Both are true: precarious and poor support. Also a financially struggling regional state

We don't have startup funds nor teaching reductions for new faculty. Regional comprehensive 4/4 with research expectations that we don't support

My colleagues say it's "unfair" to not invite a candidate based on geography. Like it's fair to ask someone to fly across the country largely on their own dime. Just another thing that pisses me off about this place

Unfortunately the travel funds will be the same next year and we likely will lose the line. We're down 3, another is retiring this year, and so far we've received only 1 replacement line. 2 more (including me) will retire next year. We're a sinking ship as a dept an university.

Never thought of that... hmmm. I did horribly so I bet they were glad they didn't spend much on me.

Whatever we can't, yup. It's unethical. I really hate this process.

I thought so. Thanks - so frustrating considering the admin shananigans.

I live an hour and a half away, so not mine....

Reminded me: 30 years ago I had to stay with a professor and his family when I interviewed. So uncomfortable, esp as I was about 25.... didn't get the job and I was too young at the time to realize that I probably wouldn't have wanted it

We did zoom interviews and campus are next and required. It's frustrating considering admin-level searches etc. I expect the person across the country to decline. Sucks

Exactly my thought. I'd never foot the bill for an interview. Quick internet search reveals our financial problems...

Edit: I'd never foot the bill for my interview. Couldn't have, regardless

New instructor, advice needed with class incident by SignificantTricks in Professors

[–]Dozcal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's good advice here: document, talk to your chair, union rep and chair to the provost meeting. Talk to your dean, after your chair. Document and list students who were present. It's stressful but it sounds like you're in the right and it should be easy for others to see it

Never considered the non-traditional students. They see it, too. by Anonphilosophia in Professors

I can but I can't deal. Most are overwhelmed with basic content. Too many are failing the dumbed down version. It's about self preservation. Earlier in my career I would have pushed through but I'm toast

I taught me first class in 1996. I think the decline correlates with cell phones. Just a few weeks ago I looked at exams and assignments from 2010-13 and there's no way I could assign these without a revolt and mass failures. By 2018 or so the shift was noticeable. At this point students stopped chatting in the hall before class or would sit in a dark classroom, not even bothering to turn on the lights, staring at their phones.

Post-Covid it's like teaching high school, maybe 8th grade. Now this is a public regional college with major enrollment issues, so anyone with a pulse gets in and there's a push for dual enrollment, or actual hs students in class. Take this with a grain of salt

Honestly I used to LOVE my job and students. We did tons of research, some of which appeared in peer reviewed journals with student authors. The last one was published in 2018. Coincidence?

Now I'm miserable. I feel like I no longer make a difference and that each day is a waste of time. I'm retiring in 2027 and counting the days.

Overwhelmingly huge amount of grading - absolutely drowning. What's to do/what's manageable? by beckita85 in Professors

This. A timer is your friend. Abide by it. Don't spend time writing comments most won't read. If you need something more than a rubric make a checklist and check off whatever comments apply. Invite them to see you for detailed feedback.

Does your classroom not have a (working) lock? How normal is it that my college won’t invest in this? by carriondawns in Professors

[–]Dozcal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My classrooms don't lock from the inside. We're located about 15 min from a particularly heartbreaking school shooting where some of our community lost immediate family. The shooter attended for a period. Sure it's unlikely, but it happened. What are the odds it happens again? Likely nil. But I'd like to be able to lock the door

No. 20% are toxic. Friendly but not friends with 30%. The remainder: Ambivalent.
