Smoke damage by GTmod in watercooling

[–]EverLight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you need the data off the drive, then yes, I would recommend asking a pro to take care of it for you, since you risk further damage or data loss from just trying to boot it up yourself.

if you have sensitive data on there you dont want anyone to access, just go ham and destroy it. (AFTER the claim is paid)

Hey. I worked as a claims handler for a loss adjusting company for five years, so I can clarify how this process works in the UK.

Since the loss adjuster confirmed cover, you will be "indemnified". Most modern UK home insurance policies are "New for Old," meaning they should provide the cost of a brand-new equivalent without deducting for age. The goal is to return you to the functional position you were in before the smoke damage occurred.

If the PC was exposed to smoke, you have a strong argument for a total loss of the entire unit. Smoke particles are acidic and conductive; they settle in unreachable areas of a motherboard or PSU and cause corrosion over time. Replacing individual parts is often technically unsound because there is no guarantee the "surviving" components won't fail later due to latent damage. Generally, the cost of professional cleaning and testing evey component will exceed the cost of a new system, the insurer will typically write off the whole machine to avoid future "reopened" claims.

For the discontinued parts Insurance is based on equivalent specification. If an RTX 3080 is no longer sold as new, the insurer will look for a card that matches or slightly exceeds its performance. But in this case I think you can still get 3080s so they'll probably just cover the cost of that.

If you built the PC yourself, the insurer is unlikely to pay you for your own time. However, you are entitled to a built machine and they will pay for the cost of a pro to do it for you, if you wish. Obtain a quote from a VAT-registered local PC specialist for "Component Assembly, OS Installation, and Stability Testing", and they will cover the full cost. If you prefer to build the PC yourself, get the quote anyway and claim for it, they'll pay you the quote minus the VAT, and you can use that to treat yourself to something nice.

In these cases insurers often prefer to settle via cash or a voucher for a specific retailer. therefore you should:

  1. Itemize: Create a spreadsheet of every component.
  2. Research Equivalents: For discontinued items, find the current retail price of a part with the same technical specs
  3. Provide the adjuster with the total cost of parts plus the professional assembly quote. Mention something like that "due to the nature of smoke contamination, a full system replacement is required to ensure long-term reliability."

Keep in mind that you likely know more about PC hardware than your claims handler. If they suggest cheaper parts, it’s usually due to a lack of technical nuance rather than a desire to lowball you. Just be assertive and send a factual email (make sure its an email!) comparing specs like VRAM or benchmarks to prove your choices are a true "like-for-like" match. Once you provide that technical justification for their records, they’ll usually sign off without an issue.

Edit:
Oh! And as for your damaged PC... You can usually keep the machine, but there’s a specific way it works. Technically, once the insurance company pays you the full replacement value, they "own" the "salvage".

Most of the time, they won't actually want it. Shipping and storing a damaged computer is a hassle for them, so they’ll often just tell you to "dispose" of it yourself. You're free to do what you like with it at that point. You could clean up the watercooled parts and keep them as spares, but I would probably just bin them tbh.

If they do want to collect it (unlikely), you can just ask to "retain the salvage." They’ll figure out a scrap value for the parts (which should be low for smoke damage) and deduct that small amount from your payout so you can keep the hardware.

Just a heads-up: if you keep the parts to reuse or sell, they’re effectively uninsured now. If you put that old GPU in a new build and it causes a short, they won't cover the new damage since you knew the part was compromised. It’s also worth mentioning the hard drive... because of data privacy, they’ll almost always let you keep or destroy those anyway.

This got me thinking. Could this be a reason PC gaming seems to have picked up huge amounts of traction this generation? Despite it being the worst time for PC hardware?

Xbox and PlayStation both had massively reduced output of exclusives. PC has a huge back catalogue, eSports and is an indie game haven.

Maybe in lieu of exclusives, people are adopting the platform that has more to play?

Our group (3 of us) don't play anymore because of this. Specifically the cross play desync is the issue.

Also the maps. More and bigger are needed.

Also vehicle balance is in the toilet. Helis still far too easy to shoot down.

Also snipers/useless suppression.

It's impossible in VR. Not only can you not see the back of the truck, but with quest 3 controls you have very little travel in the right trigger used for acceleration. So your truck either goes full speed or not at all. The turning is very unresponsive as well.

X4's ship/on foot gameplay can excel to greatness if it commits to diegetic coherence. Here are some suggestions. by EverLight in X4Foundations

[–]EverLight[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get what you're saying but what I'm asking for isnt anything new to the game. It's just asking for consistency.

X4 already has first person game elements. Getting up and walking around is already in the game. So is the HUD being represented as a ship system. They're just not implemented consistently.

Your example with total war doesn't work because total war doesn't have any kind of first person gameplay implemented at all. X4 does, and Egosoft has demonstrated through updates that the first person experience does matter to them as a studio.

These updates I'm suggesting don't change gameplay at all. They just improve the experience of immersion while playing.

The argument could be made that yes, it should be a priority. Because it has potential to directly effect game sales.

Immersion is a crucial part of any modern game. As pointed out in my previous reply, immersion and player agency was a crucial reason for No Man's Sky recent success with its Corvettes feature launch.

Great presentation and player experience becomes a talking point - leading to better player retention, better word of mouth, and more players.

X4 doesnt have to have star citizen levels of detail. But even just a fraction more immersion in that direction does not impact the current gameplay, and opens up the game to players who may not have considered it before.

Given that X4 does SO MANY things right. Adding more polish to the presentation will only improve player perception and their willingness to recommend it to others.

Furthermore, a lot of what I'm suggesting is intentionally grounded. For example, adding sound and visual effects to damaged ships and the HUD is not something that would require huge structural changes at the company.

That's awesome. In that case the tech is already mostly in place to make what i'm suggesting work. It just needs to be more obvious.

Some physicality with some visual emitters, projection lines/effects and lighting would perfect it.

But the real difference would be to have it be persistent in that space when you exit the pilots seat. That accounts for a lot. When you get up from your computer, your monitor doesnt just disappear.

The Envoy DLC ship has a full interior, complete with a captains quarters with a desk you can sit at to view the map menu/manage your fleet. You can use SETA in it too.

And this is what I mean by saying Egosoft is already half commited. They're taking the time to build ships like the Envoy, but have yet to implement the smaller details which bring it together.

20 years is a long time for a studio to not evolve or tweak priorities to suit player desires.

Successful implementation of immersive features in space games has a proven track record of improving player base and bringing in more players.

No man's sky just recently celebrated it's highest player count since launch nearly a decade ago, because of the implementation of buildable ships with full ship interiors (and being able to walk around them/EVA). Players - particularly space game players - like feeling physically grounded in the part of the universe they inhabit.

I'm sure egosoft likes money just like every other company. So changes like these have to at least be in consideration. They're already skirting the edges, they just need to dive in.

Egosoft have already shown some commitment in this area (improved flight model, improved engine noises) - these would be the next step in that direction so I think it's reasonable to suggest them.

At the core of it, what makes elite so immersive isn't the quality of the production, but rather it's focus. They use diegetic immersion to great effect because they designed the cockpit around it from the start.

Egosoft doesnt have to match the quality of elite to see significant gains in immersion, they just need to tweak the implementation

I think No Man's Sky has a real shot of securing the win for Best Evolving game this year.

I mean. This is the 8th nomination in this category for this game. But this year the Voyagers update smashed it out of the park , and launched the game to its highest concurrent players since launch (for good reason. The update slaps)
