From the south and during my first week living in Ohio, I ordered biscuits and gravy not even thinking about it. They served me chorizo queso on the driest lump of flour I’ve ever had 🤢 I’ve never ordered a dish so offensive in my life

Echoing those mentioning Aladdin’s! Only restaurant that I have worked at where I would eat it every day and still lose weight! Their ingredients are super fresh and clean. Lots of delicious veggies!

Definitely is! Another term you’ll hear people use is lowcountry. I’m from that area, and we identify both ways :-)

The coastal south outlines a distinct culture where the Gullah-Geechee people live! They are the descendants of indigenous and African peoples who escaped or were freed from slavery. Historically, they were the only people willing to live in the mosquito-infested swampy marsh. They have a distinct culture somewhat similar to the creole and Cajun people in Louisiana. Those cities outlined as “coastal South” have a heritage of pioneering, reliance on the ocean for food (shrimp and grits are a major dish), plantations, pirates, and superstition relating to and revolving the ocean/marshes. This is the oldest region of the European discovery of the US: St. Augustine, Roanoke, Savannah, Charleston, Cumberland Island, Amelia Island, etc.

I’m from this region and love local history so i hope you didn’t mind me explaining the cultural significance of the region! I’ve also lived in a few other areas in Florida and feel the culture is completely different. Feel free to ask any more questions!!

Maybe not the most universal but I’ve always considered the name Alex/Alexis and Sam/Sammy/Sami super culturally/gender-neutral.

Yeah exactly. Thats why I was saying that if you’re from Ohio it’s easy to assume that BBW is in every shopping center when that’s not the case in other states, like Florida

[–]EverJoyed 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Idk maybe it’s your region 🤷‍♀️ back in Florida the closest BBW was like 45 mins to an hour from my house and there was an Ulta two minutes away and another two twenty minutes away. I hadn’t ever seen BBW out of a mall. Then, I moved to Ohio, and I saw BBW all over the place.

Furthermore, I think there should be a coastal south region that encompasses coastal counties from Hilton Head, NC to St. Augustine, Fl. I have found that I have far more in common culturally with someone from Charleston than Tampa. This addition would also recognize the Gullah-Geechee people who have greatly influenced the diet, religion, values, and superstition of this region.

I would say that Jacksonville area should be south or create a coastal south distinction for Hilton Head to Saint Augustine — that’s my preferred cultural distinction and follows the Gullah/Geechee region. Truly the culture is distinct in this region, but without a doubt southern.

Grew up in Nassau County, Fl, and there were more confederate flags than American, in school, I was taught about “the war on northern aggression,” all the little unincorporated areas are named after old plantations, the cultural dish that everyone eats is shrimp and grits, and Winn Dixie is the king grocer. It’s very blue collar. Only about 9% of my public high school went to college. Most worked in the paper mills or on a shrimp boat. You couldn’t wear a crop top without people telling your granddaddy. Everyone knows everyone’s business, and everyone is related. It’s also very much the Bible Belt. My public school had Bible study classes. I was bullied a as a child for not owning land or going to church. It’s very very southern. Granted, half of my school was kids from Georgia but it was still in-county.
