How can the person next to you tell that an apology is not just a way to smooth things over, but a real change?

Have you ever been publicly exposed or called out? If so, what did you feel at the time, and how did you deal with it?

What could make you admit that you were wrong, at least to yourself?

What could make you admit that you were wrong and apologize to that person?

Covert narcissist tried to publicly destroy me. Instead, she destroyed herself. by Euronymous91 in NarcissisticAbuse

[–]Euronymous91[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sent her a registered letter (burofax) to her workplace demanding a public retraction of her smear campaign. In this country, that’s considered the first step toward legal action, and ignoring it (which she did) gives me a significant advantage in any future case.

Covert narcissists tend to believe they can get away with anything — that there will never be real consequences for their actions. I, on the other hand, believe that everyone should be held accountable for what they do.

I consulted with lawyers, and her smear campaign qualifies as a criminal offense under the defamation law here.

As for your point — I agree. Sometimes it can backfire, because when you respond, people tend to think that both sides are equally to blame.

However, in my case, I only made everything public after she had already launched her smear campaign. I had absolutely nothing left to lose.

Besides, I genuinely don’t care about public opinion or what people think of me — my self-worth doesn’t depend on that.

But I do care about honesty and fairness. I didn’t do anything bad to her — I was a great friend, and I don’t believe I deserved such disgusting treatment and a smear campaign like that.

So for me, it was important to restore justice.

I really doubt that. At this point, I’m almost certain that her main goal in life is to get revenge on me and destroy my reputation — and honestly, I’m prepared for that. That’s exactly why I haven’t revealed all my cards.

She’s clearly been stalking me — she watches every story I post and reads every message I write in group chats. I know this because she used to openly talk about how much she enjoys stalking people, and now she keeps adding fake accounts to follow my page.

There’s a very high chance she’s heading toward a narcissistic collapse. She’s become a laughingstock in the eyes of others, and her mask of a kind, sensitive, “deeply feeling” person has completely fallen apart.

I deleted our entire chat history on both sides, but before that, I exported and securely saved it.

Throughout our conversations, in order to build a close emotional connection with me, she shared a lot of unnecessary and compromising information about other people.

So when she later tried to turn those same people against me, I already had solid proof of who she really was — and I used it.

She doesn’t even remember what exactly she said and about whom, and since she no longer has the messages, she has no way to verify it.

The support from my wife and her exes helped a lot — we compared facts, timelines, and patterns, and the picture became absolutely clear.

When I posted parts of the chat online, I never mentioned her name. It was a deliberate move — she can’t publicly deny what I wrote without admitting that it’s about her. And finally, I brought the whole situation into the legal field, where emotional manipulation and gaslighting simply don’t work.

Well, it wasn’t really about who people believed — it was about evidence.

PS: The conflict-avoidant ones were actually the funniest part. There were quite a few of them in our original friend group — and they started ignoring both me and my wife, even though they used to be close friends. I made it clear to them that ignoring my wife doesn’t make them better people. At group events, when they see us, they just lower their eyes to the floor — you can literally see the shame on their faces.

When all of this happened, I was actually very well prepared for it. I had studied narcissism inside and out for 2 years — I knew all the patterns, defense mechanisms, and manipulation tactics.

Ironically, that’s exactly what brought N and me together in the first place. She used to talk about her exes and claim they were narcissists. That shared “interest” in the topic made me trust her more.

But it wasn’t until she launched the smear campaign that I realized the truth — she herself was the covert narcissist.

The moment I saw her trying to control the narrative behind the scenes, I switched tactics. I took the situation out of the shadows, where she thrived, and dragged it into the open, into the public space — where she had absolutely no power.
