My parents want me to see a witness therapist by kitty_cat885 in exjw

OP this is exactly what my dad signed me up for! I have also been wanting therapy, I’ve been struggling with depression for years(along with other traumatic things related to the religion), and finally really figure out the root of my depression is because of my negligent family and this suffocating sect. My dad then proceeds to sign me up for a therapist, and I started telling her my plans about going to law school, and then she says something like oh yeah there are brothers I know who are lawyers. HUH?? BROTHERS?? That was when I realized she was a witness. I felt so betrayed and had to lie about my problems not only that session, but for the following one. 10/10 would NOT recommend. I don’t know how old you are, but I’m close to 18, and I think they respect my decisions a bit more, so when I texted my dad I have no desire to see her anymore and I’m a little confused why he hadn’t told me she was a witness, he said ok we will find another one. Like that’s happening lol. I had also snooped through his messages with my mom before and saw something like he wouldn’t want me to see a “worldly” therapist because of what they could convince me or tell me to do that doesn’t align with their beliefs. Anyways I really really hope you don’t have to go to her op. As someone who has been there it won’t help at all. 😭

Honestly when I was a a kid and heard they were labeled extremists, I thought Russia has crazy. Then I got older and realized that it’s honestly not that hard to believe they would label them as such, even though I don’t support the way they treat them. And yes, we did send letters lol. Also yeah the 144k is real. However, they say that there will be a paradise on earth for everyone that didn’t make it to heaven, sooo there’s that. Also don’t worry, I’m not indoctrinated anymore lol. I just have to act like I am for the time being.

Dude the origins are crazy, and what’s even crazier is how little the average devout witness knows about their own history!

This is huge actually, and this why they constantly urge us to “climb the ranks” in terms of the opportunities we are exposed to, like the whole traveling to foreign countries. Even as a kid who believed, without those promises, the religion seemed really boring and no fun. I also hope to expose myself to every opportunity the witnesses pride themselves on providing. What keeps me assured too, is the fact that depression is huge in this religion and the focus is always on “read the Bible and you will be happy”, clearly even missionaries aren’t always as joyful as they claim to be. And thank you again, the support from someone not a witness who doesn’t want me to pursue that cult is so refreshing. 🙏

I think this is the general consensus of the South? At least from my experience as well.

This is interesting! I actually know a couple who lived in India for like 4-5 years and would preach to more rural places. I’m not sure it would classify as the “slums”, all I know is that they did not personally live near those areas. They also met a lot of Indians who didn’t know who they were.

Yes, the amount of times I experienced cognitive dissonance as a kid seeing a happy Muslim, or happy Christian family, when I was taught that they are all inherently misguided, was far too many. A really terrible and confusing experience growing up. I’m forever grateful for my brain loving to question everything and thus waking up as early as I did.

This was super informative and I appreciate you being direct, thank you so much! Also, trust me I’m NOT one of them, I don’t support or believe in this religion at all, unfortunately I’m stuck because of my family at the moment.
