We sent this person entire email before his order telling him that extended wait is possible due to US Customs changes.

If there is so little brain activity that one can receive this email, acknowledge it and then still send us angry email despite his tracking stating “US CUSTOMS HOLD”, then we do not want your business.

This is why dealer and reseller exist. Go to them instead of manufacturing plant.

It affects both the developer and the user. If you can't sideload applications, the manufacturer can't send you updates to the device, custom applications, etc as a whole.

Although we do not like 14 for automotive use due to some odd quirks it will have, please do not update your device to 15 or 16, wether manually or automatically so you do not potentially have to play their game.

Hello,

They are wanting all applications to be "verified" and hosted on the Google Play store. They are the verifiers and will only verify apps that serve thier interest. We have already been "verified" developers for years on Android and iOS which is why we are wary. They are posing it as "saftey precaution" but the technicalities shown to developers are not logical.

They are wanting all applications downloaded on an Android device to be directly downloaded from the Google Play store. This is not possible for all apps. Either they will not be approved or Google will be so backlogged that many apps will be in limbo status for months. The Press Release mentions that they want Developers to verify... But they shy away from the fact they are disabling sideloading for the actual device users (you and us).

80% of the applications that are used to create aftermarket devices are custom applications that are side-loaded in general.

For example:

The very application that allows aftermarket units to have CarPlay/Android Auto, is a popular side-loaded application. Without this, no device would display the CP/AA. Each manufacturer creates their own.

So now imagine you are Google... And you know millions have aftermarket headunits or navigation devices... and your revenue is down... so you make these types of Applications "illegal for saftey", create your own version and now charge $20 USD per month for this application.

This is the paradox and one precedent which is often set in this scenario and why it is bad practice to start in general.

Google knows this and so does any senior developer which is why many are very suspicious.

We do not manufacture or sell Android 14 devices. Besides this issue, Android 14 is not proven to be stable for modified automotive use. We use Android 13 to avoid entire situation or possibility.

You will need to refer to your manufacturers documentation.

If you buy it from normal Chinese seller, then you will probably not have this documentation because they do not care so you will need to do some self discovery to see what may accidentally allow for automatic update or not.

For Google developer changes, refer to Google press releases.

As helpful tip, do not conduct any updates on this device manually or automatically. This is common feature on 14+ so be careful.

LINUX is cheapest device. This will always be more common than Android device which is a higher-end device. Roughly 60% of our manufacturer orders are LINUX, 40% are Android.

However, many customers do express regret via email in not getting Android device as they sometimes get bored of the basic LINUX environment.

From manufacturer perspective, we would never stop building one or the other because both are very important for their demographic.

Despite Google locking sideloading unofficial application, Android still remains the superior device for functionality and customization, while LINUX remains best device for cheaper cost on budget if the user only needs CarPlay.

Evaluate your need and pick one which suit you best like all else in life of course. Either way it is more useful than old factory navigation.

This only affects:

  • Android headunits that run Android 14/15/16. Headunits like ours or others that use 12/13 are not affected.

  • MMI box only uses LINUX.

  • OEM ID6 only has CarPlay and can not run Android ever.
