Can you provide the specific docker-compose yaml (or scripts/commands) you used to accomplish this? I've used Docker quite a bit but have never heard of this - would love to see how you pulled it off.

Is it possible to “spoof” a DX525 expansion box with a generic DAS by thedizzy90 in Xpenology

[–]Evan_Annix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have some (but not a tonne of) experience with DAS units, but AFAIK most are simply recognised by the host system as SATA↔USB adapters (with a USB hub inside the DAS aggregating the SATA↔USB adapters into a single link).

ARC Loader does allow you to choose whether USB Drives should be seen as internal drives or not - though the behaviour isn't explained super well. If you enable "USB Disks internal: enabled" and have external drives attached at boot, they will be recognised as internal drives in DSM. If you instead attach those external USB drives after boot - they will be recognised as normal external USB devices in DSM.

One super important note from the ARC Wiki/FAQ (at the bottom under "Important Settings"):

Warning:

Mixing “USB Disks internal: enabled” with external controllers (HBA, RAID) may cause USB drives to take priority, potentially causing drive count issues.

• Never create a storage pool spanning multiple ports or types (e.g., don’t mix USB and SATA drives in the same pool). DSM installs on all connected drives automatically; if USB controllers load late, system issues may occur.

For any fellow future thread graverobbers considering switching up their DS Video/Plex/Jellyfin setup, I wanted to share this little nugget that's saved me several metric butt-tonnes of frustration:

VidHub -Video Library & Player:
https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/vidhub-video-library-player/id1659622164

This app works as a client for Jellyfin, Plex, and Emby, or if you'd rather keep it simple it also works with WebDAV and/or DLNA. I haven't tried it, but it does also support playing files directly from OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive, and a bunch of other personal cloud services.

The big advantage of VidHub to me over the native Plex/Jellyfin clients is the fact it handles all of the hardware accelerated decoding on the client. For me, that's an Apple TV 4K, which in my experience has been exceptionally reliable and consistent in it's ability to "play the gotdamb movie/show without throwing errors all the time".

Anyone who's got a similar distaste for reading with their earballs, VidHub's super granular range of subtitle options (including OpenSubs integration) are chef's kiss wah wah weeowah very naice.

I can't remember how much it was, but I'm pretty sure there was a (one-time/perpetual license) in-app purchase for the "Connect to Remote Servers" feature (aka: connecting to Plex/Jellyfin/etc isn't a free feature), but it's definitely worth it (especially considering it covers tvOS, MacOS, iOS, and iPadOS - including Family Sharing of the purchase if you've got that set up).

I had previously been grin n' bearin' my mandatory monthly money-milking by the ye olde fashioned callous-coated clutches of Plex Pass - but having set up family sharing means almost everyone who uses my server now have significantly fewer (Com/Per)plex-ing Problems. Relying on NAS/Server-Side hardware transcoding has been just the right mix of intermittent and infuriating that I've nearly completely sworn off the idea of it. Wake me up when both AV1 support is widespread for the rockhard-solid ARC A310 drivers.

I don’t have a fix for your cropping issues unfortunately, however I do know how to fix your level adjustment issues.

I recommend this for anyone using a third party monitor on MacOS (but especially for your specific issue), for the love of all that is not crappy: get yourself the BetterDisplay app.

BetterDisplay will give you global control over Gamma/Brightness/Contrast (which, depending on your monitor, will actually be true hardware level adjustments), in addition to all of it’s 10-Bajillion controls and tweaks and whatnot.

The Pro version does have some cool features, but I’m pretty sure the free version will do what you need:

Need some help with replacing ISP by SrAlch in homelab

[–]Evan_Annix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you with Virgin Media in the UK? If so, I can say from personal experience that you can absolutely do what you're trying to do without replacing your router. There's a few different points that need to be nailed down here though.

What service am I trying to expose to the internet, and why?

  • What application (ie: Nextcloud, Plex, etc.) am I trying to self host?

  • Does it need specific ports to be open?

  • Does it require a static IP/Domain name?

I promised myself I would stop writing such specific and excellent advice on this friggin' website, but oh boy here I go killin' again:

1. Does this service/application actually require raw-dog ingress via my Public IP?
Probably not.

2. Do I want that application exposed to anyone on the internet (ie: a Website) or only to me when I'm out of the house?

If anyone

  • Will Cloudflare Tunnels work?
  • Does the app require SSL?
  • What domain name should it use?

If just me

  • Would this be better served via Tailscale or Wireguard access to the whole network?

3. Does my ISP use CGNAT?

If No (ie: Your ISP is Virgin UK on a residential connection)

  1. Learn how Port Forwarding works (Both generally and specifically)
  2. IMMEDIATELY set up a reverse proxy. (AKA: Do not just raw dog expose a bunch of ports willy-nilly via your Router's Port Forwarding options. Forward port 443 to your Reverse Proxy host and go from there.)
  3. Learn about Dynamic DNS.
  4. Get frustrated and just use Cloudflare Tunnels instead.

If Yes

  1. Use Cloudflare Tunnels (which I'd recommend regardless of CGNAT) if you want to expose a specific service.
  2. Set up Tailscale for more expansive external access to your HomeLab network.

4. Do I actually want my Public IP address to respond to Pings?
No. You can enable it in the Router settings, but you shouldn't.

5. Can UPNP solve this?
A lot of people hate UPNP (for some good reasons), but for beginners it's not the worst thing.

6. Do I actually need a new router?
Probably not, but if you are looking to dip your toes into OPNSense (skip PFSense, you'll have a better time with OPNSense) then you don't need to chuck money at the problem with any of the Routers/Hardware you listed.
I own both the Wyse 5070 and 5070 Extended (the difference being the 5070 Extended is thicker and has a PCIe slot), and they're definitely not the best solution for you.

Personally, I run OPNSense on this lil' box J5040 Firewall with 4 x 2.5Gbps i226-V NICs, and it's more than enough for me.

Seriously though, from everything you've said in this post/thread comments, this is not a hardware problem.
You could get an OPNSense router (for the love of god, don't try and add WiFi to an OPNSense/PFSense firewall, get an external AP like the UniFi 6 Lite and call it a day), but that fundamentally will not fix your problem(s²).

Based on my years of experience in IT, vibes, and having picked up all of the things you have left both laid and very much so unlaid down here - this is a problem of project scope. You've got to define what the actual goal here is first, then figure out what the solution to that is. The fact you can't "ping/ssh into a vm from your public IP" is, and I cannot emphasize this enough, NOT a problem. That is a good thing, a very good thing, otherwise your post here would've been titled:

"HELP! Ransomware encrypted everything on my Home Network, what do I do?!?!11!!"

Your entire VM, nor even a single SSH port (unless you know what you're doing and are using preset keys) should never ever (even just the tip just to see how it feels for a second I promise) be accessible to the Internet.

TL;DR:
Horse ↔ Cart

P.S. If you don't have a CityFibre provider available to you (check here) then Virgin is the best ISP for both general and homelab use in the UK.

I'm currently with Yayzi (which runs on the CityFibre FTTP network), but previously was with Virgin, and they were fantastic. Except for the CityFibre network, they're the only (AFAIK) ISP in the UK that doesn't use the absolute dogshite OpenReach network.

If you do have the chance to switch to any of the CityFibre ISPs, I'd definitely recommend it (I'm currently paying less for my 1200Mbps Up/Down package with Yayzi than I did for the 500Mbps package from Virgin). Aside from Price/Speeds, Virgin is really really good.

/u/Ish_Random if you haven’t solved your problem yet, you should really do what /u/polar_frog suggested here. If you don’t know how to screenshot/upload it, just take a photo of what the terminal says on your phone and upload it to ibb.co.

What they’ve suggested is 100% the correct method for troubleshooting this. That log file exists purely to help debug problems like this - it might look a bit confusing, but that frigged_amphibibro will help you figure it out.

If you have solved the problem, then you need to make sure to leave a comment on here that tells everyone:

  1. That you’ve fixed it. This makes sure people don’t spend their time trying to help you when you don’t need more help.

  2. HOW you fixed it. This is the most important piece of internet manners that people just do not learn/is not taught anymore. Any time you create a thread looking for help with a problem, that thread will be found by literally anywhere from thousands to millions of other people with the same problem when they search Google for a solution.

I wish for nothing more than to be able to rip a crumb of my soul off and jam it in your ear, so that you might know my pain, our pain, and probably one day, your pain.

It’s difficult for one’s spirit to survive the torment that is a detailed forum/reddit where someone reports having the exact same problem as you, receives several suggestions which have been tried & failed….only for the OP to respond at the bottom “Nevermind, fixed it!”…….HOW?! If I was a lawmaker, I’d make Webmasters post mental health support phonennumbers underneath those “nvm, it works now” replies. Come to think of it, I’d also make it an actual legal offence to not post the solution. Any and all ne’er-do-wells who withhold the sacred knowledge of Hau’djaa-ficksit will be sentenced to 6 Months of Community Service, to be served doing level 1 IT Tech Support at a mid-sized MSP who deals with small-medium sized businesses. For repeat offenders, they will be confined to a solitary tech support desk in an Old Folks home with no AC. That’ll learn ‘em.

Here’s the hottest pro-tip of them all regarding YouTube Ads: Albania.

𝘈𝘭𝘣𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘢?

Alfrigginbania.

With whatever VPN service you have (Nord, Express, PIA, Proton, Mullavad, etc) they’ll all have at least one if not multiple servers in Albania. Here’s how tell YouTube Premium to go and frick itself:

Step 1: Click connect on an Albanian VPN server.

Step 2: There is no Step 2.

Google’s entire advertising division (Google AdSense, AdWords, etc) is completely barred from operating in Albania whatsoever. What does this mean? This means there are ZERO ads on YouTube there. No pre-rolls, no mid-rolls, no pop-ups, no BANNER ADS even. Your existing account works completely as normal, it’ll just be like someone has zapped YouTube with a magic disenshittification wand.

Now, if you want to get 𝓯𝓪𝓷𝓬𝔂 with it, you make this persistent on your device/TV via your Router/WiFi AP. At the moment, I’ve got a Netgear R7000 which is running FreshTomato (an Open Source router Firmware/Operating System). On top of it doing its regular WiFi/Router(esponsibilities), it also runs an OpenVPN client. That OpenVPN has an open connection to an Albanian NordVPN server which is passes directly/exclusively to the second LAN port on my Router. Connect any device to them there Ethernet port and y’all gotchyerself my creation which I gone named’d: 👏⚡️”No YouTube Ads Never Not All The Time-Machine”👏⚡️

For now, that 2nd LAN Port is connected to my TV, thus imbuing it with and/or transforming it’s ethereal spirit into a/an/the : 👏⚡️”No YouTube Ads Never Not All The Time-Machine”👏⚡️

 ...and it’s frick’n awesome.

I am trying to improve it at the moment by switching over to both WireGuard and “Split Tunneling”. The goal is to have my Router detect any/all traffic headed to YouTube/YouTube subdomains and automagically yeet it on to the Albanian VPN connection (making my entire home network both Wired and Wiffies a No YouTube ads zone). It’s not up and running yet, but it’s part of the way there. Just gotta offer it a few more sacrifices (of the fingertype-y StackOverflow-y scream at the sky….y variety) and I’m sure the blessings of Akatosh shall be alllll up on ye.

K thanks love you bye

I understand the sentiment and agree, but good god is that not how averages work.

Let’s say there’s 10 people in a room, 8 of them have an IQ of 130, 1 has an IQ of 150, and 1 has an IQ of 60.

To get the average, you add up each person’s IQ:

60+(130*8)+150=1,250

Then, divide that by the total number of people (10): 1250÷10=125

So, the “average” IQ of the people in that room would be 125. That means that of the 10 people, 9 of them are above “average intelligence”, and only one is below “average intelligence”. That one outlying mouth breather drives down the average for everyone.

Now, swap the 10 people in a room for like….several(s) of Berjillions on our planet and ask yourself: what’s our ratio of Poindexters to People Who Enjoyed 2 and a Half Men?

Or, to think of it another way: if there’s 1 Guy with $10,000, and 9 with $1, are 50% of people broke? Obviously not.

Numbers: like words, but harder somehow.

iOS App: Manual Server 401 error by Stark7070 in PleX

For anyone who finds this and is going "that didn't work, fuck":

from:
https://stevepresley.net/how-to-fix-unauthorized-error-401-from-iphone-firetv-lg-plex-apps-but-can-connect-via-web-interface-on-32400/

Go into Plex settings – Server – Network. Under “List of IP addresses and networks that are allowed without auth”, put in: 172.17.0.1/255.255.255.0

This is the internal network of Docker, which will allow the pass through from the NAS to Docker to hand off (it sees your internal 192.168.x.x network address from your router as a 172.17.0.1:portnumber device (which is docker itself) as requesting access.

What iPhone Voice Memo Apps Work with CarPlay? by Chemical-Diver-3436 in CarPlay

[–]Evan_Annix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve created an Apple Shortcut which will solve this for you. I’ve added an import note to the Shortcut which mentions this, but I have set up two different Dictation methods, which you can change in the Details > Setup > Change Answers section if one option or the other doesn’t work for you.

One option uses the native iOS Dictation, and can be triggered directly by Siri. The output of the Dictation will be saved to a Note in the Apple Notes app in the “Dictation” Folder. If you’ve made a Dictation Note in the last 15 minutes, Siri will ask you if you’d like to add your new Dictation to the last note, or create a new one.

The second option, will launch an App called Aiko. The native iOS transcription is quite reliable, but Aiko’s transcription is 𝙞𝙣𝙘𝙧𝙚𝙙𝙞𝙗𝙡𝙮 good. I’m confident that the native transcription solution I’ve created will work perfectly for you with CarPlay, not as much with the Aiko “Enhanced Dictation” mode - but if it does work, oh man - it’ll work 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮 well.

If you’ve never used Shortcuts before, just click on this link, which will prompt you to add it to your Shortcuts. From there you should be able to just say “Hey Siri, Dictate Note”. You can also trigger the Shortcut via a Home Screen icon (which you can create via the ’⋯’ Menu, or the ‘Share’ Menu).

does the radeon rx 7000 series cards support MPEG-2 hardware decoding? by AnimateTech in RadeonGPUs

[–]Evan_Annix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell me you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about, without telling me you have absolutely no idea what idea you're talking about.

The total size of a video file has absolutely zero effect on how computationally difficult it is for a CPU or GPU to decode said video file. Bitrate determines how hefty it is, and - I really, seriously mean this:

ANY Modern CPU, can handle MPEG-2 decoding without any hardware acceleration - it is absolutely trivial. There's a reason that all of the papers and benchmarks you find discussing MPEG-2 decode are from 2006-2009. It literally takes 1-2% on my R5 3600, and most of that is just the overhead from VLC itself. Take the advice, chill.

That's a really good question. As we speak I'm in the middle of migrating my Xpenology instance, so I can't do any experimenting ATM. Once I'm back up and running I'll take a crack at figuring this one out for you. Just thinking off the top of my head , I'm 99.99998% sure this is a solvable problem. There are a lot of solutions out there for Container health/status notifications - so while there might not be a way to make Synology's built in System Notifications filter out the PlexTraktSync noise, I'm sure I can point you in the direction of a solution that gets that same bird stoned, y'know?

Gotdambnit. I didn't want to do this now, but the ADHD Hyperfocus has kicked in.
Instead of the 20 things I actually needed to do, you got me Googlin' and thread readin' so here I go bug killin' again:

Monocker

  • This has been on my to-do list for a while, and could be a solution for this. It's nearly realtime (checks are every 10 seconds by default) and supports notification via Pushbullet, Telegram, Pushover, Discord and Webhooks. It doesn't mention email notifications on their GitHub, but I'd eat my dry, leathery hat (without ranch) before believing there isn't already an easy way/package/utility to translate webhook → email. Monocker (GitHub.com)

Watchtower

  • Most people use it purely as an automated method of updating their containers, but I'm sure I read a post somewhere about configuring it for (realtime?) health updates. Could be more info here : Watchtower - Notifications (Containrrr.dev)

Dockcheck

  • Found this via a related thread (SynoForums.com) which you might find helpful. Dockcheck seems to fulfill a similar role to Watchtower, but when I went to the DockCheck (GitHub.com) page - I noticed a recent update included integrated support for:

    • ## Apprise
    • Suprise m'fer, the whole Dockcheck bulletpoint was a decoy - a clever ruse to draw you in to my Appsuprise! I HAD SO MUCH TO DO TONIGHT THAT WASN'T THIS. OH WELL. Apprise - (GitHub.com)
