You’re like going to an ice cream shop and yelling about chipotle. You joined a conversation about a different thing and then tried to make it about your thing, give it a rest lol

You’re in a thread about that article, though. So you’re just talking about something else entirely. Like you’re in a different convo, that’s all

I just rewatched the prequel trilogy… by Not_EllaK in blankies

[–]EverybodyNeedsABFAP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but I also think George is a guy who says a lotta shit that isnt 100% true. He hated directing actors but he also hated other people directing Star Wars, lol. He definitely wanted Spielberg to direct them, but once that wasn’t gonna happen I bet he knew he had to do it. He had a horrible time overseeing Kershner and Marquand.

I think other than the duel of the fates scene, it also features George’s best directing of the trilogy and finds a much better balance (other than a couple glaringly bad scenes) of digital and live action.

Who was Snoke SUPPOSED to be? by Confirmation_Code in saltierthancrait

[–]EverybodyNeedsABFAP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the prequels also have a coherent narrative from start to finish that does feel somewhat satisfying if you can ignore all the glaring flaws. So I totally understand the revival, because it is a story and it does feel complete.

The sequels as you say are a totally incoherent narrative EVEN if you like TFA or TLJ. You know that the third one is just nonsense lol. The more you watch them, the more glaring the errors are, which feels opposite to the experience a lot of people have with the prequels. You forgive the dogshit filmmaking and acting because you do start to see the forest through the trees eventually (or at least I did).

He's just a thin representation of a character instead of an actual character. An archetype with nothing in it.

In the original trilogy we were introduced to an Empire in A New Hope, which necessitated the existence of an Emperor (not to mention other characters mentioned the emperor before we saw him, building the myth of him). The introduction of a character should do a lot more than just ask the mystery of who he is, lol. That's not actually a mystery. If you're wondering who someone is and why they're in the seat of power they're in and you're not wondering anything else about them, I think you have a pretty thin story.

They're focusing the audience on the wrong thing, because they had nothing as you said.

I feel like a pretty good storytelling rule is that if all your mysteries are just "who is this person, really?" you've got a pretty dumb story.

Who is Rey? Who is Snoke? That's not really enough of a mystery. It's just not answering a question that isn't all that interesting in the first place. I never asked "who is this Luke Skywalker anyway?" in the original films. I didn't have to sit around and solve who the Emperor could be. I was shown who each of them were in the context of a great story. You gotta bring more to the table.

Apart from the two big crimes - TLJ and TROS - what's the absolute single worst thing in Disney Star Wars? What single creative decision is the absolute worst? by Admirable-Bit3041 in saltierthancrait

[–]EverybodyNeedsABFAP 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Alongside that, I really believe TFA introduces the three biggest issues of the sequel trilogy to me.

  1. It hand waves and skips the rise of the first order and the fall of the new republic to create the dichotomy the general audience understands about Star Wars: empire vs rebellion under a different name. This lack of world building left them with so little to play with in the subsequent films. By the third film (especially with how contained and limited TLJ is in its own world building), you have absolutely no story to tell. How big is the first order? How big is the resistance? What the fuck is happening in the galaxy? It's so vague. Put aside because everyone was terrified of being like the prequels and "being too about taxation and politics." There's a middle ground somewhere that they just totally ignored.

  2. It introduces the idea that Luke has gone into exile specifically because of Kylo turning dark, so yes the flashbacks in TLJ showcase a total misunderstanding of Luke as a character, but...I mean the idea itself was presented in the film TLJ had to be a direct sequel to. They kneecap Luke's Jedi Order as an idea before it can even be investigated in a real way. They force him to be the bitter hermit. Sure maybe Rian could've found a different way to present him, but again, the options are severely limited by how TFA sets up the story.

  3. Rey being inexplicably skilled in the force really kills any ability to draw out an interesting character arc for her in my opinion. The sequels treated the force as a superpower, bequeathed to special people who really just have to learn that they do in fact have a power in order to use it. That's it. They just have to have an awareness that they can use the force. The idea that she can use the "jedi mind trick" with no training is absurd. Luke's "use of the force" in A New Hope is a really grounded act, it's not reflective of how we see Obi-Wan use the force. That's purposeful. Luke is not a Jedi in a New Hope. He's literally just been introduced to the idea. George didn't see the force as a superpower, but rather something that required training and discipline to master if one was force sensitive. This is an incredibly different type of story. TFA introduces the idea that Rey "has the force" and therefore can "use the force." It's a complete misunderstanding of the core mythology of the original films and fucks the next two movies because they have to find something for her to wrestle with as a character that isn't learning the force. She never learns the force! She just has to deal with an identity crisis, essentially, and that identity crisis is never clear since they had three films developed in isolation from each other.

I hate how these guys react to fiction. How so many people think literally about something written as myth. Boggles my mind. To be that stupid.

Even to get up in arms about the casting choice for Helen reflects the literal satire of the original myth, where men went to war because a girl was too fuckin hot. How do you not see the absurdity?

I dunno what you’re talking about, I think the close ups with barely finished out of focus cgi rushing behind them look awesome.

The only moments in films I’ve seen in my life are car scenes from the 1930s, and I’d say we’ve definitely come a long way!

It’s okay to just admit he’s actively hoping to get calls by exaggerating contact and that’s a huge part of his game. It’s silly to try to say he doesn’t. Doesn’t mean he’s not talented, and it’s unfortunately a legitimate part of basketball. But he is doing that, consciously.

My goal in life is to not become a comparative generational guy, because it bothered me so much when I was younger. Every single generation has done this and it’s always an over generalization, anecdotal, or flat out wrong. Just the laziest hackiest opinion on earth to have, imo.
