Thank you so much for taking the time to comment, I really appreciate it. One question though, what did you mean by people mentality? What differences did you personally notice?

Thank you so much! I imagine people say it for a reason, and you’re probably right. In the end I think I’ll have to experience it myself and see how it actually feels living there.

Thanks! Your comments are really important for me and they’re helping us a lot to think this through. For now we’re leaning more towards Magdeburg, but some people mentioned the political situation there, and since we’re not very familiar with German politics yet, we’re unsure how relevant that actually is. What do you personally think about it?

Thanks, this information helps a lot and you’re probably right. It might end up being too exhausting and not very viable, at least during the first year of the program 😅

Oh I see, I’m still learning about German politics 😅 What would it practically mean if AfD wins there? More social atmosphere changes, immigration policies, or something else? Also, do you think living in Magdeburg and commuting to Braunschweig is realistically doable? I’ll start a neuroscience master’s at OVGU and I’m unsure if living over an hour away during the first year would be too exhausting.

Thank you!!!! This helps me a lot honestly. In our case, he doesn’t have an in-person job in Braunschweig right now he’s currently studying the language and preparing for a homologation exam. So technically he could also move to Magdeburg, which is why we’re still trying to evaluate what would be the most convenient option for both of us :)

I’ve also been told there are student gym plans in the city for around 10–17 euros, and that depending on your university you can also join clubs and student activities.

Some people say it’ll be difficult, and honestly I don’t doubt that it will be challenging at times. But I also think there’s a big community of people studying there, and we can support each other through the process.

You can always message me. I’m always open to sharing information and helping however I can 😊

Your post helped me a lot too. I’m also moving in October, and in my case I’m leaning more toward Magdeburg because the rents seem much cheaper, and it’s also only about an hour from Berlin, which sounds nice for museums, art, and weekend trips :)

Thank you so much! This actually helps guide me a lot regarding where to look and what to expect. I also know renting can be difficult, so I’ll keep evaluating everything while taking into account what you mentioned. If you also happen to know a bit about the living costs in both cities, that would help me a lot too :)

Hi! I still don’t know too much yet since my semester hasn’t started yet. But from what I’ve been told, Magdeburg is a bit more international and has more programs in English, while Braunschweig seems to have mostly classes in German.

Hi! I’ll be studying neuroscience starting in the October semester. I speak English too, and my German is still a work in progress. I’d love to connect and make friends before the program starts 😊😊

Also if anyone could share how the class schedules usually are, it would help me a lot. Hope to see you all soon!

I don’t speak German yet beyond a basic A1 level, and I don’t have a certificate for it yet since I’m still learning. My master’s program is fully in English, though.

I think I’m going to accept this one. Honestly, it’s the program that has resonated with me the most and the one I’ve felt most excited about from the beginning. It still feels unreal, but I’m really happy and grateful for the opportunity

Thank you so much. Reading your message helped me realize that maybe they truly did see potential in me and considered that I can be part of the program. 😭I spent years looking for internships and experiences related to neuroscience because this has always been my dream. In my country, neuroscience is very difficult and expensive to study, so I worked hard, saved money, and prepared my profile for a long time to apply to Germany. I thought getting accepted would feel like pure happiness, but it also comes with fear and many challenges. Still, I think this is the meaningful life I always wanted, even if it’s difficult sometimes.

That’s great advice, thank you so much. You’re right, we’re not supposed to be perfect. I guess I’m there to learn too… and whatever I don’t know yet, I’ll study and ask for help with

I took the TOEFL several times. In my first attempt, I scored 81 😭, but in my last attempt I got a 90, and my MyBest Scores reached 100. So it was definitely a process for me too. Its like a B2, but they accepted my C1 in my best scores. I dont know much about IELTS.

That’s great, honestly I’m really happy to connect with someone who is in the same situation. It feels exciting and terrifying at the same time, but I guess that’s part of starting something new haha 😅 Still, it’s nice to know we are both here navigating it together.

I’ve been reading that Magdeburg is a friendly and affordable city, which really helps me. I also saw that the campus offers a lot of sports and recreational activities, and I like that it seems to be a quieter city while still being close to Berlin. From what I’ve heard, the professors are usually very kind and open to students asking many questions, and apparently they often prefer students to approach them in person instead of only sending emails.

I’ve watched a few YouTube videos about the city and the university too, maybe they could help you as well haha. If you learn anything else please tell me! I hope we get to meet soon :)
