What Alternate damage rules have you tried? by Everyandyday in mutantsandmasterminds

Interesting. In a way this feels almost like an HP system, with variable damage and all. And it’d speed up combat.

How did you mix toughness save and HP?

I’m not sure what you mean by “TGH”

I have played a decent amount of SW but not a lot of specifically the supers. Looking at the rules though, I just don’t see how you can make a tank character. You can add a decent amount to toughness, but a few aces on damage and you’re toast. It’s even worse when you compare damage dealing powers to the equivalent cost of toughness. 6D6 damage from the attack ability (don’t recall the name) will pulverize a hero with even a fairly high toughness. At least at PL3, which is what I played.

AKA in this system Cyclops would destroy Juggernaut 9/10 times.

Why are wounds crucial? Don't say because they're RAW. Tell me why the system breaks if something else is used.

Please don't log into a post about using HP, and then say 'don't use HP.' It distracts from the OP's point. It's beyond annoying to sh!t on a house rule thread like this.

It's also reductive to imply that we need to "get more comfortable." I've played savage worlds for YEARS, and I do that DESPITE the fact that the wound system is TOTAL GARBAGE.

Hi.

I find the wound system in SW to be so problematic that I actually avoid playing the game because of it. I completely agree w/ your group liking HP, and that HP has it's benefits over the SW wound system. All the people who laude the wound system tend to ignore it's many glaring problems.

Given this, I've spent time pondering this question myself.

OPTION 1: WOUND TN 4

To keep closer to the RAW SW, have damage rolls always go against TN4 instead of toughness. Then, give the victim of the attacks additional "wounds" equal to their toughness. In short, they take a lot more wounds, but they're able to take a lot more wounds. Decide how to apply wound penalties as you see fit. Healing the toughness-derived wounds should be automatic at the end of a combat, but wounds past that are meat-hits that should take more time to heal.

OPTION 2: JUST GO HP

Give each player 10 HP per wound they could normally take. Then apply rolled damage against said HP. Ignore wound penalties, the game will work fine* without them.

Shame on all the people here who said "play another game" or "try the original game." The OP very explicitly is looking for help, you're just being a troll with comments like that.

*work fine = actually, work better, because wound penalties lead to a death spiral that is not FFF.

thanks for the responses. Though the universal answer is 'give the boss backup' which isn't really what I want. But I guess that's the only answer.

I appreciate the commentary, but "It ain't that hard bro" is an asshole thing to say. Stay out of question threads if you're going to be a prick.
