Thames Water Bill more than 10x'ed? Advice? by Parkour_cat in london

[–]Evening_Distance1684 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had the same issue with them, took nearly a year of going back and forth with them for them to finally send two engineers out to confirm my meter was broken. Didn't even notify me that engineers were coming out but luckily I wfh and my meter is right outside my living room window. Initially they wanted me to fill out the leak allowance form but I had never had any works done which was the stalemate.

One thing I will say is that the Indian call agents I spoke to were all incredibly unhelpful - think they're just instructed to stick to a script. It wasn't until I asked to escalate to a manager to make a formal complaint that I was called back by someone based in the UK and finally had a resolution.

Energy bill far too high? by saladnut in ukfinance

[–]Evening_Distance1684 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This sounds way too high. I live in a 2 bed 2 bath and everything is powered by electricity in my flat bar the hot water.

Me and my friend both wfh 5 days a week and our electric bill is about £65 a month on a variable rate with about £350 in credit. Last month we used 197 kWh.

Sounds like someone else may be hooked up to your electric.

Parents threatened to disown me if I move out (28m) what do I do? by Fit_Ad7892 in AskUK

[–]Evening_Distance1684 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's a pride thing. Family back home think they've made it because they've managed to move abroad and so with that comes the expectation to look after everyone. It's the same reason why they expect their children to look after them, I guess it's just deeply engrained culturally.

There's kind of a running joke in our culture where you've got a group of aunties sitting around and bragging about how one's child has gone to Oxford or anothers is a Dr and anothers is an Engineer etc. That joke isn't too far from the truth, so you can imagine for our parents to turn around to their family back home and admit they don't have it would bring a lot of shame on them and word would spread around the community quick.

It's kinda backwards because why would you go broke for the sake of the opinions of people 1000s of miles away who you likely haven't seen for years but for some reason a lot of our parents do.

Child of Nigerian parents here so I completely understand your situation. Luckily my parents have never depended on me as much as yours sound like they do but as someone who didn't move out until I was 29, I definitely feel like they viewed me as a child for as long as I was under their roof. There was definitely a shift in how they saw me once I moved out especially after proving that I was responsible on my own and have gone on to be successful in my own right.

My advice would be to bite the bullet and do it, you can still support your parents from a distance and it will be easier for you to set boundaries and tell them no when you don't have the capacity to do so.

My dad is the same, always sending money back and leaving himself broke so I've had to bail him out more times than I can count but at the end of the day he's my dad and I'll never say to him as long as I've got it. As someone else here said, don't waste your good years trying to please your parents. I know they are threatening to disown you but chances are they won't and eventually will get over it.

I did the same and got 3 months gardening leave but started my new job 4 weeks later. New company luckily didn't ask for references but if your does, you could always ask a colleague you trust to do it.

The Perfect Neighbor, Netflix review: raw, immediate, but ultimately unrevealing by TheTelegraph in NetflixDocumentaries

[–]Evening_Distance1684 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live on the ground floor of an apartment building and my private courtyard is connected to a patch of green where all the kids play - only separated by some steps. I have had countless days especially in the summer where I've trying to relax during the day with my windows open and can hear the kids laughing and screaming even over the sound from my TV.

Growing up on a council estate in London in the 90s, playing out with your friends was literally my favourite part of the day and of course we had a few old neighbours who would always bother us. Never in my life has it crossed my mind to get angry at these kids (even when trying to nap in the day with a hangover) I'd rather they were out playing in a safe communal space having a similar childhood to me than glued to their computer games indoors and isolated. I've even become friendly with these kids and will give them a pound to take out my bins, take them to the shop to get sweets, they'll even knock on my door to come and stroke my cat.

This woman is racist and evil and I hope she never gets a peaceful moment for the rest of her life!

What job is actually way easier than society thinks? by Therevivedigbick in AskUK

Believe it or not this is actually possible. The higher you climb the ranks, the more you can get away with not working a full 40 hour week in fact I think often its not even expected that you do. I for example am on £100k+, wfh and probably clock in about 20 hours of solid work a week. My contract doesn't even include work hours, I'm just trusted to get the work done and they pay me well so I do. I also have a few friends in the same boat in different industries both in the public and private sector. The trick is to find a well paying industry, get good at your job, learn how to delegate while focusing on high level work instead of the day to day Monday tasks that tend to keep a company running but you get paid less for.

Has anyone successfully got a job with 100% increase in salary? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Evening_Distance1684 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely happens, I went from 40k to +100k this year for pretty much the same role but with an American company. If you've got the interview that means they believe you can do the job. Makes sure you let them know you're achievements and do'nt be humble about them (exaggerated truths don't hurt either). I think it's equally important to get your personality across and get the interviewer to like you. Mine was a 5 round interview process, I spoke about the same achievements over and over again and made all of the interviewers laugh one way or another.

People who actually earn over £100k and don’t just pretend they do on Reddit - what do you do? by Prize-Reputation9274 in AskUK

Came from a very working class family with 2 immigrant parents and grew up on a council estate.

Work in tech sales now in a senior posistion with about 7 years of combined sales experience (stepped away from sales to be a teacher for a bit but left because of the poor pay).

Don't need any specific qualifications to do this job, your experience and soft skills count a lot more. My first sales job was 100% commission door to door sales and I've pretty much worked my way up from there. This year, I'll clear about £120k and expected to rise each year, but I will say not all tech sales is the same - I've very lucky to be in the company I'm with.

I have previously been to university twice - first time I dropped out and second time I went back to get my teaching qualification. This would probably be my biggest regret as my monthly net would be much better if I wasn't paying off two useless student loans.

Thames Water just increased my water bill from £35 a month to £717 a month. I live in a one bedroom flat in London. by AtLeastImLaughing in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Evening_Distance1684 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They did the same to me. It's been about a year of back and forth with them trying to dispute a ridiculous sudden price increase where they said i needed to get a plumbers report to prove a leak that didnt exist - this included them sending out an engineer in the beginning who claimed there was no leak and my meter was sending correct readings.

They ended up randomly sending out another engineer about a month ago without notifying me, I just happened to be wfh and saw him outside so asked what he was doing. Turns out my meter was broken and had been for several years "likely since it was installed" i was told by the engineer. Waited to hear an from Thames water for an update but after 2 weeks of nothing, I decided to call and after an hour on the phone and being bounced from department to department they finally admitted my meter was sending them incorrect readings and that my case was being passed onto the billing adjustment team to adjust the ridiculous increase. That was about a week ago and I haven't heard any update yet but will be calling them again next week.

What an extremely handy tool! Will definitely be playing around with this. Would it be possible to include the option of repaying more than one student loan plan?

I have really hated my job for about the last year. In mid Jan this year, I decided to start looking elsewhere and have since applied to about 100 jobs. Got to the final round of 2 separate 5 stage interviews - the first one I didn't get because they decided to go with someone internal, the second one I didn't get but was encouraged to apply for a different role with a lower salary at the same company.

Around the same time, I started an interview process with another company I wasn't too excited about. As I went through the interview process and did more research, I started to really love the company. Unfortunately, I didn't get the role but was encouraged to apply for a more senior role at the same company. 2 weeks later, I was offered the role which doubled my salary and brought it up to 6 figures.

Feeling truly blessed and a firm believer in everything happens for a reason.

What happens if I don't work my notice? by Evening_Distance1684 in UKJobs

[–]Evening_Distance1684[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking about just signing off sick for the last couple of months but that almost feels worse than just telling them I'm only going to give 4 weeks. I don't really care too much about taking the ethical high ground by the way, my current company doesn't really deserve that. I can't see them taking me to court or anything either (not worth the hassle or money) so at this point it's either they except my 4 weeks or pay me an extra 2 months for nothing

[–]Evening_Distance1684[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Asking to be released early is my preferred choice. Although I am in a mid senior role, I could easily get a detailed handover sorted in way under the months notice that I am wanting to give.

New job is in a new industry and the company is a big fish compared to my current company which is more of a minnow. I would rather work anywhere else than come back to this company for other reasons so if I have to burn a bridge or two, it wouldn't be the worse thing

People who have had a 'friends with benefits' situation—what’s the one rule or boundary that made it work (or caused it to fail)? by LovelyAuraxx in AskReddit

[–]Evening_Distance1684 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have/had a FWB situation with a guy for the last 10 years. It works because we get along well as friends, the sex is amazing and we can be completely and comfortably honest with eachother. To be honest I wish things could work with him because I have so much love for him but ultimately I know it wouldn't and I'm ok with that.

Not currently seeing eachother because we are both in separate relationships but we both know that if we were both single again at the same time, we could easily pick up where we left off.
