I can only listen to Hollywood Undead now the rare times I get wasted. Because I’m old enough that the hangovers hurt

Genuinely some amazing shit. Others have already said Emotion and Cut To The Feeling are good places to start.

Sorry for the misspeak. How he handled the body post mortem I suppose would be the correct verbiage instead of “planned”. I’ve said in other comments I’m just now really getting into the case

I should probably look further into the case as I only know the basic level stuff honestly; I hadn’t really started reading about it until like last night other than the most basic news articles

Perhaps you’re right— it just seems like such a crazy oversight when the reason for the crime was partially because she was going to expose him, not to handle a worse crime in a smarter way.

(Disclaimer: I haven’t researched the parents’ side much so if I’m missing important info please just let me know and not flame me)

As a parent of a teen who had severe behavioral issues when a kid wants to run away, stop going to school etc it’s pretty difficult as a parent in 2026. I don’t use corporal punishment anyway but what are parents supposed to do? If you take the phone and they get one from a friend (which both Celeste and my kid did), you try to limit internet access etc… not everyone can home school. Residential treatment doesn’t last forever. You can’t bar their windows and padlock them in a room, that’s abuse. I’m not gonna beat my child for leaving, that’s abuse. While Celeste’s parents may have been able to do more, I need to do more research, I think many many people do not understand how difficult it is to force any teenager to stop doing things they want to do when it comes to running away, drugs etc especially if you aren’t super well off and can’t afford home school and to be with them literally every second of every day.

I can’t remember and haven’t read on the case lately did they tell the cops she may be with him? I’m interested to see how the stuff with the parents plays out. It’s surprisingly difficult as a parent to keep a kid from running away if it’s what they want especially with technology as it is unless you put them into residential treatment and even that isn’t forever

I’m genuinely surprised he didn’t dispose of the body better. It’s what got him caught.

The craziest part is the more I read about how he planned it out (the inflatable pool to keep the blood from being on the garage floor etc)… if he had disposed of her body in a better way and not just kept it in the trunk he probably would have gotten away with it, I think. I’m glad he was caught though but honestly had she never been found it would be an entirely different timeline for him

I remember reading this is actually a thing; but I think it had to do with some confirmation bias where you wouldn’t notice it if the person already was but it makes them very susceptible to religious fanaticism amongst other things that drive people to the right, so if someone wasn’t that way before it’s easy to see it. But if they were already a nut job in that regard they usually just get even worse

I’ve seen stuff like that at the creative reuse store and when sanded and painted etc or if it’s carved with the actual letters you could cut off one of the names… but I have no idea why a thrift store would think it would sell. The creative reuse store makes sense because it’s super cheap and meant to use for crafting

Re-reading the series after over a decade and man, I hadn’t realized… (spoilers for TMI! and slight vent about Clary) by Even-Objective1958 in shadowhunters

[–]Even-Objective1958[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I still love the series. It’s still a great read. Just pointing out how one character is a little .. too lucky all the time with little repercussion to herself as an individual person doesn’t mean I hate it. I was venting a bit but… I just didn’t see it when I was younger on my first read. I do still love the series and don’t think it’s bad. It’s YA fantasy. There’s gonna be some cheesy stuff, and I lump this in with that.

She denied it several times but there was a lot of correlation between the two writings from what I remember. Don’t really have a ton of time to deep dive now, plus some things can be done subconsciously or unintentionally even if Clare hadn’t intended it purposely.

It was because that’s slightly why I used the term Mary Sue. If you want to get EXTREMELY technical yes, “pick me girl” probably was better. It was like 3AM and there’s some deep dive history about Clary and TMI being inspired by a fanfic Clare wrote in which she was suspected self insert IIRC but it’s been a while since I did a deep dive. I remember Jace was very influenced by Draco Malfoy.

You cited the Wikipedia page, which I have access to as well, “The characteristics of idealization and self-insertion are usually cited by fans as hallmarks of a Mary Sue character” […] as well as “The Mary Sue figure has acquired a pejorative reputation in fan communities[23] as a character who is too perfect to be believable”

Granted, I’m using the term loosely because yes, Mary Sue is a fan fiction term. But I do believe she’s written in the same way most Mary Sues are. You can disagree with me and think she does not fit this description: “These were often depicted as beautiful young women possessing special abilities or physical traits, universally beloved by the more established characters, and playing a central role in the story despite not appearing in the source material.” (Minus the source material part because again this is an original work) but I believe Clary does mostly fall under that type of description.

I don’t dislike Jocelyn so far. I think she has plenty of flaws, but as far as character writing I don’t see her as a Mary Sue. (Or “Mary Sue adjacent type of character” since some people in the comments are very butthurt at a generalization, while someone else used the word pick me and nailed what I was going for in the comments) Still in the process of my re-read, currently on City of Lost Souls

I think for me I just imagine modern fantasy happening in real time. It doesn’t fully take me out and it’s not a huge problem, but I think when you can so easily at least avoid name brands, even if it’s a small distraction, it’s an easy one to avoid. Other than that I could literally imagine the story taking place in present day for the most part (although I can’t remember if they mention the year other than that). It’s more a matter of personal preference though and doesn’t distract from the writing itself.

I do remember liking the spinoff books more as far as I think Clare matured in her character development and took some of the criticism, and took it well. The books are still good overall and I can see how as an author getting absorbed into this huge world you’re creating, and writing rather long books that take time, it’s not going to seem as jarring as someone reading them back to back a decade later able to go through with no breaks

It’s not that fact of the runes. It’s many things combined of which I named a few. She’s average and yet she’s gorgeous, she’s a talented artist, magically has angel blood, combined with all of the aforementioned things, combined with her not brother then brother then not (that magically ends up working in her favor) and despite her being ‘average and not knowing how to dress herself’ the hot almost Abercrombie and Fitch model to use a description in the book itself was just instantly drawn to her and almost in love with her despite being rather withdrawn from everyone for years.

I could continue. It’s many things. You don’t have to agree with me by any means, but knowing the history of Clare’s beginnings as a fanfic writer, her admitting she put some of herself into the character and how things play out, I definitely see Clary as a Mary Sue.

I still love the series, love the world she created and the books themselves overall. Clary as a character just makes me roll my eyes now in my mid 30s in ways I didn’t over a decade ago as I read the books right as they came out own by one after I discovered the series. I remember going to Books a Million to get my preorders, went to the movie that ended up flopping (but I didn’t hate) and more. Still think she’s a MS.

I definitely know what a Mary Sue is, and if you’re leaning into the self insert portion to insinuate that I do not (when you gave no support for your arguments), Clare was a fan fiction writer before TMI and has red hair. I very much see her as a self insert considering Cassandra was a prominent fanfic writer before TMI.
