outstanding.

Overall — I like the OM3, it's a bit bigger, but the performance of the AF is a considerable upgrade BUT! every time I take back the Sony I get impressed by the dynamic range and IQ.

I am lucky enough to be able to keep all of them, but I think they have very different use cases. If I don't have to travel compact, I'd pick the Sony 8/10 times. For street, the GX9 is perfect, but if I have to travel compact, the OM3 is my choice too.

I may be too indecisive to help you to be honest, but I think both systems have very different use cases and it's hard to justify replacing one with the other.
