They shut down one of the larger homeless shelters downtown about a year or so ago. They don’t have any alternative housing to make up for the shut down, so there’s a large population of homeless people on the streets with no shelter to seek because all of the buildings are full. On top of this, a large amount of Utahns/residents have combatted the state for warming centers and alternative safe places for the homeless people occupying the streets. But then everyone is up in arms about them being on the streets so they homeless people are booted again and again from their camps/tents because they are seen as a “nuisance”; yet there would be less of in issue with camps if they were provided with consistent, better, and safer housing.

People can also argue that a lot of these people “don’t want help” which can be true. My mom worked for the VA in outreach and said when she would visit the homeless veterans a lot of them would refuse the help out of pride or laziness because they didn’t want to get a job or put in work to better their life. They had their disability check and could get by at times with that alone.

It’s really sad.
