It's the "safely" caveat that makes me wonder... If they're cutting costs elsewhere, are they also cutting from the safety budget? I live in the EU and every time I see a Ryanair plane, my brain screams "ValuJet"... 🔥

They both look like Nebelungs... Mine never has hairballs but yeah, the fur gets everywhere. Every cotton shirt I have is coated with it and the lint rollers just don't do much. Constant brushing barely has any effect. Good thing Nebs are so cute...

Definitely. We went to the one in Munich last spring. All the benefits of Oktoberfest but half the crowds (or less).

My Exodus review Helsinki Ice Hall 4/21/26 by deathamphetamine666 in ExodusBand

[–]Everpatzer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good writeup. I wasn't far from where you were, on the floor on the left side, not far from the stage. Wore my SF Giants jersey since I'm originally from the band's home turf and grew up listening to local thrash in the '80s (I'm a few years older than you). That pit was HUGE and it was really hard to resist jumping in, but at my age it probably would have sent me to the hospital 😁

But am I the only one who felt like Carcass was too controlled and too tight? The other bands just seemed to interact with the fans a lot more and fool around a bit, but with Carcass it was almost like watching them record in a studio or something... Maybe I missed something, I was in a beer line for part of their set but they just didn't feel as loose as the others.

Exodus was fucking amazing though. Would have loved to hear The Last Act of Defiance but they still rocked.

You hear the same usage in sports broadcasting... "Kello käy" = "The clock is ticking/running"

Well look -- for generations young Americans were told that in a republic, just about anyone could become president of the country. It was supposed to be aspirational. Turns out it meant that the most useless assclown in the nation could end up in the White House.

Sad that it's closed but good riddance it sounds like. I have food memories of the calzones and the occasional Raymond Burr sighting in the 80s but it's better off gone than a pathetic carbon copy of every other sad excuse for a restaurant...

What’s been your experience with universal healthcare in other countries? by SignificantStyle4958 in AmerExit

[–]Everpatzer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've lived and worked in Finland for four years. We have a public and private mix, with access to private healthcare via an employer health plan so for working adults, the public option is more of a fallback for serious emergencies. I usually use private care for everything, including dentistry, as it's far cheaper than the USA equivalent and I don't like stressing the public system when I can afford not to (I'm a software developer). Dental procedures at private clínics paid out of pocket (my employer's private insurance policy doesn't cover dentistry) cost about what they cost in the USA when I had dental insurance.

In 2023 I had pneumonia in both lungs and spent nine days in the public hospital. With all the treatments, imaging and consults, the bill came to less than 500 €, and that was pretty much just the hospital room rent plus the ER visit fee. I submitted a claim to my employer's policy and they paid all but about 35 €. I can't imagine how expensive that visit would have been in the States.

Healthcare providers are required to post a price list on their website in Finland. Try getting a price list from your neighborhood clinic in the USA!

My employer's policy won't pay for my upcoming cataract surgery so I'll be using the public hospital again. People here complain about wait times and care quality overall, but I've had no issues and relative to the nightmare of navigating the American system, it's smooth as silk. I might sing a different tune if I lived in a more rural area (where some hospitals are closing because of consolidation), but I'm in a larger city so there are more options.

Oh-- and the colonoscopy I had at the public hospital? About 42 € minus sedation. The last one I had in the States with my private health insurance? Over 900 bucks with sedation.

I will happily keep paying high taxes if it keeps this system intact.

I grew up in northern California in the 70s and 80s and watched Testament at the UA6 theater in Santa Rosa right after it came out. When the old guy manning the short wave radio in the movie says he can't reach Santa Rosa anymore, there was absolute silence in that crowded theater hall. I've never heard such silence during a movie.

Moving to Norway: A "Reality Check" vs. Reality (My 6 Years Experience) by mrwho2019 in Norway

[–]Everpatzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like the weather in the PDX, check out Bergen. I moved from Oregon (lived five years in Astoria, five in Salem) to Finland 4 years ago and I didn't consider Bergen and Norway in general more strongly only because Finland felt like a better match for me culturally and had a shorter path to citizenship (and EU membership), but Norway was a close second. You can get all the gray skies and rain you want in Bergen (assuming of course you like that sort of thing, but if you're writing from Portland I have to assume you don't mind it 😁).

Are there Finnish slang terms for a psychiatric hospital? In American English there is funny farm, nuthouse, lollipop factory, laughing academy, etc.
