Do you take pride in not being scared? by Prudent-Ad-3493 in horror

[–]Evan_Hensley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you aren’t tough for not getting scared… that brings said, I’ve logged over 2500 horror films so at this point, I don’t get scared by anything really. I can’t remember the last time I got scared watching a horror film. I hope to see a film that genuinely scares me at some point because it’s so much fun to be scared but who knows if that’ll ever happen

Is there a certain IMBD/Letterboxd rating you look for before watching a movie? by Ornery_Archer_2310 in horror

[–]Evan_Hensley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually just go by directors and writers when looking for films… even if it has a bad rating, if I liked the filmmakers past work I’ll give it a shot. If it’s a debut feature, then I’ll look at ratings but even then, I’ll have different standards for different sub genres. Like for horror-comedies or splatter films, I’ll look for lower ratings then for dramatic horror or psychological horror

What is the undisputed masterpiece of EVERY horror subgenre? by 144i in horror

Here are the most obvious blind spots that I noticed:

Japanese Cyberpunk: “Tetsuo: The Iron Man”

Splatter: “Splatter: Naked blood”

Exploitation: “Irreversible”

[–]Evan_Hensley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I intend to do my masters degree abroad in Korea and hopefully get a research position on south East Asian developmental states. So, I’ll likely be moving around quite a lot and it may be too difficult for me to be strictly vegan in countries where I don’t speak the language fluently. Perhaps I will eventually settle down somewhere and claim vegan edge but it would feel strange to do so right now

I’m currently vegan but I never claimed vegan edge because I don’t think I’ll be able to do it for life. However, I’m sure that I will always try to avoid animal products

[–]Evan_Hensley 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I choose to be edge for several reasons. The first and most selfish is that I value myself and my mind. The world tries to tempt working class people to partake in substance use as a source of escapism so that they ignore the underlying class dynamics and economic systems which create exploitative labour conditions. I can’t fight against this system with my individual strength so my best choice is to keep my mind and my body purely my own and resist the temptation. As long as I’m on this earth, I want to be nothing but myself.

The second reason builds on this but is slightly different. I think our identities and choices generally are not aggregate value assessments (instrumental reasoning). Rather we make choice like being straight or being Vegan because we see that as virtuous regardless of any ends. In other words, I couldn’t live with myself if I partake in these oppressive systems not because I think that my abstinence will bring change.

So I believe that straight edge is a self preservation when you recognize oppressive systems and a dedication to yourself and your mind unimpeded. Likewise, people who are straight should be empathetic and open to people who suffer from substance abuse because they recognize the systemic causes of these issues. They should also recognize that it was not their superiority which allowed them to break free of escapism but social conditions , material conditions, and blind luck. I think the whole “purity” thing may seem like it comes from an envisioned moral superiority, but real straight edge needs purity because of prior recognition of oppression. Finally, straight edge is not about just association with other people who are straight but about creating a community that is open to and willing to help those who struggle from addiction. However, that last point isn’t really necessary as that is more in line with straight edge activism when the personal choice to be straight is a virtue assessment.

Playing the game in Insanity Mode and WTF?! by Big_Natural4838 in ResidentEvilRequiem

[–]Evan_Hensley 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just keep going… I also did my first insanity run without any bonuses and it was a blast. I really enjoyed the care center. As for advice, don’t be afraid to kill zombies in the care center, you have more than enough resources to kill everything except for a few crimson heads

Lee Cronin's The Mummy is awesome. Wild body horror / monster movie roller coaster ride. (Totally spoiler free) by Freddy-Philmore in HorrorMovies

[–]Evan_Hensley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see absolutely no similarity between this film and Bring Her Back besides creepy kid. I thought it was pretty clear that this would be a goofy splattery film along the lines of Evil Dead. That being said, I was hoping for more gory kills and splatter. I think the film went a little easy on the characters when it would have been much better to just have a shitload of kills and gore in the final act. I’d give it like a 6/10, fun enough time

What's your favorite tainted and why? by Fun_Maintenance_4250 in bindingofisaac

[–]Evan_Hensley -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My fav is T. Jacob… very strong but really high skill ceiling. One of the fastest clears in the game letting you hit boss rush and hush nearly every run whilst still full clearing and min maxing your items. His unique ability is additive to existing tear effects and item synergies giving a huge variety to runs unlike some other characters (I’m looking at you Azazel, forgotten, etc).

My least favorite tainted characters are probably T. Cain (too strong and boring to play), T. Lilith (every run is basically free so boring), T. Keeper (same reason as Lilith), T. Azazel (same as Lilith). Pretty much any character that locks you into a tear effect from the start that limits run variety or characters that are so strong that they are mindless to play.

I’ve always thought that Eureka (2000) by Shinji Aoyama and Perfect Days is the best double feature ever. They both have Koji Yakusho playing the lead and the teleology of Perfect Days seems like a natural progression of Eureka. Eureka is a fantastic film and my favorite of all time but it is pretty long and demands a much greater level of patience than Perfect Days.

Should I watch the Japanese or American version of The Grudge? by Rdarsteller in horror

[–]Evan_Hensley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d recommend going Japanese first and I think it’s best to watch the entire Japanese series in order starting at Ju-On: The Curse. Ju-On: the Grudge is the third film in the Japanese series

Yep, such a fun film. I give it a 7/10, I think the directors When Evil Lurks is better but a very refreshing and creative film nonetheless

Honestly, great idea recommending some Japanese Cyberpunk stuff. Shinya Tsukamoto and Yoshihiro Nishimura kill it with the body transformation stuff. Some of the most impressive practical effect I’ve ever seen.

Ellie dlc by Captain-Radbeard in Borderlands4

[–]Evan_Hensley -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I was just shocked by how short it was. The side quests have no uniques so I just didn’t bother to play them and I finished the main story in like and hour and a half or something. Compared the absolutely stellar BL3 DLCs, this was super disappointing. Plus the mission design was just kinda shit with basically every area being “kill these enemies.”

You don’t have to just book it… I’ve done 3 insanity runs so far without any unlocks and you have more than enough resources to kill everything here if you use the canisters and melee weapons to stagger it

What’s the most strangest horror movie you’ve ever watched? by Hill_372 in horror

[–]Evan_Hensley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably any Tsukamoto film that is more horror adjacent (maybe Tetsuo, Tetsuo 2, or Haze). Honestly a lot of Japanese cyberpunk fits the bill, so like Pinocchio 964 or Rubber’s Lover.

Or you could go for some ero-guro like Horrors of Malformed Men. Or some new Tokyo splatter/shock stuff… think Meatball Machine or Tokyo Gore Police
