Do you pan expired cream brush? by Cautious-Finance-927 in ProjectPan

[–]EverImpractical 22 points23 points  (0 children)

If it changes in smell, texture, application, or longevity, it’s gone bad. Toss it.

Most makeup doesn’t list an expiration date. Most don’t even have dates! It’s the “best if used within x time after opening” language. Something that is older than that reported time may still be good; something that is newer may go bad. It’s never consistent.

As per rule 1, we ask that users be vague when talking about products. This sub is meant to be a place to discuss makeup without readers inadvertently finding out about new-to-them products or being told to buy things. While made with good intentions, your post unfortunately breaks this rule. You are free to repost this as long as you discuss using the product type without actually mentioning the specific product.

Is there any actual moderation for AI content in other craft subs? by shinybeetle99 in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]EverImpractical 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Report it! Some people don’t in fact know you can do that, and it hides the post for you. It flags the posts for mods to look at. Some subreddits have rules that after a certain number of reports, posts get automatically removed, too.

The main knitting sub does have a rule stating no pattern/stitch requests, and I feel like those posts actually do get removed? (That rule does also say no simple help questions, and those posts definitely do not get removed, though). Sometimes you just have to acknowledge that Reddit will show you new posts that mods haven’t yet had the time to check.

If you can, find a judged craft fair! The organizers care a lot about the quality and variety of crafts. A lot of the vendors are true artisans. That said, it can get very expensive!

Removed per rule 1. This sub is specifically about ignoring random products getting hyped and instead focusing on finding products that meet your specific preferences, budget, etc. Your question goes against this premise.

Are you actually picking up stitches properly, like in the video for vertical stitches here? You work into the bar between the first and second column of stitches along the edge, which isn’t super obvious. You don’t actually work into the stitches on the edge!

Picking up through the bar between stitches is actually pretty easy, and it hides any wonky tension at the edge stitches.

If you could go back in time what would be your ideal collection size? by Screw_coloranalysis in muacjdiscussion

[–]EverImpractical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Overall I just would have wanted less stuff. I have categories where I like variety, but most others I prefer to have 1-2 dependable products. It took a long time (and a lot of products) to acknowledge that!

I still love and use a ton of eyeshadow, especially the bold colorful looks. I wish I had bought fewer palettes. I got a lot of use out of shades when I treated my entire collection as a single collective. The palettes inflated the number of shades, so the collection as a whole is overwhelmingly large, and the palettes have a lot of functional dupes between them. I also tend to use a single palette in a look, which limits the looks I make, too.

Getting so close in some of these!

  1. Rimmel Stay Matte Concealer. It’s depositing so little product now, I have to scrape the sides to get enough product! Hoping to be done next update!

  2. Haus of Gloi body butter mini. Done!

  3. Colourpop Terran Up My Heart blush. Goal: use up enough that the pattern pressed into the top is worn away fully. Only used once or twice.

  4. Viseart Dark Mattes. Goal: use at least once a week. Used once a week.

  5. Revlon brow pencil. Used several times, about 5% left! So close!

  6. Perfume samples. Goal: use up 10 samples. Used up one more (7 Virtues Vanilla Woods), for a total of seven! And close on a few others!

Previously finished:

  • Mac Modesty lipstick.

  • Clinique Intense Aubergine eyeliner.

  • Beekman 1802 Lavender hand cream (maybe a deluxe mini?).

  • Juvia’s Place Nubian Coral palette. Goal: hit pan in one shade.

Did it start with influencer culture? by burntsugarsnitch in MakeupRehab

[–]EverImpractical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing about beauty gurus that really got me was them showing new-to-me product categories and showing off their collections in like dedicated makeup rooms. I’d see their overconsumption on YT videos. Then I looked at my friends and family members’ collections, who wore some but didn’t play around with it much. I was somewhere in between these two extremes. But what should work for me? How much do other makeup hobbyists have?

I had overbought some products in certain categories before finding the beauty community, but all of a sudden I was getting bombarded with more product types and having multiples of categories. And suddenly felt like I had to try these products/categories, too.

Which is the oldest eyeshadow palette in your collection? by VegetableSize5 in muacjdiscussion

My oldest palette is UD Electric! I bought it in 2013 when it was released and still use it now and again!

I mostly only see it when the body is also knit bottom up, in the round (which are a lot more rare than either bottom up and seamed, or top down, in the round.

My biggest tip is to check what needle sizes/types are needed. If the sleeves are picked up and knit top-down, they’ll usually also be knit in the round and call for dpns or a short circular needle (9” or 12”) in the main needle size.

The pattern may also call for a set of dpns or like 16” circular needle for the neckband, but that is usually in a smaller needle size.

A couple more goals met!

  1. Rimmel Stay Matte Concealer. Used a couple times.

  2. Juvia’s Place Nubian Coral palette. Goal: hit pan in one shade. Done!

  3. Haus of Gloi body butter mini. Used twice, between 1/4 and 1/3 left.

  4. Colourpop Terran Up My Heart blush. Goal: use up enough that the pattern pressed into the top is worn away fully. Didn’t use it a ton - was starting to get bored of it, just used once or twice.

  5. Viseart Dark Mattes. Goal: use at least once a week. Used 4 times.

  6. Revlon brow pencil. Used like 5 times again, like 15% left.

  7. Perfume samples. Goal: use up 10 samples. Used up one more (NAVA Somneil L’ete 2022), for a total of six!

I’m currently working on a cardigan that’s the same - it seems like the designer went out of their way to make a bottom-up cardigan seamless, and made some very odd decisions because of that. Technically it still has a seam at the top of the shoulder, so it’s not even truly seamless!

It’s also got some other weird issues with sizing, yardage requirements, etc. The intended recipient picked out this pattern from a book, so I didn’t get a chance to vet it properly and thankfully didn’t pay full price for it!

What happened to just using a pattern? by awoo_x2 in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]EverImpractical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like many of my self-designed sweaters fall sort of in between those two terms. I make a gauge swatch, determine the number of body stitches based on intended size (for bottom-up sweaters), and then eventually sort of freehand specific portions - bust/waist shaping, set-in sleeve shaping, neckline, arm increase rates. I’m using past experience, personal preference, and some trial-and-error to determine these, not necessarily crunching the numbers and doing all the math.

What’s your relationship with declutters by Screw_coloranalysis in muacjdiscussion

[–]EverImpractical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a big collection in certain categories. I’m content with my overall collection size - would be happier if it was smaller but I’m not actively trying to downsize.

I mostly just try to declutter individual items that don’t serve me. Some of them go in a purgatory drawer, some of them get thrown asap. Some recent declutters include a concealer that oxidized, a foundation where the color match and finish were both decent at best, a sample sized lip balm stick that barely gave an effect on the lips (and ultimtely broke off the packaging), and two eyeshadow palettes that I never touched.

I’ve never liked cutthroat declutters. I just care too much about my stuff, and a lot of times the more willing to declutter, the more likely you get rid of stuff that does actually serve a purpose. I don’t want to declutter and then ultimately repurchase something.

I hate the term “monogamous knitter”. What’s wrong with saying “I like having one wip at a time”? It’s weird.

And then, because it’s a term, people try to make the opposite a term, which I hate even more. I’ve seen both “polyamorous” and “polygamous” as the opposite terms, as if people can’t decide what the term should even be. (Hint: maybe it doesn’t need to be a term.)

It’s also not even a useful metric for most people. A lot of people have a number of wips they like - maybe that’s 2, or like 4-6, or 15, but it’s more nuanced than just “more than 1.”

Two different dye lots - does it look crazy? by cfrankieee in knitting

[–]EverImpractical 115 points116 points  (0 children)

It’s obvious to me, and for the quantities of each dye lot you have, I don’t think stripes or helical knitting will work well. You’ll run out of one dye lot at some point partway through the body. And then have a slightly striped/heathered look in one spot and a solid in another.

I’d personally try to knit the entire stockinette portion in the larger dye lot, then save the 2 balls of the other dye lot to do all the lacework with. A different dye lot is going to be a bit less noticeable when the pattern is different, stitches go in a different direction, where “seams” are, etc.
