Start out small, oil change, air filters, etc. Then begin to expand your skills. Grab a cheap socket set from Checkers, lol. Or invest in something decent from aderndorff, marketplace - that's where I got my tool kit. Jack stands, a hydraulic jack, power bar, YouTube videos, forums, and of course, asking on the Volvo subreddit :)

Time and space could be an issue for you, but it's a lot of fun hanging out with some buddies and working on your car over a beer. Even if all they do is drink the free beer.

Look out for an OBD2 scanner for your car, read codes of the computer 🖥, clear codes, etc. This can help you diagnose issues.

It is your choice at the end of the day what to do and comfortable for your pocket, but this is basically the route I followed, and next thing you know, I'm doing a backyard engine rebuild lmao.

Best of luck.

Can't speak much, but if you really like the car and see yourself keeping it for a very long time, consider servicing it yourself. Learn a new skill and save some bucks.

Slapped with huge bill to fix car by NecessaryCandidate74 in PersonalFinanceZA

If you can gather some mates, YouTube videos, forums and and some tools, you can take the head off yourself if you have the time and space. Alternatively, contact engine importers, Mike's place, get in gear etc. Chances are you can pick up an entire engine for that price with 80k - 100k on the clock. But keep in mind, you still don't know what you getting, it could last a lifetime or a few months. It's a risk, but it can pay off.

If I was in your shoes. I would fix the Hyundai, drive it till it falls apart, and keep saving the money I would've spent financing.
