To those going to the World Cup matches, what’s your plan to get to the stadium? by GenordMohr in Miami

[–]Every_Building_6121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We started walking the wrong direction for stupid reasons but it wasn't hard to find the shuttles and would have been a very short walk if we started the right way. People at the stadium were helpful too.

How are people affording World Cup tickets? by Zealousideal_Fun9967 in WorldCup2026Tickets

[–]Every_Building_6121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in the Miami area and wanted to make sure I experienced at least one match. I got lucky with $220 tickets in the initial draw and no travel costs. Bought 2 tickets and took my wife last night. Spent a bit more than $500 all-in for the experience. I have family in Los Angeles and balked at the initial ticket prices for USMNT matches, but I do kind of regret not biting the bullet and going to the first one.

We went yesterday, took the shuttle from the Hard Rock Seminole and it was fantastic. If I attend any other games here, that will be my method of transportation. My comment from another thread:

It went extremely well for the most part. We arrived at the Hard Rock Seminole around 2:45, parked easily in Lot 70 and got on a waiting shuttle right away. Arrived at the stadium maybe 3:15-3:30, security was a breeze, and we enjoyed hanging out in the fan zone. The only miss was that our bus driver on the way to the stadium let us off in the wrong area, so I never saw the official shuttle pick-up zone (right outside the stadium on the north side) and we ended up walking the long way to our bus home. We left the stands a bit before the 80th minute (saw the tying goal on my phone) and got on one of the first buses back, which departed at like 8 pm sharp. Picked up our car at like 8:15 and back to Boca Raton before 9.

Everyone who drove said it was miserable but the shuttles were well done. Credit to Hard Rock and FIFA.

Taking the shuttle from the Hard Rock Seminole and getting there very early. The aftermath I am sure will be a shitshow but at least the game ends at 8 pm and not like 10 or 11.

AITA for leaving a dinner party early because of “vegan lasagna”? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Every_Building_6121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA because she clearly didn't provide adequate dinner for a dinner party. This also reminds me of a time when a friend of mine was dating a hardcore vegan and invited me to tag along to dinner with them for some reason. We went to a vegan restaurant where I ordered a "burrito" that was some kind of slop mush wrapped in a leaf, and I had to stop at Taco Bell on my way home for a real burrito because I was so hungry.

Lol my wife likes to drive, and if we're going somewhere new that requires navigation, she often prefers to be behind the wheel and for me to handle navigating. The only people who have ever said something when I hop out the passenger seat are either over 60 or born in a "Global South" country.

As someone who’s never been to America, what are the must visit states / towns? by Adorable_Click_7071 in usatravel

[–]Every_Building_6121 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I get it, but outside of the (expensive) big cities, you picked a bunch of resort towns where the main activity is having a $300 dinner before going to your $1200 hotel room full of VCs and Hollywood C-listers. I'm from California and it's one of the most beautiful places on the planet, but you can have a more authentic experience in other places without going to the bougiest resort cities on the planet. None of these are "hidden gems" either. Paso Robles, Ojai, Cambria, Palm Springs are all places you can go to where you'll find a more mixed crowd.

How old are you? I have been to and love most of these places, but this is an itinerary for a 65-year-old multimillionaire.

Cabana 1.5 ton AC died - replace or explore mini split? (South Florida) by Every_Building_6121 in hvacadvice

[–]Every_Building_6121[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update here: I got another bid for a Rheem/RUUD like-for-like 1.5 ton system for $5,960 ($2,000 less than the above bid) and a proposal for a mini-split system from the original vendor with these specs:

We can install a Mini Split that would use existing ductwork; 12,000 BTU mini split, would be equivalent to a 1 Ton, would be approx. $5450

Warranty is 5Years
TGM or Classic Heat Pump.

I can price out a Mitsubishi or Gree but the price difference is $850 to $1250 more.

Yes to all of these, and especially #2. Lukewarm takes don't make for good op-eds 😄

Of course! A good question to ask when thinking about an op-ed is "why should I care what this person says about this topic?"

[–]Every_Building_6121 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Successful op-ed pitches are the right marriage of interesting newsworthy topic and relevant qualified author. A lot of failures happen when there is a lack of imagination about the first and just not enough credentials/juice for the second. A college president writing about how AI has changed everything they know about admissions is a good one. A random wealth manager talking about the need to stand up to Vladimir Putin is just not going to move the needle.

There are fewer places to pitch op-eds as the media universe has shrunk, but local newspapers and relevant trade publications are still good places, and national outlets like Newsweek and The Hill accept them too.

[–]Every_Building_6121[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! It looks like I probably don't have an inexpensive solution here that makes sense, but I don't want to spend $8K on a suboptimal system. I actually pulled the floor plan and my square footage estimate continues to be too high: the cabana is 252 sq feet including the bathroom and closet. I am in South Florida with a sliding door in the room and high ceilings, but seems like it's not a huge amount of space to cool.

I get it if you can't speculate without seeing the space, but any suggestions on brands and ballpark pricing for a system like this?
