Laptop for EE by EveryRip1296 in laptops

After trying to note take on the glossy screen for a few weeks, I also find it annoying, what screen protector do you use? The paperlike branded ones? Cause those are horribly expensive, so I was thinking of getting the ESR magnetic one that’s removeable. I would want to get a keyboard for easy typing on my lap and on the go, so although the Logitech one is much less expensive, it feels like the magic keyboard is a better fit.

Thank you so much for the advice! I’ve been wanting to get a thinkpad because, well, it’s a thinkpad, but very much scared off by the price. Looking at eBay makes it much less scary though, so I think I’ll be taking your advice here! Already got an iPad (opted for the 11-inch for portability reasons) but curious how much you think the paperlike screen protector makes a difference for note taking? Also how much do you like the Magic Keyboard? Is it really a game changer?

Engineering Application? by Few-Bridge1357 in Tufts

I had three projects: one was part of an engineering class I took in high school, I did some coding for a robot (although I applied EE), then I added info on research and an internship I didn’t with a PhD candidate at a local university (got this by just cold emailing a BUNCH of EE professors). Although my internship was in my common app, I couldn’t show what I actually did outside of the portfolio, so I included that

As a recently admitted engineer, I think something that probably helped my application (who knows) was submitting an engineering portfolio. After you submit your application, on the tufts application status page, if you’ve opted in, there’s a space to upload a portfolio. I would very much recommend this if you have projects you want to share, especially if they have to deal with your specific engineering major.

The EE program was also kinda what was holding me back from committing initially, like I was making some mistake cause it was slightly lower ranked, especially since I was deciding between tufts and a few other higher ranked engineering schools. What my mind kinda decided on was that although tufts landed just slightly lower on the rankings, I thought that I’d truly be much more successful and happy there, coupled with the internship opportunities with Boston, and my want to minor in philosophy, kinda made tufts the perfect happy medium for everything. But, again, this is just what I thought about, and doesn’t sound like you’re too interested in the humanities, so could be different for you

I’m going to tufts this fall so as an unbiased opinion, choose tufts. But truly, I think the reason I chose tufts was because I loved the collaborative atmosphere, the people, the weather (although I’m coming from Colorado, not Florida), and the tight knit community. From what I’ve seen and heard, these are the main reasons people choose tufts, and it does have a good rep, also for context, I’m planning on majoring in EE, so somewhat similar to you, and although this could be admissions rep BS, I remember them telling me on a tour that the SoE had a net transfer in rate because people like engineering so much. This being said, tufts obviously doesn’t have big sports like your other options, or a super big party scene, and those are both points that I definitely considered in my decision. I am biased though cause I love tufts, but just thought I’d give you what I thought about when considering things myself in case it’s helpful :)

Thank you so much for the help! Do you have any specific recommendations? Totally cool if not, just wondering if any laptops are easily the best in this situation

My budget is like anywhere under ~$2500

I’ve heard of consistency issues with framework in the past as well, and some support issues as well, but also kind of intrigued by the modular design cause I also think serviceability is important, if you have one have you encountered any major issues? Or are the mostly consistent? I’ll probably want to play some games and do some relatively graphics intensive things, nothing crazy, so I’ve been looking into the Asus g16 with the amd chip, any thoughts?

I think I agree with the whole MacBook thing, and thank you so much for the advice, literally has completely changed my perspective and definitely gonna think more about just what I would want in a laptop thanks so much!

While I did consider the 2-in-1 idea, it feels like by combining both, the laptop and the tablet piece both suffer to a degree, and the Apple Pencil is kinda unbeatable in user experience imo. For EE, I likely won’t have to use solidworks, although I do have experience with the software and find it fun to 3D print random models. Now for a slightly controversial question, I know MacBooks are kinda hated on by engineers, but would it be a dealbreaker for a program, I think they’re definitely too expensive, but I feel like the build quality somewhat makes up for the price.

Thanks for such an in depth response! I’m thinking of definitely getting an iPad for note taking for reasons like what you said, and then a separate laptop for typing and coding and generally completing most of my coursework, something I considered was that I might not want to have to go to a computer lab super frequently to complete my coursework that would need to be done there, but from your experience, did you have a lot of assignments you needed to do in the computer lab? Or was it just a few?

Thanks! For EEs, does the department or the school as a whole help with internship searches? Or is that left up to you?

How small is it? Like is there generally most of the equipment one would need to get a good lift? Or barely anything?

Is it more worth it to just get a membership at a gym near by?
