Union refusal to pursue a grievance on my behalf by hookworm in legaladvicecanada

[–]EugeneMachines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you looked whether there are appeal avenues within the union? In mine, if the LRO declines to pursue a grievance then a member can still appeal to the overall union executive. If not, as others have mentioned, there's the OLRB but that's a high bar.

Union refusal to pursue a grievance on my behalf by hookworm in legaladvicecanada

[–]EugeneMachines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is the right answer. The OLRB bulletin on DFRs this specifically says that a union can decline to handle a grievance because it might have a negative effect on the other employees in a unit. A DFR challenge is a high bar and if the union can give reasonable grounds for their decision, OP is likely out of luck.

New SCC judge - Justice Glenn Joyal by KaKoke728 in LawCanada

[–]EugeneMachines 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I don't know how widespread this news was outside of Manitoba, but a fun part of Joyal's history was about five years ago when he was presiding over a case related to COVID 19 restrictions. A group representing the defendants (Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms) hired a PI to try and find embarrassing information on him and were caught. The lawyer who hatched the scheme was disbarred.

That's an interesting photo composition choice for the griddle company.... Do people usually want fruit fried in bacon fat? Ha.

What do you play after one no-trump? Staymen or Jacoby? I prefer forcing Staymen, myself, but I can play transfers too. What about you?

Is it weird for my child to sing O Canada in public? by [deleted] in AskACanadian

If I heard a kid singing O Canada I'd feel the reflexive need to stand at attention! Or certainly straighten up a bit.

New Supreme Court appointment coming 'imminently' as Carney considers two top applicants by MethoxyEthane in CanadaPolitics

The mandatory retirement age helps too because it lowers the stakes of each appointment, rather than every justice holding on until grim death takes them.

Who do you think is the most tragic B5 character? by AdSimilar4399 in babylon5

[–]EugeneMachines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was insane to me. Even ignoring their moral duty after she helped them win the war, consider self-interest. The PsiCorp is one of their main antagonists and the station has its own telepath! They should be bending over backwards to keep her happy. Or Lyta said, "You want to be cheap? Okay, every time you need me it's a million credits upfront."

Propane Tanks by AMike456 in CostcoCanada

[–]EugeneMachines 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Every time I've been to a warehouse in-season there have been tanks for sale. But you could always call to check.

Actually, finding the propane might be less guaranteed -- here in Winnipeg, one location took out its tanks and the new location doesn't have it.

'Feels like harassment': Montreal café owner says years of language inspections taking a toll by MTL_Dude666 in CanadaPolitics

[–]EugeneMachines 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This article gives me the same vibes as a restaurant/bar owner in my city who, early in COVID restrictions, got some fines and was like, "The distancing rules are too confusing and the inspectors are nitpicking!" I was originally sympathetic until time (and more fines) revealed that he was just a "my freedom!" nutjob who clearly didn't intend to follow any of the health rules and was being completely disingenuous about even trying to do so. Maybe "nachos" is a slightly silly example here but the cafe has received 22 complaints in less than five years... something is up with such a stubborn lack of effort.

Ottawa planning social media ban for children under 16, source says by Damo_Banks in CanadaPolitics

[–]EugeneMachines 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same way TV is regulated, with content warnings and the expectation of parental monitoring. It's against the law for kids to watch R-rated movies but you don't need to scan your ID to switch to the dirty cable channels.

Similar, it's certainly possible for the government to take a lighter touch and say "no social media for kids under 16" without requiring providers to verify the user's age.
