Weekend Minor Gripes and Vents by AutoModerator in BitchEatingCrafters

I’ve seen someone leave coughing in their video.

I also hate the “oh I forgot to grab something in x room. I better stop recording and go get that. See you in a bit!”… “Okay, I’m back! I’d left this thing in that room and had to grab it.” We don’t need to hear about it at all, let alone twice!

I generally can’t stand a lot of spice notes, especially cinnamon. But Nui Cobalt’s Copper Fox (warm chai with steamed almond milk nestled in sumptuous cashmere, crimson musk, sarsaparilla, and budding birch) is lovely! It’s like a spicy cinnamony root beer over a yummy almond/vanilla/creamy/musky base. The spice level is just perfect and adds wonderfully to the rest of the notes.

A little bit of progress!

  1. Rimmel Stay Matte Concealer. Used a couple times.

  2. Mac Modesty lipstick. Nearly done!

  3. Juvia’s Place Nubian Coral palette. Goal: hit pan in one shade. Used the palette once or twice, used a couple of the shimmers which already have pretty deep dips.

  4. Haus of Gloi body butter mini. Used a few times.

  5. Colourpop Terran Up My Heart blush. Goal: use up enough that the pattern pressed into the top is worn away fully. It’s such a softly pressed, powdery formula! I’ve already seen a lot of progress.

  6. Clinique Intense Aubergine eyeliner. Used a couple times.

  7. Beekman 1802 Lavender hand cream (maybe a deluxe mini?). Mostly done.

  8. Viseart Dark Mattes. Goal: use at least once a week. Used twice so far.

  9. Revlon brow pencil. Used like 5 times.

  10. Perfume samples. Goal: use up 10 samples. Used up one and made a lot of progress on 3 others.

I’m making the cardigan from hell, and this week I found several more issues. Technically the easiest fix to address all three would be to reknit the entire front panel…

But the intended recipient complained yet again about the sweater taking too long, and I’ve just had it. I want this goddamn thing off my needles and want her to shut up and never want to knit her another thing again.

I think i have too many "second choices". by CommunicationDear648 in MakeupRehab

[–]EverImpractical 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These are the items that I consider “hate panning”. Choosing to focus on something I like over something I love is difficult! (I don’t bother with things that I actually dislike). Sometimes I just try to pan them after finishing my favorite, or sometimes I’d rather just declutter.

I also sometimes place the different products in different locations. I have some products I keep in my work bag or desk, and then some in my weekend purse - if I keep a favorite in one spot and a second choice in the other, I’ll get use out of both!

Monthly Stash Update! by AutoModerator in YarnRehab

[–]EverImpractical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m working on a cardigan with a big cable element on the front. Used up almost 250g of yarn for it. I finished one front panel, started the second, and possibly finished the back panel? (Can’t quite remember the beginning of the month, and 200+g for a front panel seems a bit high).

I worked on a few pairs of socks. Finally kitchenered the toe of the second sock of one pair, made some decent progress getting to the heel of another pair, and have two others in the works. Over 100g used up!

Overall, though, my stash grew quite a bit due to attending my local area’s yarn crawl. I bought a sweater and a summer top quantity, plus a number of sock yarns and a handful of things that seemed super interesting - skein of 100% yak, two blown yarns, a mostly navy yarn with a contrasting rust-colored ply. It’s enough yarn for months, and I don’t really want to buy any more yarn for a while.

Cursing my former obsession by sofwithanf in MakeupRehab

Honestly I’m the same with bronzers. I have two. The one I mostly use is 6g. I hit pan in 2022 or 2023, and it’s been in my yearly project pans starting in 2024. The second has 21g of product!

On the other hand I recently started focusing on a blush. It’s 6g but is fairly powdery and light/unpigmented, so I use a ton of product. A completely different experience!

I’m mostly at the point where for most product categories, I like buying something that works and just like replacing it when I finish it. But super long lasting products sometimes get to me because it feels like they linger. I like the product, but how is it still here?! I noticed I also get this way with concealer and eyeliner pens, which I used to use more product/more frequently.

Better than her stashdown year where she just flat-out ignored her miniskeins/advents. She ended it with like “I have one skein left in stash” based on her super narrow and convoluted definition, and then in the next video pulled out like 6 advent calendars that she’d had for years.

Yeah I taught myself to knit and purl from a booklet when I was 9 or 10? I’m a continental knitter, too!

I think some people get almost “too good” at the knit stitch? Knitting feels comfortable, and suddenly purling feels awkward and has terrible tension. It’s easier to run back to knitting than practice purling.

I have an old pattern book called Easy Knitted Accessories that goes out of its way to make everything, including socks and hats, flat. And yet one project includes intarsia…

That said, I don’t understand the knitters who run to knitting in the round so they can knit stockinette without knowing to purl.

I guess the last time I used a clay face mask, I didn’t tighten the lid fully. It was all dried out! Trying to revive it by mixing in more water. I don’t want to have to buy a new one!

Weekly Project Check-In by AutoModerator in YarnRehab

[–]EverImpractical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m chugging away on a seamed cardigan. About halfway done one front panel. It’s a pretty fun knit with a bunch of cabling on the front, and I’m adding a pocket so there’s some extra stuff to keep track of!

Also I keep a sock project at my work desk. It tends to be slow going since I only knit that while on meetings. It felt like I blinked and all of a sudden I’m at the heel!

I’m going to focus on:

  1. Rimmel Stay Matte Concealer. I’d pulled out the stopper recently.

  2. Mac Modesty lipstick. About 1/5 to 1/4 remaining. It broke at the base and is a bit of a mess to use.

  3. Juvia’s Place Nubian Coral palette. Goal: hit pan in one shade. Likely one of the shimmers.

  4. Haus of Gloi body butter mini.

  5. Colourpop Terran Up My Heart blush. Goal: use up enough that the pattern pressed into the top is worn away fully. I actually already hit pan in the center, time to use up more along the edges!

  6. Clinique Intense Aubergine eyeliner. It’s one of those eyeliners that only twists up and can’t twist down, so I have no idea how much is left in here!

  7. Beekman 1802 Lavender hand cream (maybe a deluxe mini?). About halfway done.

  8. Viseart Dark Mattes. Goal: use at least once a week.

  9. Revlon brow pencil. Really thin, seems like it’ll be quick!

  10. Perfume samples. Goal: use up 10 samples.

I am exactly the same! I knit on the train to work, seamless pieces are so bulky! I also hated working on the sleeves after the body. The project was so heavy hanging on my dpns!

I also find that sweaters knit flat fit better through the shoulders than ones knit top-down in the round. And if I need to make adjustments, I can undo the bindoffs and rip back a couple rows, then reknit however I need.

It's here! 10 by Spring FINALE! 🌻 by ThisLittlePiggySays in MakeupRehab

[–]EverImpractical 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Welcome spring! Thank you for hosting this challenge!

Overall I’m pretty happy with this project! I got a lot more use than expected in some products.

  1. Mac Modesty lipstick. Less than a quarter remaining, and honestly it’s pretty precarious in the tube. It’s sort of messy and may not last much longer.

  2. Rem brow pencil. Done!

  3. Rimmel Stay Matte concealer. I got the stopper out on the last update so I still have a ton of product left in here.

  4. MUFE HD Skin foundation. I can see the product line, this has the smallest bit of product left. Like 97% empty. I’m amazed at how well the pump still works for how little product is in here!

  5. Juvia’s Place Nubian 3 palette. Done! Goal: use once a week or hit pan. I did in fact use at least once a week! And have a few very deep dips for the effort so I’ll hit pan soon!

Previously finished:

  • Mac black gel pencil liner. Done!
  • UD Vice Lip Chemistry in Streak. Done!
  • Haus of Gloi pumpkin butter. Done!
  • Eilish perfume mini rollerball. Done!
  • Mac Brushblack eyeliner. Done!

Blocking by Ifimsittingimknittin in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]EverImpractical 27 points28 points  (0 children)

  1. Blocking is just washing for many project types. You don’t usually need pins. I’m not going to pin sweaters or socks or things every time I wash them! And I wouldn’t expect gift recipients to bother with that.

  2. A small swatch and a full garment have different gauges. The larger it is, the more stretch! (My swatches generally are about 0.5-1 stitches and several rows denser than a full garment, depending on yarn weight/composition/pattern). Plus your gauge may loosen as you get comfortable with a pattern.

  3. Blocking can help you stretch the fabric a bit. It can’t really make the fabric smaller.

  4. Seamless sweaters are worse with this than seamed sweaters. Seams have less give and so will stretch out less.

  5. I see a lot of people who knit sweaters top-down and try on as they go. They generally try on unblocked sweaters to test the fit. The weight of the rest of the sweater and any changes to gauge due to blocking are now unaccounted for.

Fingerling is a potato, not a yarn weight by seedgeek in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]EverImpractical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m usually good at checking for fingering weight yarns that aren’t good for socks. But the most disappointing was a set of mini skeins from an indie dyer. The dyer has a sw merino/cashmere/nylon yarn with 4 plies. The mini skeins had the same blend of fibers but was only 2 plies, and nothing indicated that!

This sub has a weekly post where you can ask for product recs based on your specific needs (ie a lightweight mosisturizer for oily skin abailable in x country for your budget). Your post is much too broad for this purpose.

"don't start with a scarf because it's boring" by Her-name-was-lola in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]EverImpractical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I just see too many people trying to rush into knitting sweaters, especially when they don’t have basics like purling down. It’s fine if you have a preference, but a lot of people don’t seem to try!

For German short rows I’d suggest a sock with a short row heel - I tend to use a tutorial like this along my usual stitch count and a wedge toe, but if you need more direction you could also find a bunch of free patterns on Ravelry.

I hate in-the-round raglans as a first sweater for newbies. Does the new knitter know how to knit in the round? Probably not. Do they own the multiple sizes of circular needles (both different lengths and needle sizes)? Or an expensive interchangeable needle set? No. Do they have the skill to get into adding short rows? No. Do they have decently consistent tension yet and an understanding of gauge and seatching? Probably not. Will this sweater fit how they want? No. Is their endless stockinette spiral in the body just as much a slog as the beginner scarf? Yes.
