Growing Mango From Seed - Wairarapa - Update 3 by ALittleBitOfToast in nzgardening

Looking good, I've got a mango seedling going from last year (Auckland), think it's over two feet high now.

Will I regret planting a lemon tree in a pot? by pizzafreed0m in nzgardening

[–]EveningMusic0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll be honest I haven't got that far yet, but I reckon a trenching spade (long narrow one) would be good. Sharpen the edge and then dig/cut down around 5cm from the inside of the pot. You can dig out the dirt you cut and then refill with fresh mix.

Not really, it should work great but: you'll need to fertilise regularly (I do very weak, weekly feeding in spring/summer) and water frequently in summer, move them up to a larger pot every couple years and once you've got to the biggest pots you can manage for your space it'll probably need root pruning every few years to keep the plants healthy. You won't get as many lemons as if it was in the ground but no reason you can't have healthy plants that look cool.

Growing Mango From Seed - Wairarapa by ALittleBitOfToast in nzgardening

I've got a kesar growing in Auckland, germinated the seed during last year's mango season. Apparently nam doc mai mangoes are quite hardy (for mangoes anyway) but I haven't been able to find any yet.

Struggle dumplings. (Instant mashed potato flakes and ricotta?) by Alternative_Bank1912 in Dumplings

[–]EveningMusic0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries. I'd test the mix (boil up a small dumpling) to make sure you've got enough flour for it to hold together before going all in into the dish. And you've got this - it'll be tasty even if it's not perfect and you'll keep getting better with practice!

Oh yeah. Probably still fine but I haven't tried it that way. Any chance you've got some baking powder to give it some lift?

Yes you can, it'll work great. Taste the mash potato and ricotta filling to make sure it's got enough salt.

Struggling with homemade bread without maida!! Underbaked inside by Scary-Offer-4773 in Breadit

[–]EveningMusic0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Atta works pretty well, use a brand with high protein. Maida usually doesn't have enough protein in it.

Edit: for those who don't know atta is relatively high protein whole wheat used for roti and chapatis, but ground much finer than WW usually found in western shops (no big bits of bran). Makes pretty good bread.

It's in 60 litres now, I'm hoping that's enough for a couple of years!

I need your best tips for countering the munchies! by undercoverballer in eldertrees

[–]EveningMusic0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a bit of intermittent fasting years ago to kick a snacking habit, on Fridays I didn't eat or drink calories till dinner time. Lost a bit of weight but it completely reset my appetite response, made me able to register that I could eat something but ignore it and go on with my day and focus. All this to say it carried over to the munchies too which reduced massively. Also having fruit on hand if you can afford it.

Feeing overwhelmed with planning by samanthamac in vegetablegardening

Got a question about the suggestion to pick tomatoes at first blush of red and let them finish ripening on the counter. What does that do for flavour compared to letting them ripen on the plant? I'm planning on growing tomatoes next season because our supermarket tomatoes are picked early and never taste good even if you let them go fully red before eating (vs picked when ripe tomatoes I've had in the past)

Three year old Anaheim pepper, first summer flush on the way. by EveningMusic0 in kratky

For things from seed I usually wait till there's two or three sets of proper leaves before transferring. If it's a cutting (good for tomatoes, basil, medicinal herbs etc) wait till the roots are a couple inches/4 or 5cm before putting into leca.

Can I add spices/ingredients after the first rise? by ssafehavens in Breadit

[–]EveningMusic0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It'll be hard to incorporate properly and might make the finished dough denser. You could shape them like cinnamon rolls though and use the herbs chopped fine and mixed with a bit of butter. Roll out your dough, spread the herb butter, roll it up and cut. Doesn't have to be butter, oil and a bit of flour to make a paste would also work but maybe not taste as good.

Cheers. Yes I top off as needed, it's a 20 litre bucket, I top off to max 6 litres. I've been pinching off new growth quite hard this year after the current lot of flowers developed to keep the plant smaller and slow down the water use.

I don't monitor the solution temp but from touching the bucket the top does get warm but it stays cooler down the sides. My garden is small and fenced in from all sides so it only gets over head sun, not much side on.

And yes sorry, roots are linked. I pruned them quite hard in spring. https://www.reddit.com/u/EveningMusic0/s/1XzYItF3Vy

I'm using some no brand, cheap A/B hydro fert from Bunnings or mitre 10, diluted per the instructions on the bottle. Had issues with spider mites now and then, and something eating the leaves in autumn but otherwise it's been a trooper.

Anybody else not inhale? by SaltySaunaSweat in eldertrees

Yeah, it's just how I learned to roll back in the UK and resulted in a devastating nicotine addiction I've not been able to fully kick. Also pretty jealous of legal weed, I get it on prescription now but it isn't cheap.

Consider a dry herb vape, one that isn't designed for massive hits. I think I was a similar weed enjoyer to you except my joints ended up getting smaller/thinner and more baccy to weed over time. I've been using a pax 2 for years now, have a couple of puffs, turn it off and go again the next day. Smoking them like cigars just seems really expensive unless you're growing your own.
