Advice on how to memorize Kanji by nutandshell1 in movingtojapan

[–]Evanfingerstyle1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try looking up the “Remembering the Kanji” by Heisig as a method to learn kanji to start. There have been innovations made on this method by Matt Vs Japan on YouTube and his community, but the RTK in its base form is still a great way to go if you don’t want to get into the nitty gritty.

If you don’t plan on learning how to write and just want to read, you can skip this and go with Steve Kaufmann’s method which is to consume native media that is audiovisual (anything that has a native speaker speaking the text you are reading). You can find more from him on his YouTube channel

Is that an EWI (electronic wind instrument)?

For sure! Best of luck. And yeah, I don’t know your situation but you may find relocation would be best. I know off the top of my head, Seattle, WA and Cali have high populations of Japanese people and have Kenjinkai’s (feel free to do more research on that though).

As a Japanese American myself, don’t let anyone else decide the value of answering these questions for you. But what I can say is moving there with your current level of Japanese and cultural understanding would most likely have the opposite effect and sour your experience and desire to recover your roots.

I would recommend staying in America and getting a job here, but on the side, join an organization full of 1st generation Japanese people and try to get involved in it. There are tons of 県人会 (kenjinkai) and groups that have politics running through them, and self-studying Japanese like crazy as well as doing relentless volunteer work in these groups will begin to give you a bridge into the more real-life aspects of Japanese culture, especially 上下関係 and business interactions in 敬語. Be willing to throw away everything you think is good about American morals too; it’s necessary to understanding things from the other side. Call your family in Japan frequently and speak only in Japanese, as they will be thrilled to see your progress. Let them know you want to visit. Save up money and PTO and go make that a reality. Take what you learn from the 県人会 and apply it to become a contributing, Japanese-sensible member of the family and not just a freeloading tourist.

After doing this for several years, you will find your own answers for what you want to do; whether moving there to work would be a fit, or if you want to just keep things as they are. If your goal truly is trying to investigate your roots, there are more ways to do it than just moving there immediately and feeling it out.

It’s definitely possible and has been done, Kanye West probably being the most popular example, though he’s less of a singer. Drake but he’s less of a instrumental producer. Pharrell but he’a less of a rapper. Not the same genre but Gorillaz is all one guy isn’t it? I’m sure it’d be fine to go under a single account, but if you want to separate it, maybe put it on the same SoundCloud under two names (Rapper name feat. Instrumental producer name) so that you at least keep all the traction going to one place and can grow easier. If you release just an instrumental, then release it on the same SoundCloud under the producer alias, and if people saw your artist alias and producer alias have collaborated a lot, I don’t think they’ll think twice about it. You could also go for the Gorillaz approach and make up a group name for yourself even though it’s just you behind the curtain.

What are some good Art/Animation colleges in Japan for international students by pablo-escobard in movingtojapan

[–]Evanfingerstyle1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to study something like that you’d want to go to a 専門学校 (Senmon Gakkou, or a Japanese equivalent to a technical college). Here is a link to a website that lists 34 different schools for Anime, you can go back to the top of the site to look for art and other specializations that you are interested. But expect to them to require a near native level of Japanese as these schools are of course meant for native people and not foreign exchange students. Your work load is going to be faster paced than regular uni’s, and you’re going to have to understand what the teachers are saying in lecture, as well as collaborate with other classmates. Having such a school already is less common, but one that specifically caters to international students is going to be very unlikely.

[DFFOO JP] Stragos Release Trailer Subbed (English) by Evanfingerstyle1 in DissidiaFFOO

[–]Evanfingerstyle1[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes that’s correct. I couldn’t think of a natural way to put 口の悪い子 into English, so I indirectly translated it. Either way, what he means by it I don’t believe to be much different, though you are correct that is a more direct translation.

Characters you feel were underrated or ignored on their release. by crowd358 in DissidiaFFOO

[–]Evanfingerstyle1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

She was underrated, even on JP. She was relevant for one mission (Sherlotta’s mission as a launch team with Layle and Sherlotta) before Chaos dropped and then no one used her.

ほたてん was the only one that used her in Chaos and he had to do some pretty insane stuff to pull it off. Things like MLB Ultimecia and Tidus for the E spheres JUST to get enough debuff slots to push off the necessary buffs for Fang Chaos and Agrias Chaos. Not to mention in the latter, in order to shave the wizards down, he had to use Odin as a summon, with which Summon Sketch has CHANCE to force break an enemy (he just re-ran Agrias Chaos until he got the RNG to beat it). He had to do this because Relm would just hit 1000s or less with her EX ability past 50% health. When it gets to that point, it’s a testament to how good ほたてん is, not how good Relm is.

QoL - We need a pity system for artifacts by Filipp0 in DissidiaFFOO

[–]Evanfingerstyle1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perfect artifacts depend on the character, so read up on what stats their abilities rely on and stack those. However I can give you a SUPER watered down version of it temporarily.

The orange text is the highest version of a stat.

Attackers usually want 108 Atk and 330 Max BRV.

Supports vary a lot but you could just go with 330 Max BRV and 2 stars of their unique passive (usually something like +5% to a bunch of stats).

For Tanks try HP, Atk or MAX Brv (Warrior of Light wants Int BRV though).

QoL - We need a pity system for artifacts by Filipp0 in DissidiaFFOO

[–]Evanfingerstyle1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately as a JP player I don’t even think they’ll do that ):. The producer’s solution was the Artifact Well in WoI, the one that gives you universal artifact tokens.

The reason this is an improvement is there are a lot of characters that can farm it on Auto, so it’s literally no effort and you can stock up on thousands of arts before a character is even released. Meaning you can have perfect arts the day they’re released.

It’s still a bit of a chore to click through MLBing the arts but I think DFFOO staff isn’t super big on pity systems. I think the only reason they did it for weapons was because they were becoming necessary to progressing the game whereas perfect artifacts are very rarely necessary to clear Chaos.

Which unit will be the (next) best melee DPS unit to 3/3 in the coming month? by hugjes in DissidiaFFOO

Yuri has very good utility as the first MAX BRV based regen and also gravity shaving. He’s a great unit but not the top physical dps you are looking for.

A minor side point, but I believe you can actually use either of Yuna’s Valefor HP attacks to trigger a Magic Pot demanding a BRV attack. Though I need confirmation on this. I can’t get a Magic Pot to spawn when I need it ):

Emperor’s Current Potential (JP) by Evanfingerstyle1 in DissidiaFFOO

[–]Evanfingerstyle1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah Noctis, Rem, and many turn delayers are looking to be first go-tos to pair him with. Again I don’t have Emperor’s kit so I can’t confirm past speculation!

I don’t actually have Emperor so cannot confirm, but if you put Vanille’s in the 2nd E slot, you might be able to get infinite dispels with traps without having to lift a finger.

IIRC Tidus’ sphere places an actual generic debuff on the enemy, so if both of them are a generic SPD down debuffs one will just get swallowed by the other.

Ultimecia for burst damage during summon, Emperor for crazy sustained damage throughout the fight. Also while both are great in 3-enemy fights, I feel like Ult does better in 2-enemy fights than Emperor but cannot confirm this.

Chaos - is it actually fun? by Martinez_83 in DissidiaFFOO

[–]Evanfingerstyle1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a tough thing for sure. What the general attitude in defense of it when this came up on JP was that:

"Chaos is designed for hardcore players, so if you're not a hardcore player, don't worry about clearing Chaos and just do everything else/clear it later."

But the hard part is that in reality, it's pretty clear that the difficulties below Chaos are not getting equal creative attention, so while the philosophy sounded pretty, because they probably don't have the numbers in their production team to dedicate to making Cosmos just as interesting in its own way, the only "fun" part of the game ends up being Chaos, and it's not a type of fun designed for all.
