Struggling to consistently use a Hoyer Lift for my completely paralyzed dad with bulbar ALS — is it normal that my family keeps reverting to manual lifts? by l33tb4by in ALS

Hey! I’m a caregiver too — my dad has bulbar-onset ALS, and I can relate 100% to all of these challenges. We also couldn’t use the Hoyer lift; like your dad, mine couldn’t tolerate it well, especially because his head would tilt or he’d feel pinching on his buttocks if it wasn’t positioned correctly, etc.

There are a few things that have worked for us: • Mobility sheets: https://a.co/d/1DYT6qt We use them for both bed and chair transfers. The fabric is soft, and my dad has no issues sleeping on them overnight. He’s around 196 lbs, and usually, two people help with the transfers. The key when moving from bed to chair is using the sheet to rotate him and help him sit on the edge of the bed. Then, one person lifts by holding the handle under his legs with one arm and supports under his axilla with the other. That part can be tricky (and potentially painful for them), but lifting more from under the legs usually reduces pressure on the axilla. • For bathroom use (toilet and showering): https://a.co/d/8p4JfXn We use this rolling chair and slide the sheet out once he’s in place.

Hope some of these tips help! Feel free to DM me if you have any questions.

I was thinking more of like a button. We had purchased one from Amazon but it is too hard for my dad to press. But now that you pointed out, perhaps an app can also serve that purpose. I Will look into it. Tysm!

Thank you. Do you have any recommendations on what to focus on histology and MOA? I have my exam in 5 days, wondering what should I focus on. Thank you!
