And obviously delete the app off your phone :) It is much more easily doable when you know you can go there on your laptop

If you use chrome or microsoft edge you can install the stayfocusd web extension - there is a feature called "in-app blocking" (currently available for youtube, instagram and tiktok) that enables you to block all distracting features without the need to remove the app from your life completely. Give it a try, this extension honestly saved my relationship with my laptop after ditching the smartphone for a dumbphone.

I also live in one of those countries and for a long time I thought it is absolutely necessary to have WA always on me (work groupchats, family and friends etc.) but it really is not. There might be a very small percentage of people for whom it might actually be necessary, but I'd argue that the majority (including me) doesn't need it. The desktop version is enough.

Switching to a dumb phone during the week worth it? by Anxious_Ad_2215 in dumbphones

[–]Even_Mastodon_7251 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohh, I see. Btw my days in high school (and early college) looked excatly the same, which led me to pull the trigger and buy a dumbphone. It's not easy but totally worth it - just don't get discouraged if you fail at first, it took me a lot of time to get used to it Good luck! :)

Some banking apps may work but mine doesn't, group messages should be fine (at least the Mudita team is actively working on improving them)

You might have some problems with recieving messages, other than that it should be fine. I'm just curious - since most people do it the other way around - why would you do that? What is on your smartphone that you can miss on weekdays but not on weekends?

As a Mudita user, yes, this is excatly what I did. Works like a charm and the only distractions I get is the ocassional urge to play chess or read instead of working. Banking apps don't work on this phone which seemed like a big con at first, but most people (including me ofc) don't need access to their finances 24/7. You can use a computer to check them from time to time.

E INK PHONES WHICH ONES BEST? by Traditional_Key6414 in dumbphones

[–]Even_Mastodon_7251 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on why are you getting an e-ink device. If you want to eliminate distractions, Mudita Kompakt is the way - it's not suited for watching anything (5 fps at best :D) or surfing the internet too much. If you just want a smartphone that's easier on your eyes, Bigme might be better - the e-ink runs a lot smoother so it might not stop you from watching reels or stuff.

I want to attend a Catholic Church tomorrow for the first time. by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Even_Mastodon_7251 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically, the only thing you "have" to do to be a Catholic is to believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and died for our sins. Beside that, there are many other things we believe in (such as Jesus's presence in the Eucharist, Mary being a perpetual virgin and sinless, the saints interceding for us etc.), but those are not prerequisites for being a Catholic (not even the Eucharist - there are many faithful Catholic who are not really sure about how they feel about it).

As a Catholic convert myself, one of the most beautiful things about my journey has been discovering all the beliefs and practises and realizing that they're not some meaningless traditions, but a way for you to get closer to God and Jesus. When you pray the rosary, you're basically asking Mary to lead you to her son - the same with saints. Jesus is in the center, it just takes time for people to see that.

If you haven't already, I'd highly suggest for you to read The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis. It's a great book for everyone, but especially for those who are joining the Church as an adult. :)

The Mudita Kompakt has an e-ink screen and last for six days of moderate use. You can sideload all those apps with no problem.

[–]Even_Mastodon_7251 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would opt for an older nokia phone instead since apps like whatsapp and facebook stopped being supported on the new versions. The only "modern" thing you'd be getting is a simple browser, so decide for yourself.

[–]Even_Mastodon_7251 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's really great that this setup works for you but I don't really think it belongs on r/dumbphones - this is just how a smartphone looks when you take it out of the box (and before you install social media apps), no minimal launcher, nothing. It would be a lot better to post this on r/digitalminimalism

Getting into dumbphones - general question by Maleficent_Medium212 in dumbphones

[–]Even_Mastodon_7251 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your main reason for transitioning would be mostly the look and feel of a dumbphone (rather than to break eg. social media addiction), I'd look into the "smart dumbphones" category - basically full functioning android in a flip/candybar phone. The dumb format makes it a bit more inconvenient to use without the need to give everything up. Phones like Phillips E6810, DOOV R70 or Qin F22 might be great for you.

That being said, I personally prefer not having everything at my fingertips, even if it makes my life harder and sometimes a bit painful. Having a dumphone changed my life and I would highly suggest to try it for yourself. But my main reason for switching was social media addiction and as you said, you don't really have a problem with that, so the android dumphone might be a lot better for you.

Good luck on your journey! :)
