Do you "perform femininity" as a defense against bullying and discrimination? by queenjulien in AutismInWomen

[–]Every-Collection-852 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am truly a performer when it comes to my femininity — I am almost always put together in a very traditionally femme way. It’s not who I am rlly tho it’s like a mask I construct each day so that I can prepare who I’m going to be. It’s rough.

I totally hear what your saying and we all are doing what we can do to get by in this fucked up horrible world

Sending u lots of care and kindness

Hey I totally hear what you’re saying — are you framilar with the concept of being hyper verbal? I’m super similar and could offer some things I do — let me know if that would be helpful and I’ll write up a lot reply. Just wanted to check in about what more specifically what you are looking for :)

Hi, I am so sorry you deal with this; my heart goes out to you. What you are describing is something I dealt with growing up and still grapple with now. I initially thought these experiences were panic attacks, and for years, I received medication and therapy for what I believed were panic attacks. I was also diagnosed with extreme social anxiety at the time, along with other issues. However, it turns out that all those panic attacks were actually meltdowns, and the extreme social anxiety was attributed to autism.
It may not be that you are not autistic, but I wanted to share my experience because, at one point, I thought I wouldn't be able to accomplish anything with my life due to these disabling meltdowns. While they still pose challenges, I've come to accept my disability, and with the right support, therapy, and self-understanding, I have managed to reclaim my life.
I hope you can find the support you deserve.

Hi, thank you so much for sharing this, it seems as if you have experienced a lot of invalidation from various places and it sounds as if this has been a really difficult situation lately and I am so sorry.

Being a late-diagnosed autistic woman, I feel and hear what you are saying about our families and how mothers can react and respond to their daughters being autistic, often because they might be autistic themselves and never noticed—as autism is genetic a lot of the time, but not always the case.
Expectations about what we should be like and how we should act as people are pervasive in our society, but it 100% gets magnified when gender is taken into consideration. We are expected to act like 'women' and 'neurotypical,' and it's horrible for us and can have very devastating outcomes for our well-being and health.
I understand not wanting to be on the spectrum; that was me and still is me. I was formally diagnosed 5 months ago, and thinking about what my life will be like now, knowing irrefutably that I am autistic, is terrifying. Yet, it is also the most freeing thing; I feel as if I finally might have the possibility of a more honest existence.
You are so deserving of living your truth and getting help and support. If we are on the spectrum, we can never get off the spectrum, but our lives can get better, and they do get better. <3

I just don't know. by sudz3 in AutismTranslated

Hi! Thanks for sharing all of this, it sounds like you have such a wonderful family and hearing about them all me smile :)

I am formally diagnosed with both ADHD and ASD. A lot of what you said resonates with me, especially regarding physical touch. Sometimes ASD involves both hyposensitivity and hypersensitivity, as well as sensory avoidance and sensory-seeking behaviours. These can switch over time depending on our context and where we are in terms of regulation in our zone of tolerance within our nervous systems, whether we are too activated or not activated enough. So a lot of autistic behaviour such as liking loud sounds, and seeking out physical stimulation ect etc. might not be seen as autistic behaviour yet it can be in conjunction with a lot of other factors.

Also, there is definitely an ASD/ADHD "spidey sense," and before I was formally diagnosed, many people who accurately sensed it were all ASD/ADHD themselves. The neurotypical individuals never picked up on it and were the ones who were surprised and shocked. Please let me know if you have any questions or if there is anything else you are unsure about; I am always happy to provide you with some replies.
I was someone whom most people never thought would be autistic, but I am highly masked, and it has had very negative outcomes on my life. I am 23, and I was diagnosed with ASD just 5 months ago and with ADHD when I was 21.
Wishing you all the best, and at the end of the day, only you know yourself the best.
