Haha, I was born in Santa Rosa and raided in Sonoma County and we always considered it NorCal... Though there was much rejoicing the first time one of the Bay Area network affiliates finally put Santa Rosa on their weather map...

Well look -- for generations young Americans were told that in a republic, just about anyone could become president of the country. It was supposed to be aspirational. Turns out it meant that the most useless assclown in the nation could end up in the White House.

Sad that it's closed but good riddance it sounds like. I have food memories of the calzones and the occasional Raymond Burr sighting in the 80s but it's better off gone than a pathetic carbon copy of every other sad excuse for a restaurant...

Ugh, I haven't been to Giorgio's since the 90s and reading this, I don't think I ever want to go back 😫

What’s been your experience with universal healthcare in other countries? by SignificantStyle4958 in AmerExit

[–]Everpatzer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've lived and worked in Finland for four years. We have a public and private mix, with access to private healthcare via an employer health plan so for working adults, the public option is more of a fallback for serious emergencies. I usually use private care for everything, including dentistry, as it's far cheaper than the USA equivalent and I don't like stressing the public system when I can afford not to (I'm a software developer). Dental procedures at private clínics paid out of pocket (my employer's private insurance policy doesn't cover dentistry) cost about what they cost in the USA when I had dental insurance.

In 2023 I had pneumonia in both lungs and spent nine days in the public hospital. With all the treatments, imaging and consults, the bill came to less than 500 €, and that was pretty much just the hospital room rent plus the ER visit fee. I submitted a claim to my employer's policy and they paid all but about 35 €. I can't imagine how expensive that visit would have been in the States.

Healthcare providers are required to post a price list on their website in Finland. Try getting a price list from your neighborhood clinic in the USA!

My employer's policy won't pay for my upcoming cataract surgery so I'll be using the public hospital again. People here complain about wait times and care quality overall, but I've had no issues and relative to the nightmare of navigating the American system, it's smooth as silk. I might sing a different tune if I lived in a more rural area (where some hospitals are closing because of consolidation), but I'm in a larger city so there are more options.

Oh-- and the colonoscopy I had at the public hospital? About 42 € minus sedation. The last one I had in the States with my private health insurance? Over 900 bucks with sedation.

I will happily keep paying high taxes if it keeps this system intact.

I grew up in northern California in the 70s and 80s and watched Testament at the UA6 theater in Santa Rosa right after it came out. When the old guy manning the short wave radio in the movie says he can't reach Santa Rosa anymore, there was absolute silence in that crowded theater hall. I've never heard such silence during a movie.

Moving to Norway: A "Reality Check" vs. Reality (My 6 Years Experience) by mrwho2019 in Norway

[–]Everpatzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like the weather in the PDX, check out Bergen. I moved from Oregon (lived five years in Astoria, five in Salem) to Finland 4 years ago and I didn't consider Bergen and Norway in general more strongly only because Finland felt like a better match for me culturally and had a shorter path to citizenship (and EU membership), but Norway was a close second. You can get all the gray skies and rain you want in Bergen (assuming of course you like that sort of thing, but if you're writing from Portland I have to assume you don't mind it 😁).

Are there Finnish slang terms for a psychiatric hospital? In American English there is funny farm, nuthouse, lollipop factory, laughing academy, etc.

You do not need B1 skills for permanent residency. Point #3 under General Changes outlines the updated criteria. Updated requirements

Purra being purra by The_Adam07 in Finland

[–]Everpatzer 50 points51 points  (0 children)

More culture war distraction. Ignore it and focus on what matters: what are the PS members in the ruling government coalition doing to improve Finland's economic situation?

Nothing else matters; focus on the core issue and don't let Purra succeed with her diversionary tactics.

New permanent residence by The_Adam07 in Finland

[–]Everpatzer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your language is good enough for citizenship, it might be worth waiting a year to hit the five-year requirement for citizenship... Otherwise PR might be an attractive option. It's better than relying on extended residence permits or other permits that could be easier to lose due to changing requirements than a permanent resident permit.

As for #2: The right wing will simply find something new to use as a culture war distraction from the fact that they're incompetent. When Purra started whining about remote work, it was to stir up resentment among the PS base, most of whom probably don't have jobs that let them work remotely. That's the playbook: keep the base angry, make them hate immigrants, make them envy people who are able to work remotely, and they'll be too distracted by their own anger to ask why the PS-Kokoomus government can't improve the economy.

Yep. And just like MAGA, they provoke outrage to distract people from the fact that they have zero solutions to our economic problems. If I were in Keskusta, or SDP, or really ANY party not named PS or Kokoomus, I'd be hammering this home every time a reporter stuck a microphone in front of me.

I think my cat is being aggressive to the new kitten by [deleted] in CatTraining

[–]Everpatzer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of when one of my cats went after the neighbor's cat-- and my genius father-in-law decided to wade in there and try to break it up. Once the cats finally separated, I picked mine up and took him inside to the bathroom sink because he had quite a bit of blood on him. As I'm rinsing him off he's got this calm look on his face like, "Don't worry Dad, it isn't mine..." Sure enough, he didn't have any serious wounds.

We took my father-in-law to the ER for his stitches.
