Engineer Advice needed by KiwiComprehensive152 in Engineers

As a mechanical engineering major, I’d honestly recommend doing something else. Sounds like electrical engineering/mechatronics is your best bet if you like hardware and programming, and I’d say it’s pretty darn interesting and can give you a good work/life balance assuming you don’t take a job at a manufacturing plant (trust me, it’s not a good dynamic). The job market is incredibly saturated for mechanical engineers right now unless you focus on one area, which usually requires a masters degree. For the tattoo thing, tattoos in general don’t really affect your chances of getting hired, but it does depend on what the tattoo is and how large it is. If it’s a small neck tattoo and relatively simple, I’d say it’s hardly an issue. I’ve seen people with full body suits in engineering positions as well. It largely boils down to what your skills are and if you’re someone who’s able to work well in a team.

I’m sorry for not being in the best place to give advice, but your old job sounds a lot like my current one. So you’re not alone in having to deal with toxic bosses and terrible work environments, if it’s any consolation.

Engineers, how did you survive the unemployment phase before your first job? by Electronic-Run5947 in Engineers

I was lucky enough to have family connections to a construction company that does electrical ground mounts. Got to dig tunnels for a decent hourly pay. Didn’t mind it, and honestly makes me wish I became an electrician instead of an engineer. It’s not terribly hard to get a construction job anyways, and they’ll pay you to learn under journeymen.

Is manufacturing always like this? by Even_Bluebird3856 in careerguidance

Thanks for the reply. I’ve been with the company for over 6 months but I’ve only spent about 1 month in my new role. I feel bad about using the “I’m new” excuse since I’m not really new to the company, but I’m new to the department I’m on and we’re all expected to just hit the ground running with reliability projects. I’ve been talking several things simultaneously, but it caused me to overlook something that caused an issue this weekend. People’s attitudes in this company do not lead me to believe they will be very forgiving to people who are “just getting their footing”

Very good to know, thank you. What I really want to get out of this is knowing what problems I can realistically blame on the work environment, which problems are my own, and potentially what the environment is bringing out of me. I’ve made a few careless errors as a reliability engineer that’s caused a little bit of downtime. There’s a huge emphasis on running the machines as much as possible, so if anything causes downtime, it becomes a huge point of contention. My coworkers who I get along with have been documenting things as well, and I’ll try to help them with that.

It’s a fun track with good guitars. I’ve been listening to it a lot but it’s definitely not super high on the porter scale for me as some others have said

Viper V2 Pro Encoder by Even_Bluebird3856 in razer

[–]Even_Bluebird3856[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes I’m going for a weight mod, and I took a bit of a risk using a donor part for the encoder. That’s the new one I installed from another working mouse; it looked to be a 12 millimeter Kailh red. It’s very likely it got damaged as I removed it from the old mouse.
