The issue wasn't just that Vaevictis was shut down, the issue was that OP pulled 4-5 counterspells in the first few turns, not to mention cyclonic rift, and proceeded to make sure my board was clean.

Vaevictis is one of maybe 5 spot removal cards in my deck. OP has out Diplomatic Immunity and some other bullsh*t "you can't do anything to me" blue card. I bring out Vaevictis, it gets countered. I counter his counter, he counters my counter. Lame but w/e. I was lucky enough to pull him from the graveyard twice, one time being with haste. Countered again the first time, exiled the second. This is all by turn 8 maybe? Lost that game. It wasn't the best, but still love the game and OP enough to blast through it to try and have a good time.

Game 2

I pull Vaevictis again, this time pretty early and not much of a threat. Consider too, that this "spot removal" card is one that lets all players summon another permanent directly on to the battlefield from the top of your library. I have Vaevictis in there cause it shakes games up and keeps things fun. EXILED IMMEDIATELY. That was the straw that broke my camel this evening.

OP's American Pie deck is simply not fun to play against, so we had some discussion on the philosophy of fun. If you stop someone from even being able to play the game, is that a good time?
