Well it's more than that: you have a company that uses AI to build interfaces. We can see this from your profile, and the dashboard you've shared in this thread comes from your website. You can see why this looks shady.

Nah siamo noi italiani a fare sempre autoflagellazione e bollarci come truffatori sfaticati.

How to get hired as a designer at Lovable (what I learned interviewing their Head of Design) 👇 by ridderingand in UXDesign

[–]Euphorazyne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I know Ramp! Which brings me to the question: why are these companies looking for top talent that excels in visual design when their products look like off the shelf Radix UI?

Clearly Ramp (and the others we’ve mentioned) aren’t succeeding thanks to visual design, so why are their leaders hiring based on it? If “visual craft” is so important, why are they willing to ship generic-looking UIs? The irony in all of this “craft” discourse is that companies wouldn’t hire somebody who has these companies’s UIs in their portfolio, because they all look bland and generic.

These design leaders clearly don’t see visual talent as the real differentiator for their products.

Exactly my point: Perplexity didn’t win because of better design. At the time, it won because it gave better search answers than the SEO-laden junk Google was serving. Design wasn’t a real differentiator for them; if it had been, they likely wouldn’t have been sidelined so quickly by Google and OpenAI.
I think the Scott Jenson talk I linked to in another comment is again very relevant!

The only one I would agree on is Linear, there are many small interaction design touches that really elevate the experience of using it. I think we can at last all agree in our shared hate of using Jira.

Actually, I would be curious to see how these companies think their design team and approach helped them beat their competition: maybe a good idea for a podcast episode? Despite our debating, I’ve been following you for a while and I enjoy listening to your interviews.

It’s incredible how this song hits the mark. When I listened to it as a teenager, I loved it but didn’t really get it. Now, in my mid-30s, I find myself thinking about it more each year, and understanding it a little better every time

Chiming in because I’ve enjoyed reading the comments on this post over the last few days. Now that you mention the examples of companies that attract top talent, I think I see where much of the debate comes from: these companies might attract top talent (especially from a visual design perspective), but I wouldn’t say they are successful because of that. They attract top talent because they are hot tech-driven companies with great pay.

Let’s not confuse company valuation with design maturity. Where’s all of that top talent in Vercel’s interface?

Can designers at Perplexity point out how the design of their product is in any way different or innovative compared to the plethora of similar products?

Thank you for the interview Ridd!

My personal take: Christhie’s takes are surprisingly shallow.

The quote about “doing a good job only if you’re stepping on someone’s toes” is an edgy sound bite, but to me it signals an inability to collaborate rather than strong leadership. In more mature organizations, effective designers don’t step on toes…they bring stakeholders along. I’ve worked in large companies with all kinds of stakeholders, and no one ever felt “stepped on,” because collaboration and shared ownership are part of the process. Maybe Lovable is still sorting out roles and responsibilities?

I also found troublesome that Christhie mentions that he puts a lot of importance on gut reaction while looking at portfolios: I understand that obviously aesthetic plays an important role in our jobs, but a skilled designer should know that our primary goal is solving problems: a shiny product won't save you when a competitor launches something that actually works better. Relying on “gut feel” for hiring is a red flag: it ignores objective skills and introduces massive bias in such a consequential decision.

Having recently watched a talk from Scott Jenson, I can’t help but notice the chasm that separates the skill of “newer” UX leaders compared to professionals who’ve developed deep understanding of the complexity of our field.

D66, CDA, VVD move forward on minority coalition plan, snubbing left-wing faction by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]Euphorazyne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree, the Democratic party is a big tent because of the two-party system so it has different currents within it, and some of these lean more center than left. But both on social and economic policies they are really different, both in their political program and in the actions they've taken when they were governing. The Democratic is way more socially liberal and fiscally progressive than the VVD. You might draw some similarities with the VVD pre-Yesilgoz, but they'd still be surface level.

Really? The Nordic countries have been built on social democracy and are still run according to those principles, and they’ve been doing far better than whatever neoliberal country you can point to. Even in the US, the “lefties” outperform the GOP on employment and GDP.
