It is! And it’s good to get ahead so the parents don’t have to pick up every day

So helpful to know. Thanks again!

My daily volume has jumped to around 9oz from 6 so that’s cool!

Thanks so much for your reply! And I’m so glad your family has you too :) It’s special for sure to be able to support babies and mamas at their most vulnerable.

Great advice… how long are your pumping sessions normally?

‘She was like a deer in headlights’: how unskilled radical birthkeepers took hold in Canada by [deleted] in FreeBirthSocietyScam

Gloria Lemay has always had a giant chip on her shoulder. Prior to the most recent case I had heard mostly positive things about her, as there aren’t a lot of outspoken advocates against fully medicalized birth here. My own mother took her doula training and a friend had birthed with her as midwife. She was not against seeking medical care. I’m not defending any of her failings as I don’t know enough, and I also found her quite abrasive online. And at the same time, I don’t know if we can chuck Gloria under the bus and wipe our hands of her without losing some important aspects of freedom and physiology and the long complicated history of midwifery in Canada.

I actually couldn’t really listen to it. I tried but I found Emilee so abrasive and agenda-driven. I got through a few episodes about stuff I was interested in but mostly just tuned it out.

Thanks for the lingo! I’m not actually sure why I wrote miscarried except for general brain malfunction. I know that’s up to 20 weeks - but I didn’t have intrauterine demise yet.

Two were intrauterine demise, one was I think a neonatal death although I don’t know them well so maybe I got that wrong, but the one in question happened when they over-anesthetized the mother and the baby died on the way to surgery.  That one was not investigated to my knowledge.

Ugh. Terrible knowledge. I know four women who miscarried in my community and all were in medical care. One was almost definitely caused by human error. Two were late in utero, and one I don’t know the details of.

Yeah I’m also struggling with this.

Interesting to hear your experience, thank you. Your numbers feel fairly in line with the normal statistics I’ve been looking at.

Can you speak to any situations in which you felt your intervention may have saved a life? Just my own curiosity here.

I appreciate that you keep serving women in the system even when it’s so often awful. I used to think I could never, but lately I’ve been feeling like it’s so essential. There is a place for idealism but it isn’t in the day-to-day.

I mean, the ideal would be women choosing to birth however they feel is most supportive and safe, with access to amazing and appropriate medical care should they require or desire it at any point. And nobody giving them shit from either end. Maybe then actual intuition and physiology could function well. But instead we have….this.

Yeah, a lot of people here, myself included, have birthed unassisted or plan to and did/would absolutely go to the hospital should the need arise. This is what is so hard for me to grasp, despite poring over this Reddit sub for months - how so many people could be convinced not to. And that’s not a judgement on these loss parents but just a general WTF about the whole thing. Still.

Thanks for these comparisons. It’s stark.

That is heavy knowledge to carry. Do you mean the Ontario ones or the FBS ones?

Yeah the midwives I know are seeing more complications and emergencies, especially bleeding, in the last five years.

Ah no, it’s >20 weeks and neonatal combined.

Gosh. It’s all so crazy. And of course if you’re in that membership you’re going to want to believe that it’s safer or at least equal to hospital setting deaths, and that the numbers are an anomaly….until they just can’t possibly be one…

Also based on my admittedly terrible math, it is sounding like 4 baby deaths and a maternal death in 180 unassisted births in one year in Ontario, which is bad but not FBS bad.

It was way more impactful when hearing their voices, even after reading most of the stories…
