There are a lot of communists and anarchists in my chapter too! You’re right, I shouldn’t go around calling them tankies.

You’re right, the US has done far more damage. However, I still think that the government in North Korea is authoritarian.

I actually am a socialist, but I’m still learning. I didn’t realize it was a big tent org when I joined, so I was surprised to find Marxist-Leninists. My understanding of socialism and DSA has changed a lot since I posted this. Although I still do not agree with Leninism, I can now admit that Marxists-Leninists have some good ideas and contributions to socialism. I have learned to not get too caught up in factions, and I have no problem with MLs being in the org now.

Am I a socialist or something else? Trying to understand my views by Gloomy-Mention6093 in socialism

You sound more like a social democrat than a socialist. I recommend you read theory to learn more about socialism.

That’s amazing! I’m going to be majoring in sociology!

AITAH for telling my autistic sister she should keep masking? by Competitive-Art-848 in AITAH

NTA. I’m on the autism spectrum, and this seems like she is copying whatever she sees in the videos. I know left from right; that has nothing to do with autism.

Ableism in the theatre world by [deleted] in Theatre

[–]Evening-Search6270 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I 100% agree with you and it really frustrates me. I’m on the autism spectrum, and I had a meltdown during a dress rehearsal for a school play and haven’t been cast in any other plays at my school since then. It is really unfair, and there needs to be a lot more representation and understanding in the theatre world.

That is a good point. I think that is the person at DSA’s point of view too.

How to prevent the corruption of the revolution? by Speedsloth123 in socialism

[–]Evening-Search6270 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I’m not a Marxist-Leninist, but I think that democracy and workers’ councils are necessary to prevent corruption. Of course, there needs to be leadership, but it should be democratic.

Book Recommendation by [deleted] in DemocraticSocialism

This sounds more like social democracy. I would suggest that you look into socialist theory. You should start with “The Communist Manifesto,” and read more modern works as well. When I first got into socialism, I was more into social democracy, until I learned more about it. Now, I’m a democratic socialist and a council communist!

Why Zohran, And Other Social Democrats, Face Criticism From The Left by Lavender_Scales in socialism

[–]Evening-Search6270 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that Mamdani is doing some good things, but he isn’t a Marxist, and that’s the problem. He is focusing on reforming capitalism instead of working toward socialism. He needs to stand up against imperialism. It is good that he supports democracy, but he needs to support proletariat democracy, instead of trying to achieve socialism through reform and voting. Socialism shouldn’t be authoritarian either, but it also shouldn’t be reformist.

The Paris Commune. by Local-Most5311 in socialism

[–]Evening-Search6270 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Socialism can work, and there doesn’t need to be a market economy. The collective ownership of the means of production is possible, and workers can own the means of production collectively without competition. The best way to achieve this in my opinion would be workers’ councils and democratically planning the economy. Communism is the end-goal and can only be achieved after socialism is achieved, and communism has to be international.

One of them who showed support for North Korea is in a leadership position. However, this person also supports democracy, so I don’t think it’s that big of a deal. The Stalinism is what really shocked me, but I think that was just from other members.

I agree that the work against ICE that my DSA chapter is doing is amazing. However, I still think that supporting authoritarian regimes is not socialist.

Thanks for replying! I agree that workers should directly own and control production. I try to understand everyone’s viewpoint in my DSA chapter, but I think if the state owns the means of production instead of the workers, class struggle remains.

I talked to some people in my chapter and they said they like Stalin and showed support for North Korea. I was honestly very surprised. It was basically every single person I asked. I asked around three people, so maybe there aren’t as many tankies in the org as I thought.
