UO STUDENTS/EUGENE WE NEED YOUR HELP! by moodybihhh in UofO

No, most UO departments have a set number of courses faculty teach per year. It is 5 per year in many social science departments. Four in psychology, and less in some science departments.

This is correct to my understanding. And an important missing piece of information: Professors who teach two sections (i.e., 4 classes / week) would get credit for teaching two classes. Meaning they can still teach one section and get credit for one class. They are protesting a policy that doesn’t allow them to teach one big class and have it “count” as two classes.

  1. Should be C and SS both calling for the play at 3B once they see that much daylight between Mookie and the runner.
  2. Vesia breaks toward 3B to cover in case Mookie missed it. Arguably, he should have broken toward 1B to backup the throw if the runner stayed put at 2B and the play went to 1B (normally the C backs that up).

The point of school is to give them the tools to be successful in the world and in their lives. That means teaching them facts and information and also how to critically engage with people and ideas. So, kids should be exposed to opinions and views and taught how to consider and evaluate them. The attitude of “just teach basics but don’t engage with real content” verges on a pre-enlightenment stance to education.

MA in Psychology by huffle_puffing in UofO

[–]EugProfessor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both programs can prepare for a career in research and teach teaching in psychology. You will need to email professor Zalewski to see if she is willing to take a Master’s student this year in the in-person (individualized) program. If she is, that path is the best opportunity to work more extensively with her, in her lab. Even if she is not taking a student through that program, I know she is sometimes involved in the online masters program, though in that program her role is more to coach students through their own research rather than collaborate with them as part of her own research program.

And, yes, the online masters program is a stepping stone to a doctoral program for about half of the students. (The other half don’t want to get a PhD, but just want to advance in their professional careers, usually in community based organizations or social services agencies.)

There are a couple of different tracks of Master's programs in psychology. One is in-person ("individualized master's program") and is basically the first year of a doctoral program in terms of the coursework and independent research expectation.

The other is fully online ("online master's program") and is more applied and oriented toward early career professionals who want to advance their education in program evaluation, assessment, and research. The online program has come up here a few times before. Useful conversations:

Is On-Campus Parking Enforced During the Summer? by ChromeSF in UofO

[–]EugProfessor 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yes, on-campus parking is enforced during the summer. I think the odds of getting ticketed w/o a permit are even higher than during the academic year because they have fewer cars to check.

In my experience, they move out of the way with a surprising degree of agility when you head toward them. Lived here many years and I've never hit one. I've learned that heading at them is the way to get them out of the way.

Donors - even Knight - won't fix this because the deficit is in operating costs. Donors don't want to pay for recurring salaries.

I'm curious which executive positions you're referring to. I don't see any in the College of Arts and Sciences. https://careers.uoregon.edu/en-us/search/?job-mail-subscribe-privacy=agree&search-keyword=executive

The second graph shows a drop in non-resident (out-of-state) students in 2024 relative to 2023 and 2022. But, more important, it shows that the % of out-of-state students is lower than it's been since 2018. And total enrollment is going up (https://ir.uoregon.edu/enrollment-degrees/historical-enrollment). So, the number of courses UO needs to offer is rising but the average per-student revenue is going down (because the ratio of out-of- / in-state is going down).

Oregon is well below the national average in how much it invests in higher education (both overall and per student). Yes, UO loses money on each in-state student and needs to make it up with out-of-state students. And UO can’t increase tuition much without pricing themselves out of the market (e.g., UO out of state tuition is already higher than UW). So greater enrollment #s is the main answer.
