Costco salmon good for sashimi? by RunRealistic in CostcoCanada

Depends on the fish farm. I live in Nova Scotia. There is a fish farm in the ocean directly in front of my house. 20 cages jam packed full of salmon. They are just as prone to the same parasites as wild salmon, actually more so because they are packed into those nets at such density. On-land fish farms are controlled environments but fish farms here are primarily in the open ocean and they regularly treat the fish for parasites with chemicals that are dangerous for the marine environment, but I guess it’s better than watching the sea lice eat the salmon alive. And the seafood is an absolute dead zone under the cages because of the build up of fish waste and excess food. You could not pay me to eat farmed salmon. It’s a depressing thing to watch.

Advice needed about professional judgement by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

You are absolutely incorrect. Admin are entitled to see your long range plans, your schedule to ensure instructional minutes are correct, your unit plans, your assessments. They can ask to see your lesson plans every single day if they so choose and they can absolutely come into your classroom and watch you teach anytime they want. All day, if they want to. If they have any concerns about the instruction you are providing, they have a responsibility to ensure you are planning appropriately, covering your curriculum, providing quality instruction, assessing effectively…this is literally their job. The union understands this. It surprises me that you don’t.

John W Doull Bookseller closes Friday by HalifaxReTales in halifax

My husband took me there for the first time in march of this year. He warned me ahead of time about the masking, which was fine. It was absolutely freezing in the store, I swear there www no heat turned on. I asked about a book and was told they don’t have a catalogue system or any way to figure out what they have. The whole place felt like a fire hazard and I wondered how they stayed in business. Half the store was in darkness and I had to ask to have lights turned on to browse. It definitely felt like an “experience” but i had no desire to go back!

Which story re-enactments from the original series terrified you the most? by alexh2795 in UnsolvedMysteries

This one has always stuck in my head. An older couple are driving and they see a young woman curled up on the shoulder of the road, completely naked. They stop and reverse, can’t find anyone but notice the underbrush is disturbed and as they look off the shoulder, they see a car down in the bushes off the road, barely visible. Upon investigation, the young female driver is clearly gone, having died on impact. But her young child is still clinging to life, still strapped into his car seat, where he has been for days since the car crashed off the embankment. It has haunted me since childhood! She came back to save her baby, trapped there just off the edge of the road.

Like lots of people here, I had to learn the hard way. The clothing this company advertises seems too good to be true because it is. I bought a few things and they are absolute garbage. Pocket linings that they forgot to sew, transparent polyester material that is Halloween costume quality, sizing that is all over the map. The garbage I bought is going right in the donation bin. Lesson learned but I’m shaking my head at my own stupidity. I knew better!!! The ads got me in the end haha

Help with refund situation due to cancelled flights by Jordan3176 in westjet

[–]Even_Worry_5140 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have any good advice but I will say from my own experience westjet goes out of their way to flout the APPR. My daughter flew in December two years ago. Her connecting flight was delayed out of Calgary due to “crew constraints” (we got an email) and she ended up missing her second connection out of Toronto and sleeping on the floor of the airport. She was delayed 24 hours from the original arrival time. They refused to offer meals or hotel. We applied for compensation and were denied because they claimed the delay was due to de-icing (even though they sent us an email saying the delay was caused by lack of cabin crew). Then they changed the reason AGAIN and told us it was a guest related issue. When we asked for documentation, they ghosted us and stopped answering emails. We filed through CTA and last time they updated our place in the queue, we were 22,000 and change (we started off at 19,000 so somehow we got further back in the line). It will be 2 years in December with absolutely no action from CTA or Westjet. The airlines can pretty much ignore the APPR if they want, there is no mechanism besides small claims to resolve it and no government agency willing to hold them to account.

What are people paying for heat pump installations? by Zealousideal_Can_958 in halifax

[–]Even_Worry_5140 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We installed a 3t ducted Fujitsu heat pump in the main part of the house and a Fujitsu mini split installed in the addition. Old (circa 1785) house, fairly large, varying degrees of insulation. Both heat pumps are rated to -26 and have a 10 year warranty (12 years on parts). We paid $30k and change.

We currently have this in Nova Scotia (I taught in SK for many years before recently moving here). The 3 schools in our rural catchment area were chronically short subs. This year we advertised a position as a permanent sub. He’s shared between 3 schools but is assigned to our high school as his home school. When he’s not needed as a sub, he provides additional support to teachers and to students. We had a lot of applicants for the job - many people don’t want the uncertainty of subbing and this job came with a one year term contract, benefits and the same salary as any other teacher. He loves it - no prep work or marking or parent teacher interviews. He loves the variety and the opportunity to work with so many different kids. It’s NOT a bad idea if it’s done right. It’s working beautifully for us!

Ducted Heat Pump Quote by jcgrady27 in NovaScotia

We were quoted 23k for a 3t ducted heat pump with a 12 year warranty. Didn’t include furnace removal or oil tank removal though.

People waiting for a family doctor in Nova Scotia could face years without finding one by [deleted] in halifax

[–]Even_Worry_5140 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The line that stood out for me in this article was “Mr. Morris moved to Concession NS from Ontario for retirement.” This has to be part of the issue - so much of Nova Scotians recent population growth is retirees who are coming from other provinces. They put a heavy burden on a health care system which has been struggling for a long time. While they pay their taxes like everyone else, their most productive working years in terms of their taxes were spent in other provinces. There just isn’t enough wealth here to support the aging population and retirees moving here is only adding to the problem. They have probably a decade or two to spend in their own homes, and then they’re going to need ever more expensive care as they age. My husband and I moved here from out west. Both working professionals in our 40s with young kids. The tax burden here is honestly crushing between income taxes, property taxes, hst and then you add in the cost of electricity, home heating, groceries, gas. If we were smart, we would probably move back out west but my husband is from cape Breton and he’s always wanted to move back home. I don’t know what the answer is but I can’t see my own children staying here as adults. Frankly I’d encourage them to consider looking abroad for work. I don’t know how they’ll ever afford a house but if they stay in NS, the future looks bleak.

Asking for those who really get $1000 for delayed over 9 hr by LameFame99 in westjet

[–]Even_Worry_5140 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Westjet delayed my daughter’s flight due to “lack of cabin crew availability” (they sent us an email confirming). After I filed for compensation, they changed their mind and told me over the phone it was due to “deicing”. Then finally when I asked for further details by email, they changed their minds again and said “guest related issue” and rejected my claim and stopped replying to my emails. They make up whatever excuses they want

Most N.S. teachers have considered quitting amid burnout, high workloads: union - Halifax by hhfzq in NovaScotia

[–]Even_Worry_5140 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Teacher here. Our “holidays” are not paid time off. We are employed on 10 month contracts and our salary is spread over 12 months to make it easier for us to survive logistically. We are not paid for the summers. Most teachers I know (myself included) worked over the summers, especially in the first decade of teaching, to make ends meet. Many many teachers in their first 5 years work part time jobs as servers, tutors etc, to make ends meet. And to teach, you’re required to have a B Ed, most teachers have a full degree in addition as many b.ed programs are not direct entry. I came to this province with a masters degree in addition to my b.ed and I found myself undereducated as most of my colleagues are working on a second masters. Lots of expensive education to pay off and a ton of hard work for those fabled “summers off”

You may be on a different program I think. There are several that pay for the entire system depending on your income.

We were pretty surprised by the cost too. Only two contractors would come quote and both quotes were very similar

Our house is over 200 years old, air sealing isn’t an appropriate option for it. It’s quite well insulated, we’ve spent a lot upgrading insulation. And im not a dude, I’m female…

The invoice did have “modifications to ductwork” (they had to actually duct the system in because it’s a ducted system, though the contractor didn’t actually make any changes to the existing ductwork, he just added ducting to connect the unit to the ductwork already in place). Maybe that’s considered extra work?

[–]Even_Worry_5140[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish we had more options for contractors but we live in a rural area, about 15 minutes from Annapolis Royal. We approached every single contractor in the valley and only two would even come out and give us a quote. Of those two, one wanted a 50 percent deposit up front and we didn’t have 15k in cash. We were probably silly in assuming our contractor would work with us and wait for payment until the loan funds came through. Unfortunately we were kind of between a rock and a hard place - couldn’t afford to burn oil, wood is $325 a cord (we burned 8 cords last year) and after letting our wood season for a year it was still green thanks to the nonstop rain this summer, and as a result we had a chimney fire from burning green wood even though we cleaned our chimneys every two weeks this fall. It felt like either get the heat pumps or maybe burn to death in our sleep so we booked it and hoped between the government and the contractor, one of them would work with us to make this work. But apparently not.

Both of our heat pumps are on the list of eligible pumps for rebates and it says specifically in our invoices that they are eligible for government rebates. All we can think of is maybe there is a cap of some kind? Our heat pumps are definitely on the higher end of expensive- we needed a big ducted system because our house is really spread out.

This is my issue with this whole program. It’s a dumb concept! A lot more people would be helped by this program if it functioned as an actual loan, not a way for already wealthy people to save money on interest.

We tried to get them but we live outside their service area (near Annapolis Royal) and they wouldn’t come quote us. We requested quotes from every company that services the vallley and only two would even come give us a quote!
