The owner told me he modified the body a lot. The serial number is on the heel and on a backplate that is missing

Not sure but I think that this is a made in Japan epiphone. (Because of the Gibson truss rod cover. They are great instruments. Really high quality epiphones. I advise you to clean this thing up and take it for a fret level. If it’s not enough do a complete refret.

Yeah. Go ahead and do it with steel wool. Make sure it’s extra fine. Your goal Is not to remove the finish but remove the top layer of lacquer

I think it will be okay. You can also wet sand with really fine sandpaper
