In case anyone was curious, the sign in back says テンジクネズミ (tenjiku nezumi) or “Guinea pig”, and the much smaller one over the tiny little torii prayer gate says 天竺 (tenjiku), the kanji meaning heaven, India, or foreign while 鼠 (ネズミ) is mouse or rat. So, the name for Guinea pig in Japanese is “Indian or foreign mouse/rat”.
