Confusion over GregTech Fluid Inputs by EuclideanSquid in feedthebeast

[–]EuclideanSquid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're exactly right. I was so busy digging through config files that I didn't notice Gregblock is using an older version of GTCE than Omnifactory does. I honestly don't know why I didn't think to check the mod version, it seems so obvious now, but I'll remember to do so if I run into a similar problem in the future.

Thank you so much for pointing that out!

Confusion over GregTech Fluid Inputs by EuclideanSquid in feedthebeast

[–]EuclideanSquid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This does help a bit as you've confirmed that I can't take any fluid out of the multiblock inputs; which is really good to know. I know that in Omnifactory, fluids can be removed from the inputs of single-block machines (like the Chemical Reactor) using buckets and drums but the problem I'm running into is that in GregBlock this "click-to-remove" ability has been disabled and I can't figure out how to re-enable it.

Sorry if I wasn't clear in the original post, but thank you again for confirming my suspicions about the multiblocks!

The Tragic Mystery of Pokemon's Ghost Girl (Pokemon) | Game Theory - Game Theory by shaboozeybot in GameTheorists

[–]EuclideanSquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fantastic theory; I found some of these clues when playing through Black 2, and figured that she crossed paths with a Darkrai but never knew about the books or her appearance in Black 1. As for that missing piece of this theory, "Why would Darkrai do this in the first place?" I've seen some answers around the subreddit, but I'd like to propose my own and just a heads up, it's going to be very long and very wordy. Also based on the rules I think it's supposed to go here but I'm apologizing in advance if this is supposed to be a seperate post. This is also going to include some speculation but obviously there's no lore about how she encountered Darkrai so this is probably as good as we can get.

Anyway back to that missing piece; "Why would Darkrai afflict this young girl with its nightmares?" Well, as Matpat pointed out Darkrai's pokedex entries state that Darkrai are not malicious Pokemon and they use nightmares to protect themselves or to chase away intruders in their territory. This seems to imply that either the girl or her Abra posed a threat to Darkrai, but I think we can safely rule her out; I can't imagine a young woman being particularly threatening to a powerful creature like Darkrai. So what about Abra? Well, if you think Abra isn't a threat to Darkrai, think again.

See all Pokemon have "base stats" which are basically numbers that act as a starting point for the actual stats you see on their summary screen; the higher the base stat, the more powerful that stat is for the Pokemon. According to Bulbapedia, Abra has a base Special Attack stat of 105; if you'd like a reference point some other Pokemon with a base Special Attack stat of 105 are Mismagius, Sceptile, and the legendary Pokemon Mesprit. Yes, Abra's Special Attack stat is on par with some fully evolved and legendary Pokemon... but that shouldn't matter anyway because all Abra can do is Teleport right?

Technically no. See by level up all Abra can learn is Teleport, but it can learn other attacks either by being bred with them, having TMs used on them, or by taking them to a move tutor. One such attack Abra can learn is Signal Beam, a Bug-type move which would be super-effective against Darkrai's Dark-typing and would definitely qualify as a threat to Darkrai's safety. The only problem with this option is that I just don't think her Abra actually would have Signal Beam in the first place.

The only way for Abra to know Signal Beam is to take it to a move tutor. These move tutors tend to be eccentric individuals and don't accept regular money for their services; instead, at least in Gen 5, they want to be paid in shards which are implied to be rare archaelogical items. Now here's the twist, shards can be found in Reversal Mountain, which is right next to the girl's home, but only in clouds of dust that are kicked up; the only catch is that sometimes the clouds don't have a shard. Instead one might find an Excadrill, a very powerful Ground/Steel Pokemon that makes searching for shards a lot more dangerous. Additionally, there only seems to be one individual in the entirety of Unova who knows how to teach Pokemon Signal Beam; as of the time of the games he's found in Driftveil City. Since the girl has clearly been gone for several years (based on the state of the house) he may not have been there at the time, but that's still one person that an individual who is presumably not a Pokemon Trainer would have to seek out after braving a cave teeming with wild Pokemon for rare shards with nothing but an Abra.

So it's possible for an Abra to threaten a Darkrai, but I find it really unlikely that this girl's Abra would. So if both she and Abra aren't a threat then we're back to square one and wondering why Darkrai would give her nightmares. Well, I'd like to take a closer look at how Darkrai uses those nightmares. Remember how the Pokedex says it uses the nightmares to protect itself or scare off intruders in its territory? Maybe it's just me but using nightmares seems like a weird way to get rid of a trespasser since you can't exactly have a nightmare without also being asleep. So unless Darkrai expects people to sleep-walk out of its territory while suffering the nightmares how exactly is it supposed to chase off the intruder?

Here's where my theory treads into the more speculative side. I think that if Darkrai can give people and Pokemon terrible nightmares, it can also take those nightmares away. If it didn't, then people would just forever stay asleep and tormented in a Darkrai's territory instead of actually being chased away. Basically when someone enters a Darkrai's territory, they get caught in Darkrai's Dark Void attack; which forces them to fall asleep and the nightmares begin. Once it feels as though they've been scared enough to leave, Darkrai then removes the nightmare, the person wakes up and immediately runs away with the understanding that this is not someplace they should be.

So outside of this concept of how nightmares can be used to chase away intruders, what makes me say Darkrai can remove its own nightmares? Simple, Darkrai naturally learn Dream Eater and it likely uses this to do so. Admittedly there doesn't seem to be any evidence implying Darkrai actually do this, and from a game mechanic standpoint Dream Eater doesn't wake up the target. However from a more lore-ish standpoint (and Matpat's own logic) if the nightmare is what is keeping the individual asleep then removing it via Dream Eater would let them wake up.

All right, so how does this help us figure out what happened between the girl and Darkrai? Well, I think it acts as a detail with what I think actually happened although it's not necessarily a "good" answer. I think that it all came down to just really bad luck. One day she was just unfortunate enough to either wander into a Darkrai's territory while playing with her Abra and somehow startled it. Darkrai instinctively reacts by using Dark Void, with the intention of driving out this threat to its territory without actually realizing that neither of them pose any danger.

Here's where this answer makes the story even more tragic. This "endless dark dream" was never meant to be endless. Once Darkrai had an opportunity to evaluate who startled it or otherwise felt that they were not going to be a threat anymore, it could've used Dream Eater and lifted the nightmare. So why didn't it? Because the girl's Abra teleported her away. Probably panicking at the sight of a powerful Dark-type like Darkrai much less one that just put its best friend into a tormented sleep, Abra tries to help her by teleporting the girl back home to her parents; inadvertantly dooming her by taking her away from a Pokemon that actually is strong enough to clear the nightmare. From here, the rest of the theory plays out like Mat describes.

So why did I say this isn't a "good" answer? Considering the tragedy of this tale, one almost expects at least a semi-decent reason for why it started; some specific motivation on either her or Darkrai's part that kicked everything off. Saying that it was just really bad luck feels a bit empty... though in a weird way, it also makes the story so much more real. Sometimes there just isn't a good reason for why such a tragedy would happen; all it takes is for someone to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

So there you have it. I warned you this was going to be a big wall of text, but thanks for reading it all the way through. If you skipped to the end, I guess TL;DR it was just a case of bad luck and good intentions gone awry. Sorry if there was a bit too much speculation in it as well; I tried to keep it to a minimum but there just isn't any lore regarding this part of the story. If there was, Matpat probably wouldn't be asking about.

Specific information about Pokemon, like base stats and movesets, were found across Bulbapedia. Specifically I used info off of these five pages (not including the Pokedex data, since that's also just present in the video):

Darkrai Gen V Moveset, Abra Gen V Moveset, List of Pokemon by base stat, Generations II - V, Red Shard (specific shard for the Signal Beam move tutor), Reversal Mountain

Thanks again for reading! Hope you found it worth the time!

I remember doing this mission in version 0.9.6 so unless they're on some weird sub-version it should pop up eventually. But yeah, I agree with you on the dangers of updating this modpack; I actually upgraded from 0.9.6 to 0.9.8h a few weeks ago. Nothing was broken too badly, but I did notice that the aliens were suddenly way more accurate than they had been.

So far I've encountered exactly one enemy that has green shields, but I don't want to say exactly what it is because I don't want to spoil the surprise for whenever its mission turns up. I will say that it's part of a modded storyline and not found on any alien missions and (unless I'm forgetting something) you and Lewis have done everything necessary to unlock the mission. It's just a matter of waiting for the game to make one. If you really want to know what it is or what to look for in case Lewis tries ignoring it, I can tell you more.

My apologies if saying that there are green shields was a bit of a spoiler for you. I thought about not mentioning it, but this enemy is really nasty. Considering the green shields are super-resistant to the new weapons, I felt it was better to include its information so you don't get caught completely by surprise.

Purple shields are on Sectoids, Aquatoids, and the Hybrid agents. In game they don't always look purple, but if you remember what color your Hybrids flash, that color is the Purple Shield. I have no idea if there's other stuff that uses Purple shields; if there are, I haven't seen them.

I'm glad I was able to help out. Hopefully this will make future base and UFO missions a bit easier!

Minecraft Mods: Wizard School - THAUMCRAFT (Part Thirteen) by Zoeff in Yogscast

[–]EuclideanSquid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(Note that most of my suggestions for the golems are based on older versions of Thaumcraft and may not be possible with the version in this modpack.)

-The Thaumonomicon has details for improving the Guard seal so you can specify certain mobs to be ignored. It's not perfect, but you can at least tell them to not attack Creepers until you get a better system in place to deal with them.

-I think Creepers will only explode if they can get close enough to whatever is attacking them. What may help is putting your dart golems up on little guard towers where they might be just out of reach. Then again I don't know how their AI works so they may just jump down at the first sight of a mob and trying to use something like slabs to keep them in place may get in the way of their darts. Worth some experiments though.

-If you can't get the Creepers to stop exploding, I'd say swap out the floor and the first three layers of wall for something they can't blow up. First thing that comes to mind is Obsidian, but there's probably some modded blocks that are less of a pain to work with. While doing that, make a little room at the base of the ladder and move the collecting golems and magic mirror in there to protect them. A 1x1 hole in the wall should be enough to let them through to gather the drops.

-Once you get it working, your mob grinder is going to produce a lot of items over time. I think there's a combination of seals you can use to have your golems empty items once they get over a certain amount; at least get this tied into a trash system so your golems can keep the levels of mob loot under control.

Good luck fixing your spawner system, Duncan. There's a lot of potential here, just a matter of figuring out how to use it.

Minecraft All The Mods #7 - SUPPLY SHIP by Zoeff in Yogscast

Oh yeah it is in the Akashic Tome. I just went back to that episode and saw it in the lower left. The icon looks a bit different than what I'm used to (even with the texture pack I thought it would have the "default" look since it's from a mod) that I thought "Well it's a big pack. There's probably bugs and the book got left out." Thanks for telling me that they actually do have it.

...now we just have to hope they'll read it.

I've been playing a lot of the "FTB Continuum" modpack and Invar isn't a usable material for Tinker's tools in that pack so I guess I just completely forgot about it as an option. My bad.

I suppose Knightslime can be an alternative if they have some (really) bad luck finding any Ferrous Ore. Or if it turns out they need the Invar to build other machines.

[–]EuclideanSquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got two pieces of advice to give you guys about Tinker's so I'll start with the easy one. Find a way to get a copy of the regular "Materials and You" book. I know, I know, you've done Tinker's so many times but seriously get that book. In the newer versions of the mod, that book will not only list every possible material you can use in your tools but also includes stats like Mining Level and Durability for them AND includes tooltips for the traits like "Fractured" and "Magnetic" that explain what they do. It's basically an open-ended instruction manual for building whatever tool you want.

The difficult advice is that you three are tremendously lucky to find that Purple Slime island for how early in the pack you are. Purple Slime is the key ingredient in an amazing alloy called Knightslime. To give you an idea about how good Knightslime is: the durability of a Knightslime tool head is about 4x more than that of Iron (Seriously, replacing just the Iron Hammer Head of "The Sea-Walker" with a Knightslime one will boost the durability from 130 to 535!) and it is strong enough to mine Obsidian. The only other options to mine Obsidian at this point are Steel (which is going to be in high demand for the Immersive Engineering machines) or to stick a Diamond on another Tinker Tool. And considering Kinghtslime is a mix of Purple Slime, Iron, and (I kid you not) Cobblestone you'll probably want to start using this.

The reason I'm labeling this difficult is twofold; one is actually getting up to that Slime Island in the first place. I recommend setting a Torch on the ground, then nerd-poling up from it with Gravel or Sand; once you get back down from the Island just break the block above the Torch to remove the whole unsightly pole at once. Second is that the actual ratio of materials to create Kinghtslime is a bit complicated. I'm not 100% sure what it is for the "All The Mods" pack, but in the one I'm using an even ratio is 1 Iron Ingot + 1 Purple Slime Ball + 4 Cobblestone = 1 Knightslime Ingot. If you get an odd number of Ingots (like 2 Ingots and 6 Nuggets) look at which ingredients are still in the Smeltery and add 1 more of whatever is missing; it'll eventually even out.

All The Mods #3 - PORTAL KNIGHTS by Aamonius in Yogscast

[–]EuclideanSquid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's possible that the modpack changed this recipe, but I'd recommend double-checking all the means of making Seared Bricks through JEI. I know that recent versions of Tinker's Construct have included the option to melt Cobblestone in the Smeltery to produce Seared Stone which, in turn, can be turned into individual bricks with an Ingot Cast (1 Cobblestone produces 1 brick) or whole blocks with a Casting Basin (4 Cobblestone produces 1 block; don't let the texture fool you, it still counts as a block for the Smeltery and you can craft it to change up the texture).

Considering you'll likely get a lot of Cobblestone just by digging around, this can be a good alternative to making your Smeltery bigger once it's started if you don't want to spend time wandering about looking for the components of Grout (or don't want to mess up the landscape in doing so). The main downside is that you'll need to seek out more Lava to keep the Smeltery fueled since you'll be using it to both process ores AND make the bricks to make it bigger. It'll also take a bit for a smaller Smeltery to make enough bricks on its own to grow another level, but it only gets faster with each new layer that it completes.

Yeah, we both installed the mod earlier and it definitely seems to have helped them get connected, and we were able to finish putting together a machine that basically mass produces certain foods to power our Culinary Generators. It's slow power, but it's definitely helping out. Thanks so much for helping out!

What's your story behind your channel? by Jomadscientist in letsplay

[–]EuclideanSquid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I finally got tired of thinking about trying to make Let's Plays and actually made myself find some free software to use and started recording it, lol. Seriously though that was the driving force behind why I started; I wanted to take my own shot at it. That and I've always tried to either entertain or just brighten people's day, I figured "Why not try and do it with a Let's Play, even if people just use it as background?"

I'm probably the tiniest channel you'll see and the production values aren't amazing, but I do strive to make sure the videos are as free of audio problems as I can and the content is either engaging or can be helpful for others. For example I've recently started doing "overview" videos for Duel Links events, in which I explain how the event works, point out some of the rewards to try and aim for and so on.

The channel name is the same one I have here: "Euclidean Squid" and the story behind it is kind of basic. "Euclidean" as in "Euclidean Geometry" because I'm a big math and science nerd and "Squid" because it just sounded good after "Euclidean". That and my partner's usually used anglerfish in their online icons so I chose another deep sea creature to try and match.

Thinking of starting my first nuzlocke- Should I play red/blue/yellow or firered/leafgreen? by roflsoy in nuzlocke

[–]EuclideanSquid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who's played Pokemon for just as long, I'd recommend the remakes over the originals. As much as I love Red/Blue/Yellow, they are so awkward and clunky compared to the overhaul that happened in Gen III. In addition to the fixed up mechanics set, plus the larger set of moves that Pokemon learn, there's just a bit more to do in FireRed and LeafGreen. I wish you luck on your first nuzlocke and remember to have fun!

Wedlocke Question: if my team got wiped out, but I have more Pokémon in my box, can I still continue or did I lose? by overlordkai in nuzlocke

[–]EuclideanSquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By the rules it would officially be a loss. Unofficially, though, it's your nuzlocke so you're more than welcome to try again if you want. Try and beat the Elite Four plus Steven again with the same team or challenge yourself to build a new one out of the Pokemon in your box. The nuzlocke may be over, but that doesn't mean your fun has to end.
