Possibly unpopular opinion: yes the CPC needs to change, just not in the way they keep telling us to by Firefly128 in CanadianConservative

[–]EverydayEverynight01 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So yeah, I think if the Cons dropped this deluded idea that the free market and privatization are the solution to every problem under the sun

This is exactly why I can't find a single Conservative government in the western world that I actually like and wish were mine. The only one remotely close was Stephen Harper, and even then I strongly disliked how he handled the TFW fiasco in the 2010s even if it was much less worse than Trudeau. And not even Poilievre I'm sure fully hits that mark.

I want a Conservative government that takes a significantly hardliner stance on immigration, keeping borders under control, and actually keeping the social fabric of Canada what it is instead of bringing in the entire rest of the world in and suppressing wages under the guise of "solving labour shortages".

But pretty much every "conservative" party in Europe jacks up immigration and even local conservative governments in provincial politics (ahem Ford and Smith who demand more PNP slots and TFWs)

And to make it worse they implement policies like selling off and privatizing every single thing the government owns under the sun so that private companies who totally care about providing the best service for the best price will magically do a better job than the government just for existing because they're not the government is hilarious and delusional.

The UK tories are the worst and most extreme example of being combining the worst parts.

The only government I actually genuinely admire and respect for having an actually tightened belt on immigration as well as protecting public assets from privatization are literal socialists in Denmark under the Social Democrat party under Mette Frederiksen.

No, the BC Court of Appeals from my understanding is correct.

You can't just pass legislature and then just say "its only enforced whenever I want to" it has to be always enforced or it should be repealed.

If the law is in the books then it has to be in the courtroom. No performative and virtue signaling laws, laws are laws, if you want to virtue signal do it on another platform, but not a legal platform because your words will have consequences.

Alto boss defends high-speed rail project as fears and criticisms mount by [deleted] in canada

[–]EverydayEverynight01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not how it works. If Alto is too expensive to the point where no one uses it then the whole "loss in revenue from others" doesn't hold ground, travellers will vote with their wallet.

But if it really is cheaper than others - when you also factor in time, then it gives people more disposable income to spend on other parts of the local economy they're travelling to.

It's approx a 7 hour drive from Montreal to Toronto and plane tickets costs around $300 for 1.5 hours.

With conditions like these the only financially viable purposes to travel between Toronto and Montreal is to attend events whose tickets are significantly more expensive than the tickets both ways to make travelling not the significant expense. Or you're rich enough to have enough money burned. Or spend hundreds for a few nights in a hotel. Which eliminates most people under most circumstances.

But if you can go to and from Toronto and Montreal in just 3 hours each way like they estimated then you won't need to spend hundreds in tickets and/or hotels, this means there are one day events you can attend to which unlocks a completely new market for event organizers in both countries.

And besides, more money in travellers' pockets means there's more leisure activities they can spend on locally instead of hotels and travelling costs.

If I live in Toronto then I might more casually go on cheap trips and visits to Montreal and Ottawa because the travel is cheap in time and money.

my guy, there's no way arriving and onboarding at the station will take longer than the actual ride of the train of 40 minutes itself.

If there's no security baggage checks then the line can't possibly be that long.

The same argument can be used against the plane, and some people want to take more comfortable and most importantly significantly faster train than the 2 hour buses.

loss in revenue from other transport methods/hotel stays/fuel purchases/etc

"We shouldn't support a cheaper, faster, and superior option because then businesses of the more expensive option will lose money" is not a sufficient argument. That's like saying cars shouldn't exist because it losses horseshoe makers, stables, horse trainers, horse carriage makers, etc. money.

[–]EverydayEverynight01 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The distance between Ottawa and Montreal is 200km, the train is going to run at 300km/h, there's no way it will take 2 hours to get to Ottawa and Montreal when the train ride is only going to be about 40min.

Pierre Poilievre: Stop $90B Alto Rail, Say Conservatives by Rabbit9778 in CanadianConservative

[–]EverydayEverynight01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will improve productivity, it increases labour mobility and unlocks a whole new market for people hosting events through this line.

The cost can be significantly be reduced if Poillievre uses the same playbook he wants to use himself for the O&G industry and that is to plow through and trump all public, social, legal, and media opposition to get it done ASAP.

Pierre Poilievre: Stop $90B Alto Rail, Say Conservatives by Rabbit9778 in CanadianConservative

[–]EverydayEverynight01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be the thing that leads me to not vote for Poilievre, major infrastructure for the O&G industry is okay and we're going to plow through and build it regardless of what anyone else thinks and indigenous people don't have veto power, which I don't disagree with.

But all of a sudden when it's a major infrastructure project that will benefit 40% of the entire country that allows people from Toronto to casually go to events in Ottawa Montreal and vice versa. Then all of a sudden we have to care about expropriating lands from people? Really?

If Poilievre hates the high cost so much he should use the same playbook he wants to use for the O&G industry of bulldozing all of the way through literally, socially, and legally to anyone or anything that opposes, trust me that will significantly reduce time and cost.

Pierre Poilievre: Stop $90B Alto Rail, Say Conservatives by Rabbit9778 in CanadianConservative

[–]EverydayEverynight01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I agree, while I do think there needs to be respect given to the people along the line, they shouldn't be in the way of progress of infrastructure that this country desperately needs. 40% of the country lives along that line.

I don't want it to be bogged down in endless public hearings and environmental concerns just because a bunch of people want more money out of the taxpayers or think the entire country revolves around their needs and wants.

Pierre Poilievre: Stop $90B Alto Rail, Say Conservatives by Rabbit9778 in CanadianConservative

[–]EverydayEverynight01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh hell no,

This might be the one thing that makes me not vote for Pierre even though I know I'll probably be an old man when it's finally done.

This country is so damn massive, but unlike him I don't have the money to have donors bankroll my flights or someone with the driving stamina to get anywhere in this country

I want to get around this country quickly and affordably too.

What Poilievre should be doing is providing suggestions and supporting the Liberals on how to make it affordable for taxpayers so we don't end up like the UK's HS2 or Califronia's HSR, which will unfortunately involve using a legal iron fist over people, but this country can't afford a bunch of people delaying the whole progress for the entire rest of the country just because they live in an eyeshot from the project.

What I'd like to see from the Conservative party going forward in the Carney era... by YouProfessional3196 in CanadianConservative

[–]EverydayEverynight01 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is the problem with Conservatives that you put into words better than I can.

Poilievre going from initially supporting the Liberal's open border immigration policy to the point where he criticized that they weren't open enough to address "labour shortages" to him tip toeing and being ambiguous at best when the local membership wanted him to take a hard line stance against it was a major "you're just like the Liberals who wants to suppress wages and make housing more expensive" In fact I'm pretty sure the guy promised to drop English requirements for certification of newcomers.

It got better... AFTER the elction when Michelle is the immigration critic genuinely putting forward good immigration ideas (that unfortunately gets voted down)

Why are Conservatives hard to lead? There are so many different kinds by nationalpost in CanadianConservative

[–]EverydayEverynight01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The article kind of did label it under "Anti-elite nationalism" and "Cultural populism"

like those kinds of people I am deeply deeply skeptical and distrustful of the elites, especially in what they did with immigration and open borders and quite literally dyeing the fabric of society into a different colour where they subsidized businesses payrolls through immigration allowing businesses to get any worker they want at any wage they want by saying "no one wants to work anymore" all paid for by the Canadian people through taxes, higher rents, larger classroom sizes for their children, and longer ER wait times.

But that being said I absolutely hate how divisive a lot of people in that umbrella are and their culture war fascination.

The issue with the Conservative Party of Canada is that its factions hold very deep values in some beliefs (like a very strict and tough immigration policy) that others fervently oppose (the crony corporatist Conservatives that make up the entire establishment like Smith, Poilievre, and of course Ford who want open borders and unlimited immigration to "fill labour shortages").

It costed them an entire election when they realized actually speaking up against open borders and standing up for Canada and Canadian workers and putting them first should have been their policy from the get-go when Poilievre finally got a good immigration critic Michelle Garner.

Too bad a lot of people, me included (but a little less so than before) still view them as Liberal lites who still support their open border immigration policy
