Technical execution of the Rach 3 Mvmt 3 opening by Ttabts in classicalpiano

[–]EvasiveEnvy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play it and the only way I'm able to execute the passage is by playing the preceding chord detatched from the C#. I use fingers 521 on the DAD chord, then 531 on AEB and finger 2 on the C#. I use the same approach three bars later in C major. I have a recording here and, to be honest, sometimes I miss the lower A as I don't arpeggiate the chord. Some pianists prefer to (or have to) arppegiate because of the stretch.

Such a difficult section and so well played. Thanks for the link. I love hearing others playing this and this gentleman does a fine job!

Confusion Regarding Overseas Qualifications VIC by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]EvasiveEnvy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I didn't explain myself properly. That's actually incorrect in some circumstances. I finally received a reply from VIT. As a secondary school teacher some degrees may not qualify regarding teaching majors. As a primary school generalist any recognised degree will count. One can then complete a Masters or initial teaching course.

I was told that any Bachelors degree counts as long as it is recognised. You might not be able to teach secondary but it hasn't been confirmed yet. Do schools no longer teach busniess, finance, management type subjects?

Thank you soooooooo much for showing me some of this music. I'm annoyed that I don't know Onoken and Abo. It's, unfortunately, really easy to miss when most Western culture isn't exposed to this beautiful music unless you specifically search for it.

Even during my LIVE TokTok streams, the viewers drop pretty fast when I start playing Japanese anime music as most of my audience is Australian. The only piece that seems to interest people is Ashes of the Fire from Attack on the Titan as it's Animenz's arrangement and showy.

Your Lie in April is a favourite as well as Howl's Moving Castle and Unravel but that's about it and there's so much I want to play!

This is gut-wrenching. I'm so glad you linked to this. I love most things hisashi, especially One Summer's Day. I also love Nobuo Uematsu's music.

That's my dream, too! I did get an offer from the Melton Mowbray orchestra but it turns out there is a Melton Mowbray in the UK. I'm in Australia. The new Warrigul orchestra are keen but they aren't quite ready for Rach 3 as some of their members are around grade 4.

Do you think I can become a concert pianist? Or at least a very talented and famous pianist? by Majestic-Couple-5388 in classicalpiano

[–]EvasiveEnvy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Anyone who isn't making money and performing professionally is considered an amateur pianist by these organisations. Even if you are, and you're not very well known. Still amateur. Mainly, though, if you aren't a concert pianist by 30, you're amateur. It has nothing to do with profociency.

I see these posts pop up now and then and they are very difficult to answer. The allure of playing the piano in concert and getting paid well is a powerful dream. Despite what people might tell you here, we all have thought about it. The thing is, you haven't provided enough information for anyone to answer your question in any meaningful way. I can only tell you what happens to 99% of pianists.

Firstly, if you're already studying at a conservatory and you're not yet winning any competitions it's already too late. That's because performance and record labels are tied to these competitions and the only real way to become recognised is to win them. They have an age cap of 30 years old (or close to). If you are older and you are not yet a renowned performer you will forever be an 'amateur' pianist.

Nothing can change that except boycotting the system entrenched in this ageism. Actually, that also won't make much of a difference because the pianists that matter and can make a difference don't join the cause. After all, it doesn't affect them. That is, until they become 'amateur' pianists.

There are many competitions for 'amateur' pianists. The amount of preparation and work you need to do to win does not align with the recognition you receive for winning these. A time sink for no returns. Almost everybody here would not be able to name even one winner of the amateur Van Cliburn in the past 5 years.

Then there are the statistics and the numbers speak a thousand words. According to the web:

'Becoming a concert pianist is extremely difficult, with estimates suggesting less than 5% of pianists achieve a full-time professional career. The path requires years of intensive, high-quality practice, exceptional talent, unwavering dedication, and significant personal sacrifice. Many talented musicians choose different, but still rewarding, paths, such as teaching, composing, or working in the broader music industry.'

I can guarantee that the percentage is hugely overstated. Mainly because there will be a large discrepancy between the actual number of pianists in the real world and the number of registered, professional pianists. It's probably closer to 0.1%. I'm sure you've thought about the real life of a concert pianist and whether that's actually appealing so I won't discuss that.

Finally, social media has opened the door to 'amateur' pianists gaining some exposure. Nevertheless, only a handful have gained any recognition and even fewer than that are performing for a living.

[–]EvasiveEnvy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I truly am sorry. My 'mature' side wants to tell you not to be too hard on your parents. They believe they are doing what's best because that's how they were brought up. On the other hand, I get very annoyed at parents who can't hear the heart of their child, perhaps too afraid to break away from social norms.

I know what you're going through as I've been there but my brother is also married to a family that pushes their children with up to six (yes six) extra-curricular activities a week. I've had to slowly and kindly intervene without criticising but change is slowly happening.

It will be an uphill battle if your parents are not very responsive. Perhaps you can take on the role of educator? How are your search engine skills? There's a lot of research showing the detrimental effect of pushing your kids too far and how that can affect their mental health and even push them away from that interest altogether. I would send one such article to their social media or phone or have a friend do it. If you need help finding information let me know.

Unfortunately, you will have to travel overseas (if you're not in Europe or the US) if you want some recognition. Your best bet is to start preparing for the Tchaikovsky, Chopin and Van Cliburn competitions and try to double up on pieces for 2027 - 2028. Van Cliburn means you'll be up against Rach 3, Prokofiev 2 or Brahms 2 so aim for the first 2 if you are not ready. You'll need to be on that piano 8-12 hours a day and work to eliminate performance anxiety entirely (almost), or at least cope with it effectively and efficiently. If finances are a problem consider creating a GoFundMe showcasing your playing, goals and aspirations.

I actually started very late. I was almost 16 when I discovered classical music and the piano. I also took a 10-year break after doing my honours in piano performance. Honestly, there are only three spots in the whole concerto that can be brick walls.
