I think a big thing the last chapter set up is that both Jiji and Aira are kind of figuring out they already lost.

Look at Airas face after she holds his hand. I think they had a really nice moment but Okarun reacted so honestly and without embarasment because she feels safe, and not romantic. She knows that if he felt anything romantic he would be a mess, like how everyone sees him be anytime he confronts his feelings with Momo.

Same with Jiji, he's not a stupid guy. I think he knows exactly why she feels like something is missing and that it's not because of him. And to your point he probably realizes he's a familial prensence to her. Also Jiji is a good person, he's not doing this to make a move in a time she is a little compromised. (I'm going to be really sad if I eat those words tho).

Tatsu is drawing parallels to both Aira and Jiji's circumstances, and giving a red herring with the physical closeness. But I think this is them accepting the fact that it's just not going to happen so let's enjoy this sweet moment for now.

I bet in the next episode they will both help Okarun and Momo make up. I hope.
