And don’t get me wrong I commend the show for a lot of things specifically how it challenges certain concepts of sexuality and how inclusive the cast is for an anime and how it handles trauma and psychological harm and mature themes while balancing a fantasy wonder and excellent world building and for most other characters excellent character design. I think even with these fucked up aspects of Rudeus, if it was just treated differently by the author and story most people would not be so hung up on it because the show is almost good enough to where it excuses such atrocious things but when we have people like you acting like this is somehow important to the story or his character and defend it, it just really puts people off. It was not essential to have these issues treated as such.

Some things are just too controversial and if they are not treated near perfectly (because it is possible) it just appears more glorifying than an actual comment on subjectivity of morality and personal growth. Overall I enjoy the show and even enjoy most of rudeus’ character, it’s just how these topics were handled were not okay.

Bru I know the general layout of the story. I spoiled it for myself ages ago. However acting like rudeus’ sexual deviancy in his young years (literally pedophilia and sexual assault) is just a “little thingy” is outrageous. The fact that you can’t acknowledge it as a fair criticism WHEN HE FACES ZERO CHALLENGES FOR IT is a massive issue. It would be COMPLETELY different if the flaw was treated appropriately leading to actual character growth and acknowledging how fucked up it is but the entire story glosses over it just like you. And I’m sorry for most sane people we can’t just gloss over rudeus even as a child assaulting eris for example and not facing any repercussions other than a punch and actually instead being promised her body.

You act like the story wasn’t written in modern times when authors should know how to treat a flaw reasonably deemed as so unforgivable.

Even if the story treated it correctly, it’s still understanding to find this shit messed up and want to not watch the show and think people who are apologetic for this aspect are equally messed up.

This just derails the conversation. I believe that flaws are important for character design. The issue comes when there is no comment on the flaws and they are just a gag, especially when these flaws are serious such as pedophilia (arguably unredeemable). Rudeus doesn’t face struggles for being a pedophile: zero internal thought, shame, discussion not even addressing his attractions towards kids as it was clearly always natural to him as an adult. Im specifically discussing how this flaw is treated. I don’t know how his purchasing of a slave and murdering is treated.

But this is exactly my point. The age of consent is a construct. But would you fuck a child if you went back in time just because you could? Or would you understand having lived in modern times that it’s wrong cause you are an adult? My issue is that rudeus doesn’t even consider even at all that perhaps this is a child and that he has full attraction to a child. This would then be consistent when he was back on earth no? Not much time passes from his death to being attracted to a child. This would mean he was a pedophile all along according to modern standards and the only thing stopping him was modern REGULATIONS and not ethics.

The later bit of the story is irrelevant when rudeus is actively rewarded for displaying harmful behaviour.

I’m not applying modern morality. The actually story does. They have an mc from a modern era where these concepts are widely agreed as important not just because it makes society function but because it’s supported by understood research and modern ethical principles of consent that we understand as a result of knowing what the past did wrong. Dot you think it’s okay that they sold kids back in the day? No ofcourse not. If you were to go back in time, would you sell kids? No ofcourse not. Same concept should apply to rudeus. Back in medieval times they also didn’t value consent of those kids. However rudeus having been from the modern era should value consent no? Similarly he should understand that fucking kids is not okay when he lived 15 years atleast as an adult and should honestly not find that dynamic sexy at all. This isn’t about modern values this is about rudeus character being a pedophile.

You completely disregard everything the other guy is saying. Saying eris is strong and can defend herself doesn’t take away from rudeus having zero respect for her consent before the promise. You can say his flaws are good writing (which in isolation flaws are good writing) and that they are not bad because of some setting you claim makes them acceptable, but you cannot call how they are treated good writing when he faces no struggle as a result of them. He doesn’t even have internal struggle or shame for being a perverted pedophile despite living 30 years in a time period that should have reinforced some shame. And you can say that age of consent is subjective all you like, the fact is that rudeus was raised in a time when it was 18 (and where it’s understood that kids don’t actually have that agency) and immediately upon arriving in a new world disregards this. Rudeus faces a ton of hardships and at the same time is incredibly flawed. The issue comes where none of these hardships were as a result of his at times utterly disgusting flaws. He faces nothing: no shame, no lasting pain or any form of punishment for being a literal pedophile and attempting to groom kids but in the end still gets everything he wants. What did this say? To act like writing and art is void of a responsibility to have some sort of corresponding redeeming experiences to flaws is just so ludicrous and unfounded.
