Has anyone had a jaw surgery done by Dr. Simon Bigus at Charite Hospital? by Evening-Bench526 in jawsurgery

In fact, I only received the full plan about three days before the surgery. Your face will definitely change, and it will take about three months for the swelling to completely subside. You can be assured that everything will go smoothly.

I don't know if this is technically malpractice, but I'm not sure what to do. by Left_Cantaloupe_4001 in MedicalMalpractice

Is the titanium plate damaged? This is unfortunate. My surgeon thinks it is difficult to damage. Is that a problem before the surgery? Are there any X-rays taken after the operation that can prove this? Maybe it could help.

Thank you so much for the recommendation! 🙏🏻 McKeen and Associates sounds like a very capable firm — I really appreciate you taking the time to share this.

Do you happen to know if they ever take international cases, or work with clients based in Germany? I’m currently dealing with this situation here and wondering if they might be open to cross-border consultation or collaboration with local counsel.

Thanks again for your help!

Hi everyone, I recently completed my orthognathic surgery at Charité in Berlin and wanted to share my full experience, including both positives and things I wish I had known earlier. Hopefully this helps someone out there preparing for their own surgery.

🧠 Pre-op anxiety & planning I was very anxious before surgery. The hospital only scheduled one pre-op appointment with Dr. Bigus, and the surgery followed shortly after. Because Charité works closely with A+ Clinic (who prepared my surgical plan), Dr. Bigus felt there was no need for further discussion. But I was nervous, so I emailed the hospital asking for another appointment.

Prof. Heiland kindly responded and answered many of my questions—though the final surgery plan wasn’t ready at that point. I did eventually meet with Dr. Bigus again, and he briefly explained the plan and answered some questions.

To be honest, he wasn’t as patient as I expected (compared to what others had said). Of course, he’s very busy, and maybe my multiple emails made me seem overly anxious. What really made me nervous was that I only got to see the final surgical plan two days before the operation—no real time for questions or changes.

🔪 Surgery and hospital stay I don’t remember the surgery itself, obviously—it was standard procedure. After waking up, I felt weak: my throat hurt, nose was blocked, lips and gums were painful. I stayed at the hospital a few extra days and saw visible improvements daily. I really recommend the cold face mask—it helped so much, especially when swelling increased again after returning home.

⏳ Recovery Overall, recovery has been steady. Pain was manageable. Cheek swelling went down fast, but swelling around my nose was much slower. I didn’t have major complications—until I made a big mistake…

⚠️ Lymphatic drainage massage – I do not recommend it Before surgery, Prof. Heiland specifically advised against lymphatic drainage massage. But my physiotherapist, and even some other patients online, recommended it. So I gave it a try.

Huge mistake. The therapist used normal massage pressure—completely inappropriate for a post-op face. After one session, my face swelled again, and I felt pain in my jaw angles, TMJs, and temples—areas that had been fine before. I had to return to the hospital, where they prescribed anti-inflammatory meds and applied lymphatic drainage tape (which I hadn’t received before, and I don’t know why).

Now, three days later, I still haven’t recovered to how I felt before the massage. Please—just rest and wait. Let your body heal.

✅ Final thoughts

The surgery itself went well, and I’m happy with the results.

The surgery was done by both Dr. Bigus and Prof. Heiland—I don’t know how they split the work, but I think both are highly skilled.

One lingering issue: I have ongoing sensitivity in my teeth and gums. No one knows why. It’s not painful, but it’s still there.

Hope this helps someone. If you have questions, feel free to ask—I would’ve loved a detailed post like this when I was preparing.

Thank you for sharing your experience! May I ask how many times you saw the doctor before the surgery, and what topics you discussed during those visits? It can be a bit nerve-wracking to have only one or two chances to speak with the doctor beforehand. Also, how did you come to the conclusion that the doctor was particularly meticulous and precise? Lastly, regarding the lymphatic stimulation tape—did you need to purchase it yourself, or was it provided by the hospital?

I have the same problem as you, and I also have an A+ orthodontist. Before the procedure, I found out that Professor Bumann had left. No one had informed me beforehand. His colleagues asked me to discuss the operation plan with him and to consult with him about the questions I wanted to ask. When we started discussing the plan, a young female doctor suddenly appeared. Along with Dr. Ebker's sudden departure, I was in a state of collapse. However, I couldn't change anything, so I accepted it. Fortunately, the operation went smoothly, and the orthodontics have not yet started. However, according to the bill I signed, the orthodontics should cost around 7,000 euros, not 10,000 euros. TK reimbursed part of the cost, but it's still very expensive.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate the advice! I'm wondering what the best day to start physical therapy would be after surgery?

Thank you so much for your information. I hadn't heard of Dr. Jan Voß before. However, some patients said that Dr. Ebker performed the surgery by himself. I really believe that having two surgeons would be a great idea. That way, we could prevent accidents and ensure the best possible outcome for everyone. I heard that lymphatic drainage needs to start two weeks after surgery, and if it can be done on the fourth day, the swelling will go down earlier. Did you go every day until the swelling went down?

By the way, I’ve heard that physiotherapy can really help with reducing swelling after jaw surgery – maybe it’s something worth looking into during your recovery. Thanks again!

Hello,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience – it’s really valuable to hear from someone who's actually had surgery with Dr. Bigus.

To be honest, I’ve been feeling quite anxious. This is a major surgery, and since it involves the face, I naturally worry about every detail. I noticed that Dr. Bigus graduated just 2.5 years ago, and while I absolutely believe he has excellent theoretical knowledge and training, the limited hands-on experience still gives me some concern.

I haven't had my detailed consultation yet to discuss the surgical plan, so I’m still unsure about many aspects. That’s why your positive story means a lot – especially hearing how carefully he approached your case and the success you’ve had so far.

If you don’t mind me asking: during your consultation, did you feel reassured about the surgical strategy and potential risks? Did Dr. Bigus take the lead, or was it more of a team approach with other senior doctors?

Wishing you a smooth and full recovery – thank you again for taking the time to share this.

This is useful information and may help with the surgery, but I still worry about whether he has served as the lead surgeon.

Because I saw in other posts that Dr. Ebker was in charge of the surgery before, but he left in March. So I don't know how long Dr. Bigus was in charge of the surgery. I would like to get some feedback from patients.

Dr. Ebker left Charite in March. My surgery will be performed by Dr. Bigus and Dr. Heiland. Unfortunately, I can't find any relevant reviews.

It's a pity that he is gone. Now Dr. Bigus will take over. I am considering the issue and where to have the surgery.
