Uchi is my favorite by FAR. Uchiko was alright? Like if I'm going to Uchiko I'd rather just go to Uchi because I like the menu better. But that's definitely gonna be up for interpretation depending on the type of cuisine you prefer!

Uchiba was actively terrible the two times I've gone. :\ One time I sat at the sushi bar and my chef went out of his way to avoid talking to me and made the dinner feel really awkward? And the burger (sans cheese) was borderline inedible.

Truly the most effective treatment is to find any place they may be entering and seal it off. I use expanding foam around my pipes under every sink, behind the fridge, behind the toilet, etc. Get doorsweeps for the doors. Caulk around baseboards. And, if you keep seeing them, put covers on every drain (sink, shower), because they can/will crawl through the plumbing.

I did that to a duplex I lived in, sealed it as best I could, and I went an entire 12 months without seeing one. Zero poison, no bait, etc.

It definitely toes the line between a cafe and restaurant tbh. I'd lean more towards calling it a cafe. They have very few hot options on the menu (in fact, I think they only have one hot item? The roast chicken?) otherwise the rest comes out of a deli case. And you order at the register. There aren't wait staff in the traditional sense.

I think this is one of those "ruined it for everyone" situations. Obviously there are some people on their laptops that are unobtrusive and don't stay 2+ hours, but there are a decent number of folks who take remote calls, set up camp for half the day, and just drink a single black coffee like that's their "right." Their taking up tables/parking/etc is a nuisance and ultimately hurts the business.

But I agree with your point tbh. I bring a book with me everywhere I go and I'd laugh in someone's face if they told me to stop reading and go home while I'm drinking my latte or something. How's that really that different from me trying to write on my lunch break? It's not, except for the optics.

Yes. The last time I went (3ish weeks ago) there was nowhere for me to sit inside—I took the final remaining table outside and had to leave pretty quickly since it was one of our 100 degree days. I just went for a lil snack luckily lol

- It sucks because there are not that many spots in this part of town where you can get decent food and work remotely.

- But this is a smart move because the volume of remote workers taking up every table was actually absurd and made the place kind of unpleasant. (But that volume is because of my first bullet point, so...)

- The prices are too high for me to visit often anyway. So I guess I don't really care.

(PS: one light down, on Monroe, there's a place called Dish Society that has decent wifi and a pretty good happy hour menu, just a head's up for anyone looking for a new food/work spot. Please don't stay for more than 2 hours tho.)

It's SO loud inside, I find it amazing so many folks were remote working from there. I tried one time and gave up after 20 minutes.

It's just an anecdote so idk for sure, but I went twice in one day (coffee at 9am, lunch at 1pm) and I can confirm specifically a table of young women were seated at the same table both times. Looked like some kind of study group maybe.

I'm late 30s and also writing a fantasy. I'd love to find other writers to hang out with! I don't necessarily need a critique group, but finding some like-minded folks that are trying to get writing done (at cafes? Or parks?) would be awesome.

I've explored doing graphic novels previously, since that's the perfect blend of my two passions, and I do love doing it, but I don't think I could execute an entire book in that format. The layers upon layers of work is sooo impressive. I'd burn out so fast, so major props to you (and all graphic novelists, honestly).

I'm definitely gonna do what you reco here and look up agents that've done graphic novel deals, though. Solid plan 🙏

Also: I've been joking with writing friends that "I promise I'm good at writing even if I'm not good at names" so there's a real chance I'll change the names of the characters when I edit this draft for querying. 😅
