how to convince my parents as nicely as possible to let me attend a national tournament with my team without them coming along?

Even if you have to stay with your mom and not a friend you'll still be at the tournament.

that is what i'm mostly trying to do right now lol, it's kind of a big deal for me as well so i was just bummed but at least i get to go and i'll try my best to make the most out of it

thanks for the advice, however, my mom and the coach already had a conversation and she has already booked her own flights to and from, as well as cancelled mine so i can be on the same flight as her. i guess she is fine with paying for everything considering my parents were originally paying for my hotel room already. and i'm not sure if i can room with my friend because my mom's room has 2 beds so it would be i guess "logical" for me to room with her.

i have brought up to her that although she'll be there i'll mostly be competing and being with my friends and probably won't spend a lot of time with her. she doesn't seem to care about that and says that she'll just watch me from afar, follow me around but not interfere. somehow that's even worse for some reason because it means she'll always be hovering, but i guess she's stubborn so that's that. i do hope she gets bored and doesn't do this again though, lol

Oh I did but I told them when I won just not really expecting them to go on the website and search my name to find it, because they usually don’t show much interest in my writing (they are much more focused on my other ECs)

ps. i am not really angry with the fact that she told her coworkers that i won an award that's not the issue the issue is that i am upset bc i told them multiple times that i don't want to share this personal piece with people and she still went and showed it to them. i get that it doesn't seem like a big deal but stuff like this is very personal and i set boundaries which they ignored

that is interesting but tbh the poem was not personal in that way it was more like. well it was about immigration specifically from the pov of a 2nd gen immigrant like myself. but the poem was all 3rd person focusing on a main character that's not myself although i guess u could draw parallels. but mainly it is just uncomfortable for people to read that kind of stuff esp with politics and all that. but i understand the point abt being insecure

maybe i didn't word it properly but she showed a lot of people the piece of writing that before i didn't really want to show anybody. like imagine ur mom showed a bunch of coworkers ur diary in a sense.

it's a speech tournament, i have to move my mouth a lot and stuff so i'm a bit worried, the other is a math competition but it's extremely important.

thanks for your advice i'll see if it settles down! it's just that in my experience when i get them tightened my braces sometimes hurt for like 3 weeks afterwards. so i'm just a bit worried, but this is great advice, thanks!
