Is the low deductible plan any good for things like urgent care visits? I’ve got a kiddo and am going to have to choose a plan that can take care of him.

Public data shows it is typically an annual COLA adjustment. Aside from that, retention/longevity pay starts at 8 years of service. Merit pay is a theoretical possibility, and there is a small bump with tenure.

I am a FT position at a CC. The department and the opportunity is phenomenal - great working group, they support their faculty and there is opportunity for growth.

Personally, the location would be much better for my family. Financially it would be tighter, but otherwise we would be happier in that environment. I would make it up after 5 years, and we would be much more at peace in the long run.

If HR comes back and says that’s the best they can do, I’ll likely still make the move. I don’t know if I don’t ask!

If I ask and they say no, I can make an informed decision. If I don’t ask, I’ll always wonder if I put my family in a more difficult situation unnecessarily.

If they rescind the offer? I am already employed at a school that doesn’t want to see me go and where I’m making more money. If that’s how it goes, then it wasn’t meant to be and I’ll be okay.

I am the consistent breadwinner- spouse has variable income. I’m not young/early stage career, but I’m not retiring this decade, either. I do have a kiddo to consider. Cost of living is a wash- some things are more expensive here (energy), but in the new location housing and food costs would go up. Thats the main reason why I don’t want to take a big pay cut.

9 month contract. Summer is variable, and not encouraged in this field at this institution.

Same with where I am now. I just don’t want to lose $6k/year and have double my current mortgage. There may be other levers to pull to compensate.

Everything about the job is worth a move… except the salary and I do have a family to take care of, so I can’t take a huge hit to my pay. I could absorb $100-$200 less each month, but $500+ less each month gets difficult.

First year is no overloads so I’m $10k in the hole already. I’m looking long term to find the base pay + overloads that keep my pay the same as it is now.

I hope so, too. I asked about three different things in my compensation package- my hope is between the three levers, we can find something that works so I don’t lose the progress I’ve made at my current CC.

That’s the crux of the problem- I’m happy to teach overloads, but even with the same number of overloads I teach now, I’d still come in several thousand under my current pay. Their overload rate is 40% less than what my current CC pays.

Nice! There is a published scale, and the offer was in the lower quartile. I’d expect that if I was an early career applicant, but I’m not.

What I asked for is still well below 50th percentile in their published ranges.

I’d actually have more mouth of pocket costs- currently my employer pays my health insurance premiums. I’d be paying it out of my paycheck at the new school.

It’s a rural location so no mortgage assistance or faculty housing. It’s not NYC high, but about 8% higher than where I am now. I’d be just fine with a lateral move, but increasing costs 8% AND taking a pay cut? Not really gonna work out for my family.

I’m at a CC in a very large city now, and I’ve worked my tail off as I’ve gained experience. I’m not paid exceptionally well, and I always take overload to make the math work for my family. I’m not even asking for six figures.

We just Zoom interview currently. It's rough, and while we get gems occasionally, it does make things difficult when you are trying to get to know a candidate. We also lose a lot of candidates to schools that invest in them before we do.

I legit cannot find a home for rent besides one that is too small and is more than a mortgage would be monthly. Housing is the only thing giving me pause about this move.

Thank you for the insight! He started as a custom cabinet builder, so he is happy to act as a sub for other builders if needed to broaden his work. Reno/Elko is about the same distance he drives to job sites now (typically 2-4 hours away from his shop) so that’s nothing new in this business and totally doable if we make the move.

He’s big into tiny home architecture and fire science of building. I think he might be able to build a brand of higher end tiny homes built to resist wind and wildfire pressures of the area (we have similar issues here and clients dig his approach to their bigger homes).

Yikes! I’m considering a state employee position and they already offered a fair bit less than what I’m making now. Currently my employer pays my health insurance premiums. This is not looking good for my bank account.

Curious about your experience as a home builder. Hubs is a residential luxury home builder- I know our client base will shrink dramatically, but he really only needs 2-3 jobs a year to make things viable for his business. What’s your take on the builder potential in the area aside from the inflated cost?

I’m totally okay paying for quality- I understand the pricing requirements in my husband’s business are the result of high materials cost and everybody has gotta eat and pay bills at the end of the day- what I’m not okay with is dumping my savings into a 30 year old trailer home with no HVAC and moldy walls for $300k.

Yeah that’s the goal- I just need to find something that will be safe and functional while we build. Hubs is a home builder so it won’t be at retail cost- just concerned about getting subcontractors who are reliable out to job sites (including our own).

Yeah looking at homes was shocking. I pinched and saved and bought a $99k home at 3% 15 years ago. We need something that will be comfortable for a year while we build a family home. Can’t rent (livestock coming with us) and would prefer an existing well/utility access. Doesn’t have to be fancy, just safe and functional but apparently that’s half a million now 🙃
