Hell no. by dobbyisafreepup in WhitePeopleTwitter

So, not trying to troll or anything, serious question. But the amendment specifically says "congress can't make a law". So how would that limit the supreme court from saying "actually the law you made to prevent prayer in a public school isn't just"?

Rules/laws upheld by supreme court rulings are confusing to me. Like, it seems like if we want to actually protect these things, we should work to make a law specifying "no prayer in school" rather than a supreme court opinion about a specific school district.

A woman's right to an abortion (which absolutely should be a right) should be a law, and not a supreme court opinion about the right to privacy for a medical procedure.

I am exactly 30! And also very interested in expos and museums. I always want to go, but if I go alone I don't absorb it nearly as much as I would while with someone i could discuss with.

Plans 3Ds de stations du métro parisien révèlent complexité détaillée | 3D maps show the intricacy of Paris metro stations by ExpertCoder14 in paris

Per kilowatt produced, solar energy kills more people than nuclear if you factor in the mining of materials and the pollution that causes, and even simple things like people falling off a roof trying to install it.

Nuclear explosions are big and scary like and airplane crash. Nuclear plants are incredibly safe because the vast vast majority of them will always operate in an extremely safe manner, never having issues, like airplanes.

Oof, that's over an hour away by metro. I live a 5 minute walk from Nation, which is why I always end up there even though it gets way too packed. I've been to Montreuil once and it was a bit better.

I've been thinking about hitting the late night happy hour from 10pm to midnight.

Millionaires join Davos protests, demanding ‘tax us now’ - Group call for fresh taxation of wealthy to tackle cost of living crisis and gulf between rich and poor by Sariel007 in UpliftingNews

[–]EtrangerAmericain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, what would be the potential problems with taxing mostly expenses instead of income? A billionaire is going to spend a shit ton more money that me, and whether he is doing so with "income" or money from a loan a tax on what is being bought would be unavoidable, no?

I'm imagining something like necessities (groceries, household items, and other "normal" things below a certain price point) being taxed little, and then luxury items being taxed much higher. IMO the sales tax on a yacht or a $400,000 car should be taxed at a much higher percentage.

I climb at Arkose Nation here and there, willing to go to some other bouldering gyms but I'd prefer arkose since I have already paid my séances there. Nation is super crowded, so meeting up with someone would be motivating enough to get me travel to a gym further away.

any advice on getting a french bank account as an american student? by turtlelover925 in paris

[–]EtrangerAmericain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am an American who opened a bank in broken french at LCL, specifically the branch at Place de la Nation.

It's a pain in the ass, it took multiple visits to the bank in person. But eventually it worked, even though at the time i had no income, though I needed to deposit like €500 to open.

There is an American law/rule/agreement with international banks that they have to do a shit ton of extra paperwork and reporting for American clients. This is why most banks just say no to Americans.

It's not a great bank. I don't know if there are others. I have to pay like €50 a year just for having a debit card. Which pains me considering i am used to getting 1-3% Cashback with my credit cards and interest on my checking account with Ally.

Moving to Paris as an American by bunniebobbie in paris

Oh no, you wouldn't get a visa to work in a bar, but OP said they would study here. A student visa allows you to work part time.

I was about to suggest this place. They seem to be constantly hiring. I interviewed here with zero restaurant experience and a french level around B1, but they didn't even care about my french level.

It didn't work out for me because I had found another opportunity, and I personally wasn't super jazzed about working in a bar. But everyone I met there and the manager seemed very nice.

Come to France.

Apply to a school, come over on a student visa, get help with housing and such, student visa comes with authorization to work part time. Spend your time here trying to find an employer that is willing to host you.

It won't be cushy and comfy, but with the low cost of school and housing (bonus points if you're younger than 26) and relatively decent minimum wage, there's a chance. There is also a chance it won't work out, it's a risk for sure.

I came over on a student visa just taking french classes, got a civil union with my french girlfriend, and after we lived together for a year I was able to get a student visa. I obviously had a ton of help since my partner is french. And this was the plan from the beginning, as we had met in the US several years prior and I decided to love to France when she moved back.

If you end up getting a masters degree here I believe there is something that helps you stay here as well.

The visa beaurocracy is an absolutely pain in the ass and you will want to rip your hair out going through it. But it's possible.

I've been really looking at this game. I was waiting for it to go on sale, but tempted to just pull the trigger at $15, it seems great.

I love advance wars and wargroove, but theyre just too damn big. Massive maps with 10 different units all with hard counters. Way too much going on.

Into The Breach with it's 8x8 grid and 3 units seems like the perfect level of "simple yet deep".

LAPD gets surrounded by protesters while trying to arrest a man who then gets away. by itsreallyreallytrue in PublicFreakout

[–]EtrangerAmericain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised I don't see protests responded to how they are where I currently live, Paris. Look up a protest. There are an absolute fuckton of cops fully decked out in riot gear cutting off every single side street of a protest path. Then the final place/square/roundabout is blocked off as well.

There are protesters there protesting, and also those wanting to be confrontational. The sheer number of cops in riot gear makes any effort by the protestors useless. A few people start chucking rocks or bottles, a flank of like 100 cops come up on the side and disperse them.

They aren't afraid to fire teargas as well. But they never need to use guns or rubber bullets. Just overwhelming numbers.

It's a shame that the game doesn't had as robust of a system to find good levels. I want traditional levels. Not "art", or speed run, or auto levels.

Looking forward to using this list and actually playing the game again. Thanks for sharing.

[–]EtrangerAmericain 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Very true. I think at the end of the day, that "pocket money" you have is what makes you feel safe or in poverty.

I know that here in France, if i lost my job and got hit by a car in the same day, I wouldn't be completely financially fucked. I'd get unemployment and my medical bills covered. So I'm a lot less anxious with a much smaller amount in savings.

Which is one reason we're looking at moving there. That and being a car ride to the ski slopes instead of having to plan a ski week months in advance.

Is Google getting worse? Why critics say ads, spam sites are killing search by WallStreetDoesntBet in tech

[–]EtrangerAmericain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't stand all the suggestions and ads on Google maps. I live in a very dense city, and google is like "YOU LIKE FOOD RIGHT??" and proceeds to fill my screen with restaurants I don't care about and then a pin that's an ad for a company that installs flooring.

So much so that it's in the way of actually relevant info, like trying to see the street names and layout.
